I seek refuge in Allah (AJ) from the accursed Satan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Always a reminder for myself, ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence.
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat an-Nisa)
“…Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
Destroy the Veil Blocking You From the Divinely Presence
Safar, that Allah (AJ), the month of knowledge and wisdom, the month of running to the cave and seeking refuge from all that is other than Allah (AJ), the month of testing. So, that the heart can open and the hijab (veil) between us and the reality is the ‘me’. I am the veil that blocks me from Allah’s (AJ) Divinely presence, from what Allah (AJ) wants to show of every haqaiq and every reality. Its pardah, its veil, its wall, whatever we want to call is ‘me’. So, my life was how to destroy the ‘me’, the nafs (ego) within me, the character within me; not to raise it, not to glorify it, but to bring it down.
Rid Yourself of Yourself as You Begin Your Journey
So, that the reality that Allah (AJ) wants to shine through. So, that ‘I become your hearing, I become your seeing, I become the breath in which you breathe, I become the hands in which you touch, I become the feet in which you walk, I become the tongue in which you speak,’ a Divine mirror.
‘An Abi Hurayra (ra) qala, qala anNabi ﷺ, Yaqulo Allahu ta’ala: ana ‘inda zanni ‘abdi bi, wa ana ma’ahu iza zakarani, fa in zakarani fi nafsihi zakartuhu fi nafsi, wa in zakarani fi malayi zakartuhu fi malayi khayrin minhum. Wa in taqarraba ilayya beshebrin, taqarrabtu ilayhi zera’an. Wa in qarraba ilayya zera’an, taqarrabtu ilayhi ba’an. Wa in atani yamshi ataytuhu harwalah.” [Sahih Al Bukhari, 6970, Sahih Muslim 2675]
Narrated by Abi Hurayra (as) that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said that “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as my servant thinks/expects me. I am with him when he mentions/remembers me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to myself. And if he mentions me in an association/congregation, I mention him in a greater/higher association than that. If he draws near to me a hand’s span/length, I draw near to him by the length of a cubit/arm’s length. If he draws near to Me by the length of a cubit, I draw near to him by the length of a fathom (6 feet). And if he comes to Me walking, I run to him.’” [Authentic by Al-Bukhari 6970, and Muslim 2675]
But, ‘Rid yourself of yourself and come to My Divinely Presence.’ A reminder for a story that awliyaullah give an example: that a very powerful businessman wanted to go for hajj (pilgrimage) and in those times when you go for hajj, you pay off all your debts. Most of the people, they don’t know, you know, how long it’s going to take. They sell everything, liquidate, and they take their life with them in a bag; bag of coins. This wealthy businessman wants to go for hajj. He tells his wife, ‘We’re going for hajj.’
Understand What is Really Valuable
He makes arrangements. He takes his bag of cash and starts to head out and thinks to himself that, ‘Why should I go alone? Let me find one of these babajis. I take him with me.’ So, he finds one of the pirs, the shaykhs of the area, says, ‘I’m going for hajj. Why you don’t come? I take you with me for hajj.’ [He] Says, ‘Sure, no problem. You’re inviting, I’m coming.’
He goes. They make the preparation. They get on their ship. This ship has to go all the way on its journey for the hajj (pilgrimage). As they’re sitting on the ship, the shaykh is sitting and looking at the man and the man has his safeguarding, his bag, his bag of nuts, his bag of cash. He’s opening this bag and keep playing with all his coins and his money and his wife is sitting next to him.
Be Aware of Your Adab and Pride
Then he starts to look at it and he starts to count his coins. ‘Oh, look how many coins I have!’ Then he looks to the shaykh and says, ‘Oh Shaykh, why are you looking at my bag of coins?’ You see the adab (manners) and the character of people. ‘Is it that you want something? I have all these coins. Is there something that you want from it?’ He says, ‘Yes, if you’re asking, I’ll take.’
So, ‘Oh, look at…what kind of shaykh is this? I thought you guys were supposed to be pious guys and you don’t want anything. You don’t eat. You don’t drink, nothing. You don’t exist on this Earth like a normal human being.’ The shaykh just stayed quiet. He [merchant] says, ‘How much? If I was going to ask you from this bag of coins, how much would you want since you’re putting your eyes on my bag of coins?’
Every Bargain You Make Comes With a Test
Say, ‘If you’re asking, I take half.’ ‘Half? Crazy people, you are!’ He got very angry. ‘Half my coins, half my life saving!’ He said, ‘If you’re asking, half, half.’ He took one coin and threw it. ‘This is enough for you.’ Then he put his coins, he hid them and he hid them in a compartment.
Shaykh took the coin, he kissed it and put it in his pocket. He says, ‘Alhamdulillah, at least one coin came from there, from this adventure.’ He’s sitting with him and the shaykh goes back into his zikr (Divine remembrance), his contemplation. Then Allah (AJ), on this ship, the man begins to sleep, fall asleep. There are monkeys in the bottom of the ship because they take a whole cargo as they are journeying. Allah (AJ) inspired the monkeys on the bottom of the ship to release themselves. They somehow get out.
Nothing Happens But By Allah’s (AJ) Will
The monkeys get out of the cage and whoosh! – start running all over the ship, monkeys are running. One specific monkey, by order of Allah (AJ), ‘Go grab the bag.’ The monkey grabs this bag where it was hidden, runs up the pole of the ship. At that time, the man wakes up. He’s, he’s having a heart attack. He starts to scream at everybody, ‘The monkey stole my bag of cash. This is my entire bag of cash. I’m going on the journey of my life. I have nothing! He took everything!’
The monkey is sitting over there, opens the bag and starts to take the coins and one by one throw it into the ocean. He took another coin. The man is screaming. He takes another coin and throws it into the ocean. He took another coin, threw it into the ocean until there were no coins left.
Our Anger in Difficulty Blinds Us From Divine Lessons
The man began to curse the shaykh. ‘I don’t know who you are, what type of curse you are, that I was going to go for hajj. I brought all these things. From the moment I met you, I faced nothing but difficulty from you. You came, you wanted even my property and now look, look, the monkeys came. They threw all my cash into the ocean.’
Shaykh just looked at him that this guy is getting very aggressive and angry. So, he just got his zikr (Divine remembrance) and walked. As he’s walking now, it’s like coming, a storm, for the boat. The wife is standing a little bit down. The shaykh whispers something into the wife’s ear and then walks away. At that moment, the ship hits. The wife goes overboard, goes right overboard into the ocean. The man is gone crazy now. He says, ‘You are truly the wrong cursed person.’
Stay Calm, Be Patient and Have Faith
‘I lost all my money and now the ocean took my wife – gone, everything is gone.’ The shaykh just went in the back and was doing his zikr (Divine remembrance), being calm and patient. The ship finally docked. As it’s arriving to dock and to land, the man looks and he sees his wife on the shore. She’s just waiting there for him with a bag.
The ship stops. The man gets off, runs to his wife and said, ‘I don’t know what happened. The monkeys took all my money. They threw everything into the ocean. Then you went overboard and flew. [She] Said, ‘You don’t know who that man is? Whatever Allah (AJ) tested you with, as soon as he walked by me, he whispered into my ear: ‘You’re going to fall, but don’t worry, we’re carrying you.’ I hit, I went overboard, immediately like a wind came from nowhere picked me, took me. I don’t know how I arrived. I landed on the shore and in my hand is this bag of coins.’
Your Hijrah to Your Reality is Not Meant to Be Easy
The man now doesn’t know what to do. He has not the guts to apologize, but the shaykh, he says, ‘It’s enough. This is where me and you we part.’ That you thought this process is going to be easy and you thought this journey to your life, is to your lord, is going to be an easy process?
That when Allah (AJ) inspire us to take a higher path, to take a path towards realities and make a hijrah (migration) because it’s not just the hajj (pilgrimage) you do once. Everyday is our hajj. Everyday is a hijrah towards Allah (AJ) until you take your last breath and you are gone.
Allah (AJ) Takes Your Dunya in Exchange for Akhirah (Holy Qur’an, 9:111)
When Allah (AJ) inspired that you’re going to take with these shaykhs, your way of ma’rifah (gnosticism) and your reality, it’s not coming easy. There’s a price to pay. There is something going to be taken. Allah (AJ) describe, I think in Surah Tawbah, there’s a bargain to be made.
Allah (AJ) going to take your dunya (material world) from you because you didn’t come for dunya. Allah (AJ) takes your dunya from you and gives you your akhirah (hereafter) in exchange. It’s a system that is an ancient system and it works.
9:111 – “Inna Allaha Ashtara Minal Mu’umineena ‘Anfusahum Wa ‘Amwalahum Bi anna Lahum AlJannata, …Wa’dan ‘Alayhi Haqqan fit Tawrati wal Injeeli wal Qur’ani, Wa Man Awfa Bi ‘ahdihi Mina Allahi, Fastabshiro Bi bay’ikum Al Ladhi Baaya’tum Bihi, Wa Dhalika Huwal Fawzul ‘azeem.” (Surat At-Tawbah)
“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise…[It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in your Bayat which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great achievement. (The Repentance, 9:111)
Persevere Through Trials Without Questioning the Divine Path
If you check the lives of these shaykhs, everyone around them is from that reality. So, when they came into this town, there was a construction guy. He was building and building and building. He built a very beautiful home. Remember the beautiful home? It was all glass, marble staircase and he built with his own two hands. He put so much effort he put into that home, his wife even helped to build with him that home. The home went. He thought he was – all sorts of thoughts he was going to have for that house. The house went.
Then that man took his family and they went to a shack up in the area. It was a shack. It was literally 200 years old. Anyone who saw him said, ‘How you living in that shack that was so old and falling apart?’ He’s firm in his belief, never once said, ‘I don’t know what the heck this path is’ because he is a noble background, noble ancestor. That never his heart changed, never his thought changed, never he thought, ‘Oh my god, this is like a cursed path. That I’m going to lose everything.’
Trust in Allah’s (AJ) Mercy and Keep Strong in Your Faith
Just keep doing zikr (Divine remembrance). Keep doing your practices. Keep doing everything. It was but a time and Allah (AJ) opened a beautiful home. That somewhere, out of nowhere, the person came along, came. The paperwork came. They don’t even know how it came and everything opened for them.
Allah’s (AJ) not in need to take anything because He wants it, but He wants to test the people. Then there’s another person from the jammah (congregation) who comes. He served all his life and served and never asked a fee. All his family told him, ‘Why are you sitting there serving when you have education? You could go out and you could earn money. You could earn this and you could earn that?’ His consistency in his belief that, ‘I don’t need any of that. Allah (AJ) will provide. Allah (AJ) sends the other people to provide.’
Are You Holding On to Your Possessions Like a Trapped Monkey?
In the end, somebody passed away and they gave him a lottery. When Allah (AJ) says, ‘I give you from places you never imagine.’ It means the life of the tariqah (spiritual path) is real. This is not just stories. Ask the people’s lives here – what Allah (AJ) took from them, brought them down and when Allah (AJ) wanted, brought them back up. Allah’s (AJ) not in need of anything. It’s that we are in need to be tested.
Is it you came for those things and you be like a monkey? You know how they trap the monkey? They put a hole in the tree and they put some fruits, but only a hole that’s thick enough to put your hand like this (the shaykh joins his fingers together). As soon as the monkey grabs (the shaykh forms a fist), his fist can’t come out. Are you going to grab this world like that? Where the monkey was stuck and then every hunter coming to kill him.
Surrender Your Will Voluntarily and Be Firm on Your Path
It means then they teach them that don’t be attached to anything. This way is real. Allah (AJ) would deflate and bring everything down. If Allah (AJ) wants, He can bring everything back up, but the path has a cost. Are you willing to pay the price? Even if you’re not willing, if Allah (AJ) enrolled you, you’re will, then Allah (AJ) will take it. It’s much easier to give it in your life willfully than to run from your path. Every type of hardships begin to follow. That’s why Allah (AJ) make, “Istiqaam fit tariqa.” Keep your istiqaam and the firmness of your tariqah (spiritual path) and your way.
72:16 – “Wa allawis taqaamoo ‘alat tareeqati la asqaynaahum maa’an ghadaqaa” (Surat Al-Jinn)
“And [ Allah revealed] that: “If they had only remained firm on their tariqa (straight path), We would have bestowed on them Rain/water in abundance. ” (The Jinn, 72:16)
Awliya Operate With a Higher Remembrance (Holy Qur’an, 94:4)
After you keep your firmness, Allah (AJ) will open like oceans of water upon the servant as a ni’mat and a blessing upon them. In every way and every understanding in that way because this when we describe Surat al Inshirah. The understanding of Inshirah as an opening towards ma’rifah (gnosticism), that “Wa raf ‘ana laka zikrak.”
94:4 – “Wa rafa’na laka dhikrak.” (Surat Ash-Sharh)
“And raised high for you your remembrance.” (The Relief, 94:4)
By the time that Allah (AJ) is crushing them from ayatul kareem (generous verse of Holy Qur’an) before, as soon as they arrive, and awliyaullah (saints) want to open “Wa raf ‘ana laka zikrak” for the servant by order of Allah (AJ). It means he hits them in such a way that when they came back up, they saw that everything is praising Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. “Wa raf ‘ana laka zikrak.” Because Allah (AJ) shows the servant, ‘I’m going to open your ears and the reality of your soul.’ When your ears open, you see that Allah (AJ) is describing, ‘I have raised the honour and the zikr of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ throughout creation. You don’t have ears to hear it.’ But at that maqam and at that station, when they’ve been tested through those difficulties, Allah (AJ) begin to open within their heart.
Nabi Musa (as) Witnessed the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ That Awakened Him
It means their spiritual hearing, their spiritual vision, they realize everything is praising Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. What did Sayyidina Musa (Aas) see when he said, ‘I want to reach this maqam. I want to see you.’
7:143 – “Wa lamma jaa Musa limeeqatina wa kallamahu Rabbuhu, qala rabbi arinee anzhur ilayka, …” (Surat Al-A’raf)
“And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, “My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You.” …” (The Heights. 7:143)
When Allah (AJ) crushed all of the nafs, crushed all of the desires. Allah (AJ) said, ‘We send Our glory upon the mountain.’ It means at that moment, he “Wa raf ‘ana laka zikrak.” He went out and what he witnessed was the immensity of the light of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. If you
witnessed the light, it’s enough that you understood the mentioning and the zikr of Prophet ﷺ.
When Allah (AJ) is saying, ‘I raised your status.’ When Nabi Musa (as) didn’t want La ilaha illAllah, Musa RasulAllah (as), ‘I don’t want that. I want where the two rivers meet of La Ilaha illAllah Muhammadun RasulAllah ﷺ.’
18:60 – “Wa idh qala Mosa lefatahu laa abrahu hatta ablugha majma’a albahrayni aw amdiya huquba.” (Surat Al-Kahf)
“Behold, Moses said to his attendant, I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travel.” (The Cave, 18:60)
Through Every Difficulty of Crushing Comes Ease (Holy Qur’an, 94:5-6)
‘I want to see you.’ At that time when he got hit by that energy and that light, he understood “Wa raf ‘ana laka zikrak.” Then what we said in the tafsir of Surat Inshirah, the next ayah (verse) is what? “Inna ma’al ‘usri Yusra”, difficulty then ease. As soon as they enter now into “Inna ma’al ‘usri Yusran.”
94:5-6 – “Fa inna ma’al ‘usri yusran. (5) Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra. (6) ” (Surat Inshirah)
“For indeed, with every hardship [will be] ease. (5) Indeed, with difficulty [will be] relief. (6) ” (The Expansion, 94:5-6)
As soon as they enter into that ocean is like Safar. So, Safar is for the general people. That you want this love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, you want this reality, take this path of difficulty. Why Allah (AJ) mentioning twice? It’s that not because you took difficulty, everything became easy and goodbye, thank you, I got my diploma. Allah (AJ) say, ‘No, no, here we go again. It’s like a rollercoaster. Here comes again difficulty and through every crushing is an ease, is a new maqam (station). Every crushing is a new maqam. Every crushing is a new maqam.
Pass Through the Crushing to Open Divine Knowledges
So, it means the prophets understood that. That you have to be crushed. As soon as you understood that and want “Wa raf ‘ana laka zikrak,” Allah (AJ) said, ‘Then go to one of my servants. He’s going to crush you. He’s a Muhammadan representative and you wanted a knowledge of higher than what you understood. He will crush you. In the crushing, We will bestow these knowledges’.
18:65 – “Fawajada ‘abdan min ‘ibadinaa ataynahu rahmatan min ‘indina wa ‘allamnahu mil ladunna ‘ilma.” (Surat Al-Kahf)
“So they found one of Our servant from among Our servants, on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught [unseen/heavenly] knowledge from Our own Presence…” (The Cave, 18:65)
This is the month of knowledge and wisdom. Only through the difficulty and the crushing can Allah (AJ) bring out these knowledges and this wisdoms because the self will begin to crush and what happens? The Divine mirror begins to open. That mirror has ‘uloom ul awaleen wal akhireen (knowledges of the beginning and the end) because it’s a Divine light. When Allah (AJ) said, ‘I am going to be your hearing,’ is there a limit on what you can hear? It’s Hadith al Qudsi. ‘I would be the hearing of my servant.’
‘An Abi Hurairah (ra) qala, Qala Rasulullahi ﷺ : InnAllaha ta’ala qala: “ …, wa la yazaalu ‘Abdi yataqarrabu ilayya bin nawafile hatta ahebahu, fa idha ahbabtuhu kunta Sam’ahul ladhi yasma’u behi, wa Basarahul ladhi yubsiru behi, …” [Hadith Qudsi, Sahih al Bukhari, Raqam: 6502)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) that: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that: Allah the Almighty said: “…My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees…” [Holy Hadith, Authentic by al-Bukhari, # 6502]
Behind Every Difficulty Awaits a Higher Station
There’s no limit to what they hear. ‘I’ll be the seeing.’ What kind of light Allah (AJ) dressing their souls? If you can hear with this qudra (power), see with His qudra, what limit do they have of knowledges? The light already dressing them and blessing them. It means infinite capacity of which can’t even be understood. So, we pray that in this holy month, Allah (AJ) dress us and bless us and that every difficulty is for a new station and a new opening.
That Allah (AJ) keeping everything to be beatific and everything continuously to be refreshing and that it’s a real path. Many of the people’s lives who have been influenced by the shaykh, they were brought down, then brought back up. Their lives are a witness to the teachings and the reality of the shaykhs.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
