Why Do We Do All This in Hajj?
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ٱلْرَّجِيمِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah (AJ) from the accursed Satan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Always a reminder for myself, ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence.
أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنكُم… ﴿٥٩﴾ …
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat an-Nisa)
“…Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
The Best of Worshipness is Seeking Divine Knowledges
Alhamdulillah, that Allah (AJ) granted us immense blessings of the first ten days of Hijjah and hajj (pilgrimage) and the eternal reality of pilgrimage. In which some people say don’t seek out knowledges and realities, but our only purpose in life is and our existence was to seek out knowledges. Our only existence and reality that Allah (AJ) created us was for worshipness. The best of worshipness is seeking knowledges in which the servant who seeks out knowledges, everything in Allah’s (AJ) creation praises and prays upon the servant who seeks knowledges and realities. These are the eternal dress.
So, imagine two servants: one who comes to the Earth and focuses only on external – how to wash their body, how to pray with their body, how to do physical aspects of Islamic belief when in return that body is going into the dirt. But the one who comes and uses their body as a means in which to achieve an eternal reality for all of eternity. As much as you wash the body, that has nothing to do with your eternal journey. [It] Just means your body was clean. As much as you prayed in a state of physical belief and not in the belief of your iman (faith) and with your soul, that again has its limited capacity and limited reality.
Don’t Give Up on Your Journey Until You’ve Reached the Kawthar
Those who follow their deen (religion) only to the level of physicality, they exclude themselves from the immensity of our spiritual potential. The highest potential is to seek knowledge and those who seek the knowledges and ascension towards their eternal reality. Every step in that eternity is a dress for all of eternity. So, this not something that can be compared. That when we take care of only our temporal belief, our physical belief versus those who seek reaching out towards their soul’s realities.
We described just the Safa and Marwah understanding. It’s not for the people of hajj (pilgrimage) only. It’s not for once in your lifetime to go and to jog between…back and forth between two points seven times, but it’s an eternal reality for the soul. It represents our lifelong journey. Don’t give up your journey in life until you’ve reached to the Kawthar (The Fountain of Abundance).
What You Circumambulate is Your Focus in Life
When people think they are struggling, they have struggled, they did such a great job, they give themselves a reward. Awliyaullah (saints) come to teach from the heart of Prophet ﷺ: actually, the seventh spring is the reward. That if Allah (AJ) is dressing the servant from the Kawthar and they speak from the Kawthar, they are the Kawthari realities. This was the purpose of our life. That can’t be compared to anything physical. It’s to motivate people that they must continue.
That everything is based on our spiritual. Everything is based on the soul. If somebody thinks once in their lifetime, they’re going to make a tawaf (circumambulation), the reality of the tawaf of the Ka’bah is one: whatever you circumambulate is your focus in life. So, make sure that your focus is on Allah (AJ) and His beloved Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Each tawaf is symbolic with a name that you have in Paradise. Why Prophet ﷺ describe for us that we have seven paradises if you’re not supposed to know about it? If you’re not supposed to know what the realities are and you’re not supposed to know who your name is in these paradises, why say that we have seven paradises? Just say we have a Heavenly Kingdom. InshaAllah, you get there.
Don’t Starve Your Children of Divinely Knowledges
Everything that Prophet ﷺ brought for us was for us to attain. Just like in life, if you have a father that says, ‘There’s no need for you to study. You just go and, you know, go out into the field and do something with the sheep and the cows and plow the dirt’. But that’s not the role of the father. The father’s role is to encourage the children to achieve their maximum potential, not their minimum potential, their maximum potential. So, if the father is threatened by the potential of the knowledge and the ‘uloom that those children would have, then he’s holding them back for no reason.
So, this is a dangerous condition in which scholars, advisers, people may feel threatened by knowledges and tell other people there’s no need for them. But if your father does that in dunya (material world), the children will suffer because they’ll be told not to achieve anything. But this world is all about achievement.
It’s Our Responsibility to Achieve Our Eternal Reality
Now imagine the spiritual realm in which Allah (AJ) says, ‘I gave you your dunya so that you could achieve lofty stations in the proximity to Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Why did you go on Earth and you didn’t try to achieve anything and you thought it was okay just to achieve the bare minimum?’ So, it doesn’t make any logical sense when people talk like that. It is the responsibility of students to achieve their eternal reality.
What is the eternal reality of that tawaf (circumambulation)? What are my seven names in paradises? Why my Safa and Marwah is my eternal journey? Why am I drinking from the zamzam and imitating to be from the Kawthar realities and the Kawthar people? Why am I going to the seven jamarat (three stone pillars), to the three jamarats, and throwing stones at them, seven stones each? What’s the reality of 21 stones? What’s the reality of these different levels of shaitans that we describe, the shaitan that blocks the faith?
Our Biggest Shaitan is On Our Physical Plane
If you have iman and faith, the shaitan that tries to come after your faith is smaller. So, the greatest shaitan is on your physical plane. Those who don’t achieve beyond their physical understanding, they are in a continuous battle with the biggest of their shaitans.
That’s the whole purpose of Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) taking his journey up and Sayyidatina Hagar (as) coming and describing, ‘InshaAllah, whatever the Prophet ﷺ has been ordered, we are submitting’ as a symbol of when you build your faith and your inner reality of your faith gives you yaqeen and certainty and assists you in fighting your devil. So, anyone who says stay on just your physical plane is advising you to stay with your biggest shaitan.
Sacrifice of Yourself Like Sayyidina Isma’il (as)
Your greatest fight against your shaitan is if you achieve iman (faith) because your iman comes to support you, like Sayyidatina Hagar (as) and support you, and keep advising and whispering to you from your soul that you’re correct.
You’re on the right path. Keep struggling. Keep going in Allah’s (AJ) way. Don’t submit to your bad desires and the bad whisperings of shayateen (devils). All the way to the reality of Sayyidina Isma’il (as), what we described is that your Maqamul Ihsan (Station of Moral Excellence) comes and tells you, ‘Don’t worry, everything is going to be all right’.
37:102 – “Falamma balagha ma’ahus sa’ya qala ya bunayya inni ara fee almanami annee adhbahuka fanzhur ma dha tara, Qala ya abati if’al ma tu maru, satajidunee inshaAllahu minas Sabireen.” (Surat As-Saffat)
“And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think. He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, one of the Patient/steadfast.’” (Those Who Set the Ranks, 37:102)
Your Love and Firmness in Belief Will Constantly Be Tested
Why? Because that Maqamul Ihsan (Station of Moral Excellence) sees there is no slaughtering and that Allah (AJ) has prepared for you a lamb to ease your suffering which was all that we talked about during this hajj (pilgrimage). So, these are eternal realities from malakut (heavenly realm). When the student understands these talks and understands physical talks, they are a thousand degrees different than the talks and the realities of the world of light and the eternal objective of our journey upon this Earth. We pray that Allah (AJ) give us from our eternal reality and to seek a means towards Allah (AJ). That everything in our life is a means in which to reach our goal.
So, this means in our life is our most important ni’mat (blessing). That when Allah (AJ) wants the servant to reach, He provides them a rope. It’s the servant’s responsibility to hold tight to that rope and don’t let go. Love will be tested. That’s why Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) was being tested, Sayyidatina Hagar (as) was being tested, Sayyidina Isma’il (as) was being tested in their love and their firmness in belief. We pray that Allah (AJ) grant us from that firmness, grant us from that yaqeen and certainty in our love for Allah (AJ), love for Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, and love for awliyaullah, inshaAllah, here and hereafter for the malakut and from the dunya (material world), that we always be under all their nazars (gazes), inshaAllah.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
