(Surat an-Nisa)
“O You who have believed, Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you.” (The Women, 4:59)
Allah (AJ) Wants to Dress Us With Immense Realities in Ramadan
Ana abdukal ajeezu daifu miskeen wa zalim wa jahl and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we are still in existence and our whole life is to learn the way of taslim and submission. In life, we often plan and Allah (AJ) plans better.
8:30 – “… wa yamkuroona wa yamkurul laahu, Wallaahu khairul maakireen” (Surat Al-Anfal)
“…But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.” (The Spoils of War, 8:30)
So, this life of taslim and submission is not easy. It’s one thing to talk about it and another thing to live and try to live that reality. Allah (AJ) open for us the immense blessings of shahrul Ramadan, the holy month of Ramadan in which Allah (AJ) want to dress the servant with all the immense realities that Allah (AJ) has bestowed into the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That Prophet ﷺ has bestowed and taught to his holy companions, his holy family and awliyaullah fis samahi wa fil ard (saints in heavens and on earth).
Hold Tight to Your Spiritual Path (Holy Qur’an, 72:16)
They give us those teachings to inspire us the immensity of what Allah (AJ) wants to give in Ramadan; not only what zahiri (external understanding) people teach us, but the immensity from the oceans of malakut (heavenly realm) and the realities, the lights, all the stations that Allah (AJ) wanted for insan (mankind) to achieve that guided many to the turuqs (spiritual paths). Istiqamoo fi tariqat, that hold firm to your tariqat.
72:16 – “Wa alla wis taqaamoo ‘alat tareeqati la asqaynaahum maa’an ghadaqaa” (Surat Al-Jinn)
“And [Allah revealed] that: “If they had only remained firm on their tariqa (straight path), We would have bestowed on them Rain/water in abundance. ” (The Jinn, 72:16)
A Believer Cannot Be a Liar
Then they described why. Because it was the path in which to complete your covenant to Allah (AJ). That from the holy hadith of Prophet ﷺ that, ‘A believer can be many things but he’s not a liar.’
Wahaddasani Malikun (ra), ‘an Safwan ibni Sulaymin, ‘annahu qala, qila li Rasulallahi ﷺ: “Ayakunu al Mu’minu jabanan?” Faqala, “Na’am.” Faqila lahu, “Ayakunu al Mu’minu bakhilan?” Faqala, “Na’am.” Faqila lahu, “Ayakunu al Mu’minu kazzaban?” Faqala, “La.” [Kitab 56, Hadith 19]
Anas ibn Malik (ra) related to me that Safwan ibn Sulaym said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, ‘Can the mumin be a coward?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He was asked, ‘Can the mumin be a miser?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He was asked, ‘Can the mumin be a liar?’ He said, ‘No.’ ” [Book 56, Hadith 19]
They explain that no, this is the lies of heavens, lies of dunya (material world). Oh, we see so many believers lying all day long. So, what Prophet ﷺ meant from that holy hadith is that they can’t lie to Allah (AJ) on what they promised. Your mouth can, but that’s why Allah (AJ) says, ‘I’m going to seal your mouth. Your hands will talk.’
36:65 – “Al yawma nakhtimu ‘ala afwahehim wa tukallimunaa aydeehim wa tashhadu arjuluhum bima kanoo yaksiboon.” (Surah YaSeen)
“That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn.” (YaSeen, 36:65)
So, the lie from the heavens is what was important that, ‘I have angels and all creation bearing witness to what you promised and what you said you would accomplish on Earth. What you said you were going to do with this soul and this chance of life that I give to you. If I give to you this chance, what you would do with it?’
Does Your Heart Feel a Warning About Your Promise to Allah (AJ)?
That’s why the believers, every time they meditate and a faiz (downpouring blessing) comes to them, a ruhaniyat (spirituality) comes to them especially if inayatullah (Allah’s (AJ) care) comes in which Allah (AJ), at that moment, feels a pleasure and a satisfaction with the servant. Like a breeze, it hits the servant. They feel a closeness and a proximity and they begin to cry. The crying was because of the promise and the covenant they made to Allah (AJ). If you’re not crying and you’re not feeling a sense of that nearness, then you have to try to connect even stronger. That to feel a sense that you don’t feel a warning within the heart that you promised Allah (AJ).
We Are Accountable for Our Time in This World
It means that’s when the heart becomes so clean, so purified, so filled with lights. Every time it begins to make the connection with them, the immensity of tears and a fear within their soul and that real and inner reality is that it knows what it promised Allah (AJ) of the time it was given, on what it would achieve. That’s why Prophet ﷺ described, ‘You’re accountable for your time.’
‘Ani ibni ‘Abbasin (ra) qala, qala Rasulullahi ﷺ: “Ightanim khamsan qabla khamsin, shababaka qabla haramika wa sihataka qabla saqamika wa ghinaka qabla faqrika wa faraghaka qabla shughulika wa ḥayataka qabla mawtika.” [Shu’bu al Imani lil Bayhaqi al Zuhdu wa Qasru al Amal 10250]
Narrated Ibn Abbas (ra), the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your riches before your poverty, your free time before your work, and your life before your death.” [Shu’ab al Iman lil Bayhaqi 10250]
If Allah gives you time in life, it wasn’t, you know, just a time that appeared out of nowhere. But that was a time in which to reflect and to contemplate. That’s why the purpose of muraqabah (meditation) and to know oneself is what did I promise Allah (AJ)? I don’t know my lifespan. I don’t know if it’s going to be a 100 years on this Earth or 40 years on this Earth or 30 years on this Earth.
Awliyaullah Make Us Aware of Our Covenant to Allah (AJ)
The purpose of awliyaullah (saints) is to reach to us our covenant. One is to open the awareness – ‘Are you aware that you made a promise to Allah (AJ)?’ So, if you hear our voice, you can’t lie anymore to yourself, ‘No, I don’t know, I don’t. I’m not aware of that.’ Say, ‘No I heard the shaykh said I made a promise. My life now is to find out what that promise is. That’s the duty and responsibility of guides is to, through their teaching, through their suhbats (religious lectures), through their practices, through your interaction is bring you to that covenant.
What you promised Allah (AJ) and how to achieve that promise so that’s the immensity of this reality. Their medicine are these types of teachings: last days, events of difficulty, bring awareness to what is already all around us so that the hub (limit) of dunya (material world), the love of dunya, the love that makes the person enter into their heart and become heedless of their promise.
Pious Ones Don’t Allow Dunya Distractions to Enter Their Hearts
So, when they’re talking of dunya (material world) is that they’re faqir billahi tala, that they are poor in comparison to Allah (AJ). But the poverty is not a physical poverty. The poverty is a poverty within their hearts that the love of dunya is not going to enter to their heart to be a distraction from their covenant and what they promised to Allah (AJ). That’s the importance for awliyaullah (saints) and to live amongst awliyaullah is that they inspire within us what that covenant was. What is it that we promised from Allah (AJ) and how to draw near to it?
So, that when you begin to meditate and you feel the sense of crying and you think it’s for all the reasons that maybe coming to your mind but the real reason of the crying is that you promised Allah (AJ) and the fear. It’s not a fear of punishment. It’s a fear of shame that, ‘Am I going to feel embarrassed in front of Your Majestic Might with all my love for you that I came short? I didn’t do all that I could have done or should have done.’ That becomes the immense reality.
Any Amount of Fasting You Do in Ramadan Bestows Immense Barakah
Ramadan is an immense gift from Allah (AJ) that, ‘I know how much the shaitans (devils) bother you throughout the year, how much they put difficulty upon you, how much you are struggling to reach My rida and satisfaction. I grant you that reality. Enter into a state of fasting.’ Nobody can say that they can’t fast. Anything and every intention, Allah (AJ) will give its reward.
So, we would train the children who were younger that you can go half a day, break and then regain your fast for the rest of the day. If you’re elderly, you try to fast whatever you can based on stopping, taking your medicine, abstaining, trying to eat just one time a day. Anything that you can do that can reach to that reality based on your limitations, your sickness, whatever the difficulty of the servant is, they try to take the barakah (blessing) of the immensity of that month. That’s the reality that Allah (AJ) say, ‘Just enter into this state and I begin to dress you with these lights, bless you with these lights.’ You can only achieve them by the siyam (fasting).
Step Up Your Fasting By Controlling Your Faculties
Then each year, the siyam (fasting) become more important, ‘Ya Rabbi, I did the siyam, last year of the fasting of regular people. This year, ya Rabbi, I want to fast with my ears. I want to fast with my eyes. I want to fast with my breath. I want to fast with all my faculties so that they all can reach a sense of purity and cleanliness.’
The fasting of my breath, fasting of what I say, fasting of being conscious of what I say and that I don’t have to say more than what’s necessary. I keep to myself, keep to my zikr (Divine remembrance), make my sense of isolation and do the practices that are necessary.
Preparing for Ramadan Begins Eight Months Before
So, when people are talking about how to prepare for Ramadan, they should have been preparing for the eight months. That’s why if you follow the guides, they were preparing you for Ramadan. They were preparing on each talk and each example. Sit and meditate and contemplate and thousand questions and thousand answers, for what? So, that you use that tool on this month.
As soon as the month begins, you’re showering, welcoming the holy month of Ramadan. That, ‘Ya Rabbi, like the dead, be washed before they enter the grave to meet Your presence. I’m stepping into the shower like a ghusl (shower). That wash me and wash all my sins, wash all my badness and prepare me for this holy month. Dress me from the lights of this holy month. Dress me with the secret and the lights of Holy Qur’an of which I can read, not read.’
Allah (AJ) Made All the Practices to Be at Our Fingertips
Look at the Qur’an. Let the lights of the Qur’an to dress the soul and then the meditation, the practices, breathing, connecting. All of that was the preparation for Ramadan. Sit with the app. You don’t have to look here, you don’t have to look there. How Allah (AJ) made everything to be on the lap of the believer! Before you have books here, books there, something on a cassette here, something on a something there. They put it all together, say, ‘Start reciting this salawat (praising upon Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ).
Start reciting all these du’as (supplications). Start to recite all these awrads (daily practices). Sit in your time of reflection and meditation. Connect your hearts and ask that from Allah’s (AJ) Divinely presence to the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, to the presence of awliyaullah (saints). That I’m asking from these awliyaullah to reflect into my heart and dress my heart, bless my heart.
Majority of People Prepare for Ramadan Just Before It Begins
So, these eight, eight months of training was for preparation. That’s why you see the schools of the elite are so much different than everything else. But I don’t think the people who are in those schools even realize that they’re in the school of elite training because you see all over the internet, ‘How to prepare for Ramadan’ and 200,000 people are clicking because they’re all day long doing nothing. Their practices are nothing and it came to them one time in their life that this month is coming, ‘Let me see what I’m supposed to be doing.’
But by the grace of Allah’s (AJ) Might and Majesty, the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, we’ve all been enrolled in a school that eight months is training us for Ramadan. Sit, meditate, contemplate. Don’t bother people. Be good, have gracious character. Don’t fight, don’t argue. All of those were the preparations for the month of rewards, the month of mercy.
The First Ten Days of Ramadan are Through Baab ur Rahmah, the Gate of Mercy
Baab ar-Rahmah (Gate of Mercy), the first ten days is a gate of mercy. Who in these eight months has been training what the mercy is? The mercy is Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. So, you don’t have to try to figure that out for somebody. Said, ‘Okay, how to prepare for Ramadan?’ For eight months, you were trained on being at the Gate of Mercy. Every muraqabah, they said, ‘Sit. Close. See your eyes at Baab ar-Rahmah, Rauza Sharif (Holy Burial Chambers) at the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is Rahmatan lil’alameen ﷺ.
21:107 – “Wa maa arsalnaka illa Rahmatan lil’alameen.” (Surat Al Anbiya)
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (The Prophets, 21:107)
If Prophet ﷺ finds pity on you and looks at you that, ‘Eight months, you’ve been sitting at my Rauza (holy burial chamber) and I’m looking at you. I feel a pity for you. I feel a love for you.’ That was the rahmah (mercy) of Allah (AJ). That was your training. Of course, then in a state of fasting, the ten days is what? The baab (gate) of mercy is that Prophet ﷺ is dressing his ahbaab and lovers with an immense love from Allah (AJ).
The Next Ten Days of Ramadan are Through Baab ul Maghfirah, the Gate of Forgiveness
So, immense dressings of rahmah and mercy. Then the next ten days, they say the Baab al-Maghfirah (Gate of forgiveness). Because if Prophet ﷺ took your love, dressed you from mercy, then what? No doubt, “Qul in kuntum tuhibbon Allaha fattabi’oni, yuhbibkumUllah”. That Allah (AJ) begin to grant you maghfirah (forgiveness) and dressing of all of your sins; forgive you, forgive you, forgive you.
3:31 – “Qul in kuntum tuhibbon Allaha fattabi’oni, yuhbibkumUllahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunobakum wallahu Ghaforur Raheem.” (Surat Al ‘Imran)
“Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (The Family of Imran, 3:31)
The Last Ten Days of Ramadan is ‘Itqun Minan Naar, Salvation From the Fire
Then “’Itqun minan naar” is to be forgiven in the last 30 days from fire.
‘An Salman al Farsi (ra), an Rasulullahi ﷺ qala: “Shahru Ramadana awwalahu rahmatun, wa awsatuhu maghfiratun, wa akhiruhu ‘itqun minan naar.” [Al Imam al Albani, Meshkat al Masabih, Kitab 7, Hadith 9]
Narrated by Salman al Farsi (ra), that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “The first (ten days) of the month of Ramadan is mercy, the middle (ten days) is forgiveness, and the last (ten days) is salvation/freedom from the fire.” [Al Imam al Albani, Meshkat al Masabih, Book 7, Hadith 9]
Ask Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ For Forgiveness to Receive Forgiveness From Allah (AJ) (Holy Qur’an, 4:64)
Of course, how you can be in fire if the rahmah (mercy) of Prophet ﷺ dressing, maghfirah (forgiveness) of Prophet ﷺ is dressing? “Jaooka,” that when you’re oppressor to yourself that you go to the presence of the rahmah, go to the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. He begins to ask for your forgiveness and you begin to ask the forgiveness from Allah (AJ) and the forgiveness from Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
That is the reality of maghfirah (forgiveness). Imagine somebody who didn’t study that. They have only a portion of the equation. When Allah (AJ) giving the secret of maghfirah and forgiveness – “Jaooka fastaghfaro Allaha wastaghfara lakum Rasool.”
4:64 – … wa law annahum idh dhalamoo anfusahum jaooka fastaghfaro Allaha wastaghfara lahumur Rasolu lawajado Allaha tawwaban raheema. ” (Surat An Nisa)
“…And if, when they had wronged [were oppressor to] themselves, they had but come to you (saws) and asked forgiveness of Allah, and asked forgiveness of the messenger, they would have found Allah Forgiving, Merciful.” (The Women 4:64)
Our Actions and Mannerisms May Not Be Correct, But Our Love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ Must Be
So, Allah’s giving the secret, ‘My forgiveness, you have to be in the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.’ Imagine 99% of the nation doesn’t know that. So, they’re asking, they’re asking Allah’s (AJ) rahmah (mercy), alhamdulillah. But its not like that. It’s not from the training of the khawas and the elite in which Allah (AJ) gave them the understanding, ‘You are not normal. You’re not taking regular washing. You are going to the threshold of the reality of maghfirah (forgiveness). That they run to the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ with their naat (Prophetic praising), with their love, with their salawats (praisings upon Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ), with all their actions.
Say that, ‘Nobody can ask this forgiveness except you. Nobody can to enter the presence of Allah (AJ) with the reality in which you have, ya Sayyidi, ya Rasul e-kareem (O Generous Prophet). With this love I have for you, that I’m a beggar at your threshold. I only know how to sing praises and say beatific things for you; not my actions are correct, not my mannerisms are correct, not my deeds are correct. But my love for you is my way towards Allah’s (AJ) rida and satisfaction.
Allah (AJ) Dresses and Blesses Those at the Door of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
So, then no doubt Allah (AJ) dressing, blessing the servant. Why? Because imagine then the love that Allah (AJ) has for Prophet ﷺ that, ‘If you like this one, this beggar coming to your door with all this bad characteristic. I have to clean him just to make him worthy to be in your holy presence.’ This is the love that Allah (AJ) has for Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. If we understood the reality of ishq and love and muhabbat, then we would understand that if I’m beggar, I’m dirty, I’m nothing. But I have love for you, Sayyidi ya Rasul e-kareem.
If Prophet ﷺ present you, Allah (AJ) say, ‘I will clean him just so that he’s not dirty in your presence.’ Imagine you have a love and you have something as a gift you want to bring and its dirty. You don’t let it to go dirty into the presence of that king. Allah (AJ) make it to be pure and purified just so that it can be in the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
We All Have a Place Reserved in Hellfire From Which Our Nafs was Born to Partner with Shaitan
So, this is the immensity of rahmah and mercy and maghfirah (forgiveness) and ‘itqun minan naar (freedom from fire) is an immensity of the servant to be presented their position in jahannam (hellfire), to clean the position in jahannam, to take away all the badness from that position in jahannam and to make it a position in paradise, in the lights of paradise because everybody has a space reserved in jahannam. That space, its fire can only be extinguished by the intercession of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Otherwise, that servant’s position, that place Allah (AJ) has reserved for him like a table at a restaurant, it’s sitting waiting for them. That place in jahannam is where your nafs (ego) is born from and that it accompanies you to take you back to that place. It’s born to be a partner with shaitan (satan).
Allah (AJ) Will Never Punish You When You’re With Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Holy Qu’ran, 8:33)
So, it means then all this training was to put that fire out. So, the last ten days of Ramadan with all this love, all this mercy, then all the meditations and all the practices is, ‘Ya Rabbi, let me see my place in this place of difficulty that was reserved for me. All my salawats (praisings upon Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ), that let the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ come and extinguish this fire. Make it no more a place of jahannam (hellfire), but a place of paradise.’ That’s from holy verse of Qur’an, ‘When Prophet ﷺ is amongst you, never will Allah (AJ) punish you while he’s amongst you.’
8:33 – “Wa maa kaanal laahu liyu’az zibahum wa anta feehim; wa maa kaanal laahu mu’az zibahum wa hum yastaghfiroon” (Surat Al-Anfal)
“And Allah would not punish them and (while) you (Muhammad ﷺ) are amongst them, and Allah (AJ) would not punish them (while) they seek forgiveness.” (The Spoils of War, 8:33)
They know that so keep the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. In everything they do is a protection of every type of difficulty. So they saw themselves in their graves, in their place of difficulty. Ayatul kareem (generous verse of holy Qur’an) comes to dress to them that, ‘Never will I punish you if he is amongst you, while he is amongst you and while you are asking in forgiveness.’ So, that ayatul kareem is the secret and the realities of the last ten days of Ramadan.
Extinguish the Fire of Your Ego in Ramadan, Train It to Support You Towards Goodness
That, ‘Ya Rabbi, Your promise from Holy Qur’an to be true. That I’m asking the presence of Prophet ﷺ from first ten days, second ten days, these last ten days with me. That with this holy presence with me, these salawats (praisings upon Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ), these maghfirah (forgiveness). All of this to extinguish these fires for the sake of the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and make it to be a place of paradise and beatific lights and beatific energies. That fire that dresses and extinguishes, that light that extinguishes that fire in your place in jahannam (hellfire), it brings a sakina (tranquility) and good energy to the bad nafs (ego). As much as your place in jahannam is raging with fire, your nafs is very strong.
So, Ramadan, why Ramadan is the force that extinguishes everything? It’s because if Allah (AJ) begin to grant the lights of ‘itqun minan naar (freedom from fire), that rain that comes upon that fire is a rain that begins to diminish the power of the bad nafs and the wicked nafs, the evil nafs until the nafs that accompanies you becomes a nafs like a support that encourages you towards goodness and good and kind actions; actions in which Allah (AJ) to be pleased with, inshaAllah.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
