The Road to Divine Nearness: Pillars of Islam, Purification and Presence
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi.
A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Always a reminder for myself, ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence.
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat an-Nisa)
“…Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
Always a reminder for myself ana abdukal ‘ajeezu, dayeefu, miskinu, zhalim, wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence. Alhamdulillah that the last 10 days of Ramadan, Ramadan al Kareem ‘Itqun minan naar (freedom from fire) is an immense freedom from difficulty with the rahmah (mercy) of Allah (AJ) and the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ that draws us in and gives us even the ability for siyam and for fasting and to complete and make Allah (AJ) to be happy with us.
The Divine Gift of Sayyidina Muhammad’s ﷺ Light
This is a gift that Allah (AJ) has given to the blessed soul and the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ because of love. That He created this creation of Muhammadun Rasulallah ﷺ from His Divinely love and He gave it from its Divinely Grace. Because of its Divinely reward, He wants that light to be the most accomplished, most gifted, most praised, most beloved light. As soon as we draw that light near to ourselves and enter within the light, not only does the light of the servant vanish and the light of Muhammadun Rasulallah ﷺ overwhelm every other minor light but that light grants us the ability to accomplish what Allah (AJ) wants from us, to please Allah (AJ), to accomplish the ‘ibadah and the worshipness that makes our Lord to be happy with us.
Forgiveness and Freedom from Hellfire
From the second 10 days of maghfirah and forgiveness that no doubt anyone in the presence of that light asking for forgiveness, Allah (AJ) forgives that soul for the sake of the nearness to the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. ‘Itqun minan naar – what we described last night for ourselves as a reminder is that Allah (AJ), ‘How can I punish them?’ In Holy Qur’an ayatul kareem (the generous verse of Holy Qur’an), ‘How can I punish them when they’re asking forgiveness and they’re in your presence?’
8:33 – “Wa maa kaanal laahu liyu’az zibahum wa anta feehim; wa maa kaanal laahu mu’az zibahum wa hum yastaghfiroon” (Surat Al-Anfal)
“And Allah would not punish them and (while) you (Muhammad ﷺ ) are amongst them, and Allah (AJ) would not punish them (while) they seek forgiveness.” (The Spoils of War, 8:33)
So this is the great awakening and understanding from awliya (saints) from their seclusions and their trainings that they saw many things may be resolved with their zikrs (Divine remembrances), their du’as (supplications) but freedom from fire can only come by the intercession and the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. They saw it in their qabr (grave), they saw the ‘azaab (punishment) that everyone is due, everyone has a place reserved in jahannam (hellfire). It’s our duty to find this Divinely love to free ourself from that abode and from that seat of punishment, and it’s not by our deeds and it’s not by our prayers, it’s not by our zakat (charity).
PILLARS OF ISLAM
Role of Islamic Pillars in Spiritual Ascension – They’re the Means, Not Goal
All of the shahadah (testimony of faith), the salah (daily prayer), the zakah, the Hajj (pilgrimage) – all of the usool and the principles of Islam were not the freedom from hellfire. Those that we did when we took our shahadah then we give our zakah, then we make our salah, then we go for our Hajj those were all supposed to make the character to be beatific and submissive; it wasn’t the goal. It was a means that Allah (AJ) gave for us to reach the king and submit and to have that love to move in the presence. It means one who doesn’t testify how he’s going to reach to the presence of Muhammadun Rasulallah ﷺ? If the one they’re not giving zakah, not giving salah, not giving zakah. If he doesn’t make salah how he’s going to reach to the presence? So means each of those principles of Islam, pillars of Islam – those are the pillars of Islam, they weren’t the goal; they were the means in which to reach to the goal.
-
So it’s not the one who give shahadah that, ‘Oh I reached everything is fantastic now, I’m in paradise.’ But Allah (AJ) said, ‘By taking the shahadah you’re now one step closer to reaching My most beloved.’ - When you give your salah and you begin to submit yourself to the Will of Allah (AJ), you’re now a second step closer to reaching to the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
- As soon as you give yourselves zakah and you want to purify; zaki is a purification, ‘I want to purify my wealth, my possession and I want to purify my soul.’ Now that you’ve been washed, you’re now closer to go to the presence of Prophet ﷺ.
As soon as they begin to make the sawm e Ramadan – the fasting of Ramadan, it’s the only act that they can do that Allah (AJ) will grant them this level of purity and dress and the secrets of Isra wal Mi’raj (Night Journey and Ascension). What we described is these are all the haqqaiqs (realities) of a tasbih (prayer beads); each bead has its immense reality. But when you put them together it shows you the reality of your approach to Muhammadun Rasulallah ﷺ. He wants to give this immense station. How are you going to reach now this immense station? Allah (AJ) says, ‘The only way you can reach is don’t do anything. Abstain for My sake because I’m the only one who can dress you from these realities, I dress you with what no ear has heard, no angel has seen, no no no no no nothing.’ There are no two that are similar of the dress that Allah (AJ) wants to give.
Then prescribed for us the fasting of Ramadan because all of these some people feel that that’s the gift. They stop at that, ‘I’m somebody who fast, that’s it. I reach the highest level.’ No, the fasting was not something to be proud of but was a gift from Allah (AJ) that you’re reaching now to the threshold of the presence because what is the next? It is Hajj.
The Ultimate Goal of Worship and Submission
So everyone’s making the imitated Hajj where 20,000 dollars of tickets and hotels and whatever we have to do in life is the imitated Hajj. But all of these usool (fundamental principles of Islam), all of these pillars should have opened the real hijrah (migration) into the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That, they testified to the Oneness of Allah (AJ) and that the gate and door is Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
That they came into salah and they submitted themself and prayed in the way of alif, ha, meem, daal by imitating their master, their liege lord, the one whom is the Imam (leader) for all creations and brings all creation into the Presence of Allah (AJ). Because only thing in the presence of La ilaha illAllah is not you, not me, not an angel, not anything but Muhammadun Rasulallah ﷺ.
“La ilaha illallahu Muhammadun Rasulallah”
“There is no deity but Allah, Prophet Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”
So all of these Allah (AJ) gave as a gift that, ‘Do these, don’t be proud of them. Do them, come with humility, I’m going to open for you the greatest hijrah, the greatest gift,’ in which all nations will make that hijrah on Yawmul qiyamah (The day of resurrection), Yawmul Mahshar – the day of judgment in which the fire and the heats and all nations running to their prophets (as) asking that, ‘You save us.’ Each Prophet (as) from Shafa’at al Kubra – the grand intercession and the Hadith on the grand intercession, each Prophet (as) saying, ‘I have a deficiency. I’m not that one.’
The Grand Intercession of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
If you study the levels of the hearts [Book: then we understand that the nation of Adam (as), they go to Adam (as) and they say that, ‘You help us.’ [Replies] ‘I’m not that one.’ They go to Sayyidina Nuh (as). Sayyidina Ibrahim (as), Sayyidina Musa (as), Sayyidina Isa (as) and then collective nations all come to the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and they ask for the holy intercession of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.

Narrated Anas (ra): The Prophet (pbuh) said, “On the Day of Resurrection the Believers will assemble and say, ‘Let us ask somebody to intercede for us with our Lord.’ So they will go to Sayyidina Adam (as) and say, ‘You are the father of all the people, and Allah (AJ) created you with His Own Hands, and ordered the angels to prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with your Lord, so that He May Relieve us from this place of ours. Sayyidina Adam (as) will say: ‘I am not fit for this (i.e. intercession for you).’ Then Adam (as) will remember his sin and feel ashamed thereof.
He will say, ‘Go to Sayyidina Noah (as), for he was the first Apostle Allah (AJ) sent to the inhabitants of the earth.’ They will go to him and Sayyidina Noah (as) will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.’ He will remember his appeal to his Lord to do what he had no knowledge of, then he will feel ashamed thereof. He will say: ‘Go to the Khalilur Rahman (Sayyidina Abraham (as)).’ They will go to him, and he will say: ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.’
‘Go to Sayyidina Moses (as), the servant to whom Allah (AJ) spoke (directly) and gave him the Torah.’ So they will go to him, and he will say: ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.’ And he will mention (his) killing a person who was not a killer, and so he will feel ashamed thereof before his Lord.
He will say, ‘Go to Sayyidina Isa (Jesus) (as), Allah’s (AJ) Servant, His Apostle and Allah’s Word and a Spirit coming from Him. Sayyidina Isa (Jesus) (as) will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.’
‘Go to Sayyidina Muhammad (pbuh) the Servant of Allah (AJ) whose past and future sins were forgiven by Allah (AJ). ‘So they will come to me and I will proceed till I will ask my Lord’s Permission and I will be given permission.’
‘When I see my Lord, I will fall down in prostration, and He will let me remain in that state as long as He wishes. Then I will be addressed: “(Muhammad!) Raise your head. Ask, and your request will be granted; speak, and you will be heard; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.”‘ ‘I will then raise my head and praise Allah (AJ) with a saying (i.e., invocation) He will teach me. Then I will intercede, and He will fix a limit for me (to intercede for), and I will admit them into Paradise. Then I will come back again to Allah (AJ), and when I see my Lord, the same thing will happen to me. I will intercede, and Allah (AJ) will fix a limit for me to intercede for those I will admit into Paradise. Then I will come back for the third time. Then I will come back for the fourth time and will say, “None remains in Hell…” [Sahih al-Bukhari 4476, Book 65, Hadith 3]
So means everyone’s going to do it but the ummah (nation) that accepted that, the nation that accepted, do you understand that reality? Do it while you’re living for the reward is much higher than being forced from the grave and Judgment Day and all the ‘azaab of Judgment Day to reach to that.
PURIFICATION
Purification Through Charity and Self-Sacrifice
Allah’s (AJ) blessings and grace is when He inspires a person and a human, a creation that come to that reality, give your testimony of faith, begin to submit your will to the will of your Creator in the form and the reality of Muhammadun Rasulallah ﷺ. Give your zakah, give your alms to purify yourself, your bad character, your bad desires and then to wash your soul with that almsgiving. That when we give zakah it washes the soul, takes away the sins and the impurities of the body. That every human has like a festering sickness upon themselves. As soon as they give zakah and sadaqah (charity) and whatever Prophet ﷺ has prescribed for us, it’s as if you cut the sickness and all of the disease leaves the person’s physicality and their soul.
As a result, they enter into their hijrah. That each gate was so significant. How could you enter the gate until you accepted the Oneness? If you accepted the Oneness then you understand that you have the demon and your life should be about praying. That, ‘I want to submit myself to the Lord Almighty. I want to be in the Muhammadan form and the Muhammadan way in which to submit myself to Allah (AJ) and rid myself of myself.’ Then Allah (AJ) opens the next key, now give your zakat, begin to purify yourself, your body, your soul and everything about you.
That’s why in Surah munafiqeen (hypocrites) Allah (AJ) describes the saliheen (righteous). He gives an event that when a person dies and it’s like a second, they don’t understand that they died but they realize they’re in Divinely Presence and Allah (AJ) describes in Surah munafiqeen that the only thing the servant will ask for is not ‘Let me go back and make my prayers, let me go back and complete more Hajjs, let me go back and do this and do that.’ But ‘Ya Rabbi let me go back and give all my wealth so that I can be from amongst the saliheen.’
63:10 – “Wa anifqoo mim maa razaqnaakum min qabli any-ya’tiya ahadakumul mawtu fa yaqoola rabbi law laaa akhkhartaneee ilaaa ajalin qareebin fa assaddaqa wa akum minassaaliheen” (Surat Al-Munafiqoon)
“And spend something (in charity) out of the substance which We have bestowed on you, before Death should come to any of you and he should say, “O my Lord! why didst Thou not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and I should have been one of the doers of good” (The Hypocrites, 63:10)
Because that level of purification is the reality of self-sacrifice that grants the door to the next key. Which… what was the zakah of Imam Hussain (as)? He put his family. He said, ‘Where Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) didn’t want to sacrifice his son, we bring all our sons into this battlefield and they will all lay their lives down for You.’
The Spiritual Journey Towards the Lord of Power
So means beyond the concept of giving money, giving this, giving that. Allah (AJ) said this zakah and zaki and purification, that you must give from yourself. You must give what’s dear to you and you must give it in the way of Allah (AJ) – that is the key to the opening of this hijrah, the key to the presence of that reality of your pilgrimage and that’s the journey to the Lord of Power. Where Allah (AJ) describes the presence of Prophet ﷺ taught by One Whom is “Shadeedul Quwa.”
53:3-5 – “Wa ma yantiqu ‘anil hawa. (3) In huwa illa wahyun yooha. (4) ‘Allamahu shadeedul Quwa. (5)” (Surat An-Najm)
“Nor does he (Prophet Muhammad (s) speak from [his own] desire. (3) He is not but a revelation revealed. (4) He was taught by one Mighty in Power. (5)” (The Star, 53:3-5)
That’s why we say the ‘Lord of Power.’ That when you think you’re entering into the presence of Prophet ﷺ, at those levels of ma’rifah (Gnosticism), this is the power oceans of Allah (AJ) in which the servant to be purified and clean. They accepted the Oneness, they took a life of salah and praying, rid myself of myself and fill me with these lights and then entered a life of sacrificing. They sacrifice money, they sacrifice time, they sacrifice their food. Mashallah so many people emailing that they don’t really have much and they went out and bought food and they’re feeding people. This is the beatific keys for this hijrah that is coming because every year is one cycle where we’re trying to get closer.
THE PRESENCE
Reaching to the Presence of Sultanan Naseera (Victorious King) Through the Gates of Truth
What is coming now after the 9th month? The 12th month which is the month of hijrah. The reality of our principles, the pillars of Islam is not anything to be proud of and that we accomplished. But each of them were keys for the greater presence. The only time one can be proud is if they reach the presence, that their hijrah became real and their pride is in the magnificence and munificence of Allah’s (AJ) gift. That they feel a pride in their heart that, ‘Ya Rabbi what You have honored me with of what I was completely not worthy of.’ What Allah (AJ) describes that presence – Sultanan Naseera. They entered in their life through Maka’as Siddiq.
17:80 – “Wa qul Rabbi adkhelni mudkhala Sidqin wa akhrejni mukhraja Sidqin waj’al li min ladunka Sultanan NaSeera.” (Surat Al-Isra)
“Say: O my Lord! Let my entry be by the Gate of Truth and Honour, and likewise my exit by the Gate of Truth and Honour; and grant me from Your Presence a Victorious King to aid (me).” (The Night Journey, 17:80)
They went through the gates of truth and they went with the noble Companions and truthful Companions and noble Ahlul Bayt (Holy Family of Prophet ﷺ) that led them, taught them, perfected their character. That every gate and every step they took was from the siddiqs – truthful, honest in their deeds and in their actions. No corruption, no dirtiness, no vileness, no no the fooling and cheating of people. Maka’as Siddiq – that the great Siddiq Sayyidina Abu Bakr as Siddiq (as) is the father of this way Naqshbandiya tul ‘Aliya (The Most Distinguished Naqshbandi Order). They come that every, every step you go has to be the truthful gate until you give your zakah, give your zaki, purify yourself and give yourself for your Lord.
Then what Allah (AJ) open for that servant? To the presence of Sultanan Naseera. Now you’re in the presence of the authorized king of Allah (AJ) and that Prophet ﷺ must sign. If Prophet ﷺ has not signed your presence then your hijrah is still in a imitation. That’s nice, people are happy. They go and spend lots of money, this is a nice imitation but at every moment we should be imitating that reality. At every moment visualizing ourselves moving into that direction and saying, ‘Ya Rabbi that imitated Hajj is nice for people but grant me the real hijrah. I want to be from the real hujjaj (pilgrims). The one whom are ‘Labbaik, Allahumma labbaik’ (Here I am, at Your service). That I’m at the presence and the feet of Sayyidina ﷺ and that You are in his Divinely heart and that I reach to that reality and I give my life to serve that reality.’
The Spiritual Reality of Laylatul Qadr (Night of Power)
We pray that Allah (AJ) open for us that this Laylatul Qadr is an understanding. That Laylatul Qadr is a time in which the Qur’an will reveal its energies and many people are searching for Laylatul Qadr. I even saw people posting what the weather will be like. ‘Layla Qadr may be cloudy, Laylatul Qadr may be raining, Layla Qadr may be like this,’ this is an entertainment. Laylatul Qadr is in the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Anything to do with Holy Qur’an is in the house of the Holy Qur’an which is the heart of Prophet’s ﷺ eternal soul. From that eternal soul “Anzalna Hu” is coming to Janab al Hu.
97:1 – “Inna anzalnaahu fee laylatil-qadr.” (Surat Al-Qadr)
“We have brought it down on the night of power.” (The Power, 97:1)
From that authority that power Allah (AJ) is giving the isharah (sign) ‘Open the power.’ It opens from the fountainhead of the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. As a reality then why go downstream to catch that? Because when you go downstream you’re looking for signs, ‘Maybe the water will flash over us, maybe it’d be misty in the sky, maybe it’d be like this.’ No, use your buraq (noble mystical horse).
Use Your Buraq to Reach the Divine Presence
What we described this year the buraq was? This [shaykh points to his tasbih], so nice. Sit on these Laylatul Qadrs which is the even nights because you’re waiting for the odd night. Right? We celebrate 26th because the maghrib (evening prayer) will hit the 27th and become the night of 27th. Then ‘ashiqeen (lovers) they sit with the love of Prophet ﷺ and say, ‘I don’t know what event is going to come, not to come, what to expect. I actually expect nothing. All I want to be is in the presence of your Holy Soul. This is my qadr and this is “shadeedul quwa” for me and I make my salawats (praises upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and visualize myself at Rauza e Sharif (holy burial chamber) in the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, ‘Whatever Allah (AJ) is dressing upon your soul, whatever your realities are, dress me from those for the sake of my love for you, dress my family and my community and all your ‘ashiqeen from this endless love and eternal love.’
Laylatul Qadr: A Gift Beyond Physical Signs
So alhamdulillah not in need to search when Laylatul Qadr is. Laylatul Qadr is always a power in the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. But these 10 days Allah (AJ) is giving special gifts, special gift and to ‘ashiqeen then alhamdulillah they should never miss these gifts. Because it’s their love that they sent into that presence, not their brain like waiting for a bus, ‘What time this bus comes? What street this bus is coming on?’ ‘Ashiqeen – they come with their heart.
