Hijrah (Migration) of the Heart: From Desires to Divine Purpose
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ٱلْرَّجِيمِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah (AJ) from the accursed Satan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Always a reminder for myself, ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence.
أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنكُم… ﴿٥٩﴾ …
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat an-Nisa)
“…Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
Entering the New Year with Love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
Alhamdulillah that Allah (AJ) grant for us to enter into this holy new year and be a blessed new year. That Muharram is opening of our hijrah (migration) calendar and that 12 months of journeying to the Divinely Presence. We pray that Allah (AJ) make it to be a blessed year, protected year. A year filled with ‘ishq (love) and muhabbat of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That Allah (AJ) grant us to receive His ni’mat and His blessings. Complete His favours upon ourselves, our families and our loved ones and community, inshaAllah.
Ma’rifah (Gnosticism) – The Greatest Gift from Allah (AJ)
That this way of ma’rifah, this way of haqqiqah (realities), this way of ‘azimah (determination), this way of realities is a tremendous gift by Allah (AJ). In a time in which ignorance is rampant and everywhere. For Allah (AJ) to grant the greatest gift is the gift of knowledges, that Allah’s (AJ) favours and blessings upon the knowledges. Because these knowledges are a power. They signify the power within the soul and its proximity to the Divinely Presence. Proximity to the authority and the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. This is the greatest gift that Allah (AJ) can give to a servant, are the realities and knowledges that draw the servant to the Divinely Presence.
That alhamdulillah Allah (AJ) inshaAllah to continue the flowing of the fountains of realities, the Kawthar (The Fountain of Abundance) oceans. All the way to the time of Sayyidina Mahdi (as) and the heavenly kingdom opening upon the earth and all of its immense realities from that point forward. Which no eyes have seen and no ears have ever heard. That to be recipients of that reality, to be blessed by those realities. That means every step that we take on this path is drawing us nearer into that ocean and to that reality.
Muharram and the Reality of Hijrah
The beginning of Muharram signifies the Islamic calendar. That calendar starts from the moment that Prophet ﷺ moved from the state of Makkah and struggling into the state of Madinatul Munawwara – the City of Lights. Everything that Prophet ﷺ does and did and will be doing has an eternal reality. It is not a history story. That 13 years of struggling in a state of Makkah and the state of the heart means that we have to struggle a lifetime within our heart. Disciplining our heart, taking every type of ‘ilah’ and every type of divinity or authority out of the heart.
The Heart Belongs Only to Allah (AJ)
That the state of the heart is for Allah (AJ). This world in which we live in is based on putting every other ilah into the heart. Every other type of authority that becomes superior. Anytime an authority enters your heart and it becomes superior to the authority of Allah (AJ), we have made it an ilah. That’s why the zikr (chanting), the first zikr of every way and this way and every tariqah (spiritual path) is, “La ilaha illAllah” – there is no divinity but in Allah (AJ). It means that nothing enters into the state of the heart. Although everything from six directions is trying to enter into the heart to become an authority. That Allah (AJ) is asking from us, demanding from us that don’t bring any authority into your heart that becomes supreme to what Allah (AJ) wants for us. Every desire that comes into the heart to become supreme over what Allah (AJ) desires for us.
The Spiritual Battle for Heart
So, our whole battle is to safeguard the kingdom and the heart. Like every movie and every video game is the kingdom is within our heart. Our life is to secure the heart, safeguard the heart. That shaitan (satan) is bombarding the heart from six directions. We described so many times that from fashion, food, desires, from every direction shaitan is casting rockets into the kingdom. Into the heart of the servant and to overtake their desires.
When they begin to desire what shaitan wants over the desire of what the heavens want for us, it is becoming a divinity. Because anything that we choose above Allah (AJ), before Allah (AJ) then it is becoming a divinity for us. That how could you choose anything above what The Creator wants for us? So, this is the great battle. This is the great struggle for the servant in keeping what Allah (AJ) wants from them. That signifies the state of Makkah. Makkah represents the heart.
Awakening to The Divine Message
The Ka’bah represents the heart of the servant. That Prophet ﷺ represents the first state – is to receive the message. Everybody will receive the message at a certain time. If they’re in their living life in which they receive the message that, ‘I have to change my ways. I have to no longer follow my bad desires, my evil desires, my impure desires. I have to move towards what is a heavenly desire.’ If they don’t receive it in this world then they receive it within the grave, that is the great equalizer. Nobody enters the grave without understanding there is a heavenly kingdom. That’s the whole purpose of death. It means that Allah (AJ) grants that everybody will taste of death.
21:35 – “Kullu nafsin dhayiqatul Mawti, wa nablokum bish sharri wal khayri fitnatan, wa ilayna turja’oon.” (Surat Al-Anbiya)
“Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. to Us must ye return.” (The Prophets, 21:35)
So means everybody will find that there is a kingdom of light and at that time they have to submit. At that time they have to destroy the evilness that they built within themselves. Everything other than what was The Creator and The Will of The Creator within the heart. This is the state of Makkah and this is the state of struggling for the servant. The hijrah represents, the calendar represents the time in which Prophet ﷺ moved from struggling. Moving and taking to the city of lights and that is a reality of the hijrah.
True Meaning of Hijrah
The hijrah that people are imitating by following every month is just an imitation. But the tariqahs and the path of reality is to emulate exactly what Prophet ﷺ was bringing upon this earth. That at some point in our life we are struggling with our hearts, struggling with our desires. The real hijrah opens for us when Allah (AJ) grants a desire within the heart that, ‘I need something bigger, I need something better. I need something eternal.’ Something clicks within the heart and the brain of the servant, ‘I have to seek my Creator. I have to seek The Will and The Desire of my Creator. I have to understand that I was created for a greater purpose.’ So means everybody’s ‘aha moment’ in which they came towards religion, came towards spirituality. Came towards The Creator and something greater than themselves and their desires – that was the opening of their hijrah. That’s what signifies this Islamic calendar.
Muharram: A New Beginning Towards Light
When the physicality understands that it has been corrupted and that it is not the final, it is not the goal. It is just the means. The goal was the heavenly kingdom and the soul. The significance of Prophet ﷺ moving is that very moment. The ‘aha moment’ in which the servant realizes that ‘There is a greater purpose for my existence.’ As soon as they recognize that, they have begun the hijrah and this is signified by Muharram.
Muharram means no forbidden. That start your month, start this journey in which you’re asking, ‘I need to seek the world of light my Lord.’ Whatever state I’m in or however wise I am or how many times I have done this. How many years I have traveled this path, each one and each time is above another knower. That if this is a first time then we’re asking, ‘Ya Rabbi open for me Your heavenly lights. That grant me my pilgrimage. Grant me from my physicality to begin to understand the world of light. To enter into that world of light.’ That world of light is an eternal journey which has no end. There is no limit to it and there is no one who can reach any capacity or any limit of knowledge.
Renewal Through Khidmat (Service), Good Character & Good Deeds
For Allah (AJ) describes: above every knower is another knower. Because of the infinite nature of God Almighty’s oceans of mercy and rahmah and knowledges. It is infinite in its capacity.
نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَاتٍ مَّن نَّشَاءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِي عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌ ﴿٧٦﴾
12:76 – “…Narfa’u darajatin man nashao, Wa fawqa kulli dhee ‘ilmin ‘aleem.” (Surat Yusuf)
“… We raise in degrees whom We will, and Above every knower there is a greater knower.” (Joseph, 12:76)
If this is the 50th Muharram that we’re spending in this way, again, it is every ocean there is a higher ocean. Every reality that has been achieved is a greater reality awaiting. That becomes the significance of what Prophet ﷺ wants for us. That every year that you struggled with yourself and struggled with testing, struggled with character. Muharram comes and grants for us an opening to move again. Move again to a higher level, a higher understanding, a higher character, better character. That to increase our khidmat, increase our himmah (zeal), to increase our service in the way. Increase our deeds that are pleasing to Allah (AJ).
Keep the Fountain of Life Flowing through Service and Faith in Action
So there is never a point in which we reach and say that, ‘I’ve done it, I did it, I did my best thank you very much.’ Then become stagnant like stagnant water that becomes stale and is no longer alive. Our life has to be a flowing fountain that water is alive. The only way that we keep alive is with our service, our activities and everything that we’re doing. We enter into these 10 days asking: Ya Rabbi grant us to drink from the fountains of reality, to the waters of reality. That to make our characters to be noble characters, good characters, disciplined characters. That, truly the people of faith in action.
That, let my faith shine upon myself and my entire being through my deeds and through my actions. Through my charitable deeds and my actions, my character. My service in spreading the word, spreading the knowledges, spreading these realities, spreading the teachings. Every type of service that people are inspired to perform.
Make Your Hijrah Every Year
We pray that Allah (AJ) grant us the reality of a hijrah. That grant us it is not a sit back and describe what Prophet ﷺ did. But what Prophet ﷺ wants for us is: make your hijrah. If you’re new to this, make your hijrah. If you’ve done this for 20 years, make a greater hijrah. Again, this pilgrimage is eternal. That every time you begin there is an ending, every ending has a completely new eternal beginning and eternal cycle.
We pray that Allah (AJ) grant us the good deeds and good actions that make Him to be pleased with us. When Allah (AJ) is pleased with the servant, He draws them near to the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. His Holy Companions (as), his Holy Family and awliyaullah fis samayi wa fil ard (saints in the heavens and on earth). To be under their nazar (gaze), their blessings and their prayers. That draws close to that reality, to be dressed from that reality.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
