Your Ego, Shaitan or Your Soul: Who Sits On Your Throne?
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Always a reminder for myself, ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence.
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat an-Nisa)
“…Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
Our Heart is Our Chair of Authority
Alhamdulillah, in this holy month and these holy lights that Allah (AJ) grant us these immense realities by giving us this great gift of tariqah (spiritual path) that is a way towards these oceans of reality. Somebody had asked, in an email, for an understanding of who’s in charge of insan (mankind) and who’s making the choices that people are making. One way of analogies to understand the realities is that there’s one chair but there’s three people trying to sit on it.
This chair is the chair of authority. The heart and the heart that controls the mind and all its realities, we can imagine it to be a chair. Shaitan (satan) wants that chair and if he sits on it, he’ll control the faculties of insan. He’ll control the person, their thoughts, their wants, their desires. The nafs (ego) wants to sit on that chair and govern that individual.
We Adopt a Fiery Nature When We Allow Shaitan on Our Chair
The most authorized one to sit on the chair is the soul. The soul wants to sit on the chair to implement Allah’s (AJ) kingdom. So, that he comes from Divinely inspiration to sit upon the chair of authority and govern insan (mankind) by means in the way of what the heavens has asked of them. Our life is understanding that struggle.
It means the people of Nafs Al-Ammara (Evil Self), the one whom completely gave themself to shaitan – then they must know that shaitan is sitting upon, satan is sitting upon their chair. As he sits upon it, he implements his satanic desire and everything that’s against the heavens. Everything that’s wrong, everything that’s bad will begin to dress that insan, that personality from his satanic understandings and from his satanic desires. The nafs (ego), which comes from a reality of jahannam (hellfire) and is a fiery nature, it wants to sit upon the chair and implement wickedness and evilness. It lends itself to the satanic desire.
Humanity Has Given Itself to Shayateen
So, we described many times before there’s no sharik (partner) with Allah (AJ) because there’s no possibility of that happening. So, anybody rightly minded understands there’s no partnership with Allah (AJ). There’s no way to achieve a partnership or to think of having a partnership. The la sharik (no partnership), in its reality, is the one whom allows their nafs (ego) to become partnered with shaitan and they fight for the chair of authority. So, it means the satanic desire, the nafs and the soul are completely away from the chair.
It’s so strong and it has no belief in the heavens and is Ammara; every lower bad desire. If it left to become stronger and stronger upon that chair, it become horrific in this world where you see all of these horrific actions, where you say a human couldn’t do that. No, a human can’t because humanity has left. There’s no human sitting on that chair. They have literally given themself to these jinn (unseen beings) and shayateen (devils) that completely sit upon their chair of authority, govern them and even give them what they want to eat, what they want to do.
Our Nafs and Shaitan Team Up Together
So, we see ourself like a chair and it controls the ears, the eyes, the hands – everything about insan (mankind). The one whom struggling is then a nafs and his ego sits upon the chair but the danger is that the ego, if not under discipline, it keeps becoming a partner with shaitan in which the shaitan is clever and approaches the nafs and says, ‘Why don’t we be partners where you can sit on the chair and I will sit on the chair? We will share this chair of authority.’
In their sharik and in their partnership, they be governed. They begin to govern that person by their satanic desire and nafsani (egocentric) desire in which the moment that shaitan sits, the very bad inclination. When the shaitan gets up, the nafs sits and makes its own nafsani (egocentric) and everything.
Tariqah Warns of the Danger of ‘Ananiya
What’s the word for ‘ananiya (I-ness)? Everything about ‘I. I am. I did. I this. I that,’ and you can hear these people when they talk, everything is ‘I’. They address everything, ‘You know I did this. I went here. I did this. I met this. I did this. I did that. I did this.’ They have ‘ananiya, a pharaonic nafs that directs everything to itself and that I-ness.
That’s why the tariqah (spiritual path) comes and talks and says that ‘they’ and ‘we’. Talk in multiple, not in singular. Never is an ‘I’ because the danger of I-ness is the danger of Fir’aun (Pharaoh) because it becomes a one ‘I’, not multiple ‘I’. The I-ness, it is directing itself to its egoistic and ego, egoistic desire. So, in reality, the two of them are fighting, becoming partners on how often they can sit on the chair.
Allah (AJ) Wants Us to Give Power to Our Soul
Hence, when people are not giving power to their soul, not doing spiritual practices, who’s making the choices? Nafs (ego) and shaitan (satan) because they are clearly partners on the chair and every lower desire, bad desire, bad action, they make it. They even have audacity to blame God, ‘Oh, nothing open for me so I don’t have to do good. I don’t have to do this’ because satanic and crazy thought process.
But we have to understand the one making the choice is the nafs and shaitan on this one chair. Allah (AJ), when He wants to guide the servant, He begins to guide them to put a power upon their soul. They have an inner calling towards realities. If Allah (AJ) doesn’t begin to push that light and energy onto the soul, they can never come to guidance. Never. It’s not anyone’s cleverness. That’s why Allah (AJ) for salah (daily prayer) has us reciting that, “Hayya ‘alas Salah, Hayya ‘alal Falah.” ‘Come to prayer, come to success’ and the believer’s response is “Laa hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil ‘Aliyyil ‘Azheem.” That there is no hawla, no help and no power except in Allah (AJ).
“And there is no Support/strength, nor power except by Allah, The Sublimely Exalted, The Magnificent.”
All Strength and Power Comes from Allah (AJ)
It means that when we sit and make contemplation, Prophet ﷺ gave for us that, ‘Say that’ because the deep reality is that you have no ability to pray. You have no ability to come to any type of Divinely success without the Might and Majesty of Allah (AJ). ‘Izzati wa jalalihi, by His Might and His Majesty. That’s why Allah (AJ) has us saying that when the prayer and the azaan (call to prayer) is going off, repeat to yourself “Laa hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil ‘Aliyyil ‘Azheem.”
“And there is no Support/strength, nor power except by Allah, The Sublimely Exalted, The Magnificent.”
When you can’t complete your ibadah (worship) and you can’t compete or complete your worshipness, you’re dying and you’re being defeated; not to be content with that. It means you are slowly being slaughtered and the power against that is the zikr (Divine remembrance) of “Laa hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil ‘Aliyyil ‘Azheem.” Every day, hundred times minimum. When you find that your energy, your hawla (strength) and quwwah (power). That you feel there’s no help reaching to you to get to your worshipness and that you’re not reaching a quwwa, a power. That’s why, again, the meditation, tafakkur and contemplation.
Shaitan and Our Nafs are Terrified of Divine Power
If you feel that’s not reaching to you, you have to recite and keep reciting “Laa hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”. Make your connection asking Allah (AJ) that, ‘Please send Your help and send Your power for without that, I cannot pray. I cannot achieve any goodness.’ That’s a might and a majesty and a light that comes to the soul. It comes to the soul and slap shaitan in the head and slaps the nafs (ego) in the head, ‘Get off the chair’. The two of them are frightened by that power.
That’s why this world is against Islam. The mere azaan (call to prayer) puts terror in the heart of those two. When they hear the azaan, they know that these servants and these souls are potentially reaching to a power. If that power should reach that third individual, he smacks them off the chair and he hits them off the chair. As soon as he sit upon that chair, he will instruct the body according to Allah’s (AJ) Will and desire. That, ‘Now pray to your lord. Wash before you pray’.
Rijalullah Have the Strength of a Thousand Men
The one whom does not pray, he’s not clever. Is shaitan (satan) sitting on his head? That’s nothing to be proud of. Like a donkey that reached to nothing, like a farm animal that lost out into the field. That we have to visualize the reality, visualize these things that, ‘How can I let shaitan sit upon my chair? How can I let my nafs (ego) sit upon my chair and humiliate my soul to be nothing?’ It means then their zikrs (Divine remembrance), their practices is a means of power.
So, imagine that when that soul becomes empowered, how much shaitan is fearful of that. We said before the Hadith, Prophet ﷺ is the one whom reaches a reality and rijal (people of maturity) and manhood is like the strength of a thousand men, thousand men. So, what happens to those two other partners if the one sitting on that chair is like a thousand men? It means they’re defeated. They’re brought down, continuously brought down.
Spiritual Practices Burn Your Nafs and Shaitan
Every practice they do burns those two. Every zikr (Divine remembrance) they recite burns the two and they become like dogs at the feet of the soul under each of his feet. Every zikr they do, one dog is burning and the nafs (ego) – the other dog is burning. That’s what Allah (AJ) wanted for us; not when the beast is on the chair and that we’re like a dog under their feet. The concept of rijal (people of maturity) and the way of following the Holy Companions, following the Ahlul Bayt (holy family of Prophet ﷺ) so that one day we could truly follow the way of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
What distinguished Prophet ﷺ from all prophets (as) is the Might and Majesty that Allah (AJ), ‘Izzati wa jalalihi (by His Might and Majesty) dressed the authority of Prophet ﷺ. The extent in which his might and power put his shaitan under his feet, his nafs under his feet like no other prophet (as) of Allah (AJ). As a result, his eternal destiny and destination is the sultanate (kingdom). As a result of that power, he sits on the seat of authority for all of creation representing Allah (AJ).
Enter and Exit by the Door of Truthfulness (Holy Qur’an, 17:80)
Throughout the heavens and throughout the physical world, wherever creation is creation, it’s king and its authority – what Allah (AJ) refers to Sultanan Naseera (Victorious King).
17:80 – “Wa qul Rabbi adkhelni mudkhala Sidqin wa akhrejni mukhraja Sidqin waj’al li min ladunka Sultanan NaSeera.” (Surat Al-Isra)
“Say: O my Lord! Let my entry be by the Gate of Truth and Honour, and likewise my exit by the Gate of Truth and Honour; and grant me from Your Presence a Victorious King to aid (me).” (The Night Journey, 17:80)
That it has the gate of truth, must be entered through the gate of truth and your exit must be through the Maka’as Siddiq; the gate of truth entering in and exiting from truthfulness. We described truthfulness means: be loyal to your love. As a result, they are able to enter into the presence of Sultanan Naseera. The sultan where other people want to say, ‘It’s this, it’s that,’ and Mawlana Shaykh (Q) would get very angry. That you know Arabic and it means sultan is sultan. Sultanan Naseera is a title in which Allah (AJ) gave to the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. He is the Sultan (King). As a result, his nation inherits from that reality.
When We Leave Our Salah, We Leave Our Islam
That’s why Prophet ﷺ is describing: the one whom leaves his salah is leaving his Islam. When he leaves his salah (daily prayer), he’s given his chair of authority and walked away from his chair and he’s a dog under the feet of shaitan and his nafs (ego).
‘An Jabirin anna AnNabi ﷺ qala: “Inna baynar rajuli wa baynash shirki wal kufri, tarka asSalah” [Sahih Muslim]
Narrated by Jabir (ra) that the Prophet (pbuh) said, “Verily, between a man and polytheism and disbelief is abandoning the daily obligatory prayer.” (Sahih Muslim 82)
How he then can say he has anything to do with Islam? That’s the danger. People think it’s something, ‘I pray to God in a way that I like.’ Rubbish! You’re the dog of shaitan and nothing more. It’s not an acceptable position in rijal and maturity, whether for men or for women, to be under the feet of shayateen (devils) and under the feet of the nafs and everything that is inspired for us.
What Allah (AJ) is giving to us and says, ‘This chair I gave, you are My most noble creation and I’ve given most gifts, most amazing realities. Through your noble heart, you can reach My Divinely Presence. How dare you walk away from that chair and let shaitan to sit upon it and mark himself like a ridiculous clown, make you to do all sorts of horrific things?’ Then we understand why Allah (AJ) is angered.
Bani Adam Was Ignorant in Accepting Trust to the Heavens and Earth (Holy Qur’an, 33:72)
That, ‘I gave you an immense power, an immense gift. That the trust I gave to you, all of creation would have wanted that. You accepted it and you’re jahoolan and you’re ignorant of it’. It means the trust from Allah (AJ), “Wa laqad karramna bani adam”, ‘I have given to you an immense authority that you can inherit.’
17:70 – “Wa laqad karramna bani adama…” (Surat Al-Isra)
“And We have certainly honored the children of Adam…” (The Night Journey, 17:70)
‘You said yes in the world of souls’ and all of creation was frightened by that trust because they knew that they could not hold or contain that authority but mankind said, ‘Yes’ to Allah (AJ) that, ‘We will take it’.
33:72 – “Inna a’radnal amanata ‘alas Samawati wal ardi wal jibali, fa abayna an yahmilnaha wa ashfaqna minha wa hamalaha al Insanu, innahu kana zhaloman jahoola.” (Surat Al-Ahzab)
“Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was Oppressor/unjust and ignorant.” (The Combined Forces, 33:72)
Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ Represents All Nations
Islam is the only way to achieve that authority. That authority is based on the way that Allah (AJ) wants them to pray, the way that Allah (AJ) wants them to make remembrance. Everything that Prophet ﷺ brought is the King. All others were of a lesser reality. When the King comes, every agent before that means nothing. Every representation before that means nothing.
That’s why the Isra wal Mi’raj (Night Journey and Ascension) is that Allah (AJ) is showing all the prophets (as) and messengers of Allah (AJ), ‘Whatever you think your title is in the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, go to the back of the line’. That Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ leads the prayer to represent all nations into the presence of Allah (AJ). At the end of the salah (daily prayer) in ‘attahiyat (sitting on knees during prayer), they have to give their shahadah (testimony of faith) to Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Fight and Struggle for Your Seat of Authority
It means all of these realities teach us the immensity, the immensity of that seat. It’s not for somebody to give the seat up. Their life is to fight and to struggle for that seat of authority. When we understand the importance of that seat, ‘I must be seated on that chair’ and not one of three. One of three becomes “Thumma amano, thumma kafaroo”.
4:137 – “Innal ladheena amano thumma kafaro thumma amano thumma kafaroo thumma izdado kufran lam yakuni Allahu liyaghfira lahum wa la liyahdiyahum sabeela.” (Surat An-Nisa)
“Indeed, those who have believed then disbelieved, then believed, then disbelieved, and then increased in disbelief – Allah won’t forgive them, nor will He guide them on a path/way.” (The Women, 4:137)
That one day they believe, one day they disbelieve because like musical chairs when you were children, they have one chair left and three people are going around and sharing the chair. This is not acceptable by Allah (AJ) either. That one day you sit, you do good. As soon as they want, shaitan (satan) throws you off and the other two are now playing on the chair. When we understand what they want from us is your whole desires that, ‘My Lord, give me a strength and a power in which I sit on the chair of authority and that you put shaitan under my feet and you put my nafs (ego) under my feet and that let me to sit upon that chair’.
Divine Support to Your Soul Brings Down Your Shaitan and Nafs
At some point when the madad (support), “Idha jaa a Nasrullahi wal Fath. Wa ra-aitan naasa yadkhuloona fee deenil laahi afwajaa” or “Inna fatahna laka Fatham Mubeenan.”
110:1 – “Idha jaa a Nasrullahi wal Fath. (1) Wa ra-aitan naasa yadkhuloona fee deenil laahi afwajaa (2)” (Surat An-Nasr)
“When there comes the Divine Support of Allah and the Victory. (1) And thou dost see the people enter Allah’s Religion in crowds (2)” (The Divine Support, 110:1)
48:1 – “Inna fatahna laka Fatham Mubeena.” (Surat Al-Fath)
“Verily We have granted you [Muhammad (pbuh)] a manifest Victory.” (The Victory, 48:1)
That when Allah (AJ) grant a true victory and a true opening, it means that a madad and support eventually dresses upon the servant in which so much might and majesty from all the energies and the madad of all that surrounding upon that servant, that those two beings are brought down.
You’re Not Special When You Do What’s Mandatory
As a result, when that one sits upon that chair with their soul, they are inspired by the heavens. They hear through the heavens and this is Hadith al Qudsi (Holy Hadith).
‘An Abi Hurairah (ra) qala, Qala Rasulullahi ﷺ : InnAllaha ta’ala qala: “ …, wa la yazaalu ‘Abdi yataqarrabu ilayya bin nawafile hatta ahebahu, fa idha ahbabtuhu kunta Sam’ahul ladhi yasma’u behi, wa Basarahul ladhi yubsiru behi, …” [Hadith Qudsi, Sahih al Bukhari, Raqam: 6502)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) that: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that: Allah the Almighty said: “…My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees…” [Holy Hadith, Authentic by al-Bukhari, # 6502]
They’re not a people who only do fard (obligatory). Why the Hadith says that, ‘They did the fard. No, they did voluntary worshipness’? Well, because fard meant nothing. When you do that which is mandatory and you think you’re special because of it, this means nothing. Mandatory was mandatory. It was not a choice.
Like the Holy Face, the Throne Has Seven Points
You know when something is mandatory, you don’t have a choice not to do it. So, it means of course they have to have met the mandatory otherwise, they’re not even a category in this Hadith. Those who did their mandatory, now they’re extraordinary worshipness. It means they do everything now from love. They did the mandatory and everything they do now is an expression of love for the Divine, the love for Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. As a result of that love, that Hadith is describing the inhabitants of that chair because in reality, the Divinely Face is a throne.
So, face and throne is the same; face and chair because a glorified chair is a throne. Has what? Has four legs, two in the front, two in the back, has two arm rests and then the seat in which you sit upon it. That’s seven points. One, two, three, four, five, six and the tongue of the chair, the seat of the chair, seven. That represents the Face of Allah (AJ), Face of the Divinely Presence because Allah (AJ) has no face, the face of authority.
A Position of Authority is Signified by a Chair
So, the throne and Ayatul Kursi (Verse of the Throne) and the realities of the kursi and the throne and the position of authority is signified by a chair. So, this is a small chair from the greater chair in which the faculties of the one whom sit upon that, the real inhabitant, not the satanic one.
Lord of the Rings was the false king in which shaitan had come upon that king and put him like in cobwebs and then he was like a demon standing next to a king who was asleep in cobwebs and talking, talking. When they came into the presence, they smacked him and said, ‘Get out of here. We’re not talking to you. We’re talking to the king that he has to wake up’. Shaitan is not somebody that Allah (AJ) pays attention to. Even if he steals the chair, he’s not the inhabitant of that chair. He’s not the right the rightful owner of that chair.
When Your Soul Sits in the Chair, You Move Towards Becoming Rabbaniyoon
But when the soul takes its rightful position and istiqamon and it’s firm on its belief, sits upon that chair, that Holy Hadith begins to open, Hadith al Qudsi for them in which Allah (AJ) is so pleased with that soul that achieved that reality and that authority.
As a result of that reality, what happens? Is that, ‘I become the hearing in which you hear. I become the seeing in which you see. I become the breath in which you breathe. I become the hands in which you touch, the feet in which you move, the tongue in which you speak and so much so that you become Rabbaniyoon (Lordly Souls)’. It means that you’re of a lordly, lofty nature and merely “Kun faya koon” (36:82) because the will of that servant matches the Will of Allah (AJ), matches the will of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
‘An Abi Hurairah (ra) qala, Qala Rasulullahi ﷺ: InnAllaha ta’ala qala: “ Wa maa taqarrubi ilayya ‘abdi be shayin ahubba ilayya memma iftaradhtu ‘alayhi. Wa la yazaalu ‘abdi yataqarrabu ilayya binnawafile hatta uhebbahu, fa iza ahbabtuhu kunta Sam’ahul lazi yasma’u behi, wa Basarahul lazi yubsiru behi, wa Yadahul lati yabteshu beha, wa Rejlahul lati yamshi beha. Wa la in sa alani la a’teyannahu, …” [Hadith al Qudsi, Sahih al Bukhari, Raqam: 6502)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) that: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that: Allah the Almighty said: “… My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask (something) of Me, I would surely give it to him, …” [Holy Hadith, Authentic by al-Bukhari, # 6502]
Ulul Amr Have Heavenly Authority
That is “Atiullah, atiur Rasul wa Ulil amre minkum”.
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat An-Nisa)
“… Obey Allah, Obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
The Ulul Amr (saints), they obeyed Allah (AJ). They obeyed Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and Allah (AJ) then says, then they are to be obeyed. As a result, they are dressed from the ears, dressed from the eyes, dressed from the breath, dressed from the hands. Their hands sit on an authority. They’re dressed with their qadam and their feet. Their path and their movement is based upon the soul and what the heaven has required from them.
As a result, the seat of authority is their tongue and that their tongue is authorized tongue. It has a power, has a light and has an energy and has the power of isharat (sign) and guidance. What their tongue says is the will of the heavens and their tongue can move the Earth left and they can move the Earth right because it comes as authorized realities from the Divinely Presence.
Empower Your Soul and Take Back Your Chair!
So, it means there’s all the meditation, all the zikrs (Divine remembrances), all the practices are for what? Why to make the tafakkur (contemplation)? Why to do the zikrs? Why to do your awrad (daily practice)? Why to make your daily connection? To get your soul off the floor.
The two hoodlums that are sitting on your chair is to get up, do your practices, do your zikrs, do all of the connection.
