Allah (AJ) Wants to be Known Through Prophet ﷺ
Alhamdulillahi in this blessed month of Dhul Qi’dah and the reality of the Divinely mirror in which Allah (AJ) wanting to be known. He is known through the mirror of all realities, the mirror of all truth, is reflecting towards the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Allah (AJ) can never be found and Allah (AJ) can never be approached and Allah (AJ) will only be known through the mirror. That’s why – ‘I’m a Hidden treasure wanting to be known,’ and the state of ‘wanting’ but never really to be known.
Qala Rasulallahi ﷺ, Qala Allah (AJ): “Kuntu kanzan makhfiyya, fa ahbabtu an a’rafa, fa khalaqtu khalqan, fa ‘arraftahum bi fa ‘arafonee.”
[Hadith al Qudsi – Behar al Anwar, Al ‘Alama al Majlisi, Juz’ 84, Safha 199]
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, that Allah (AJ) said: “I was a hidden Treasure then I desired to be known, so I created a creation to which I made Myself known; then they knew Me.”
[Holy Hadith – Bihar al Anwar, by Al ‘Alama al Majlisi, Volume 84, Page 199]
It means that not allowing creation to enter into that reality to claim that they know Allah (AJ). But what they will be granted will be the signs of Allah (AJ) – to know about and towards the understanding of Allah (AJ). That is the immensity of the reality of the Divinely Presence wanting to be known. The whole state of wanting to be known then is the answer for the seeker. That Allah (AJ) wants to be known – what is it that we’re doing to get to know Allah (AJ)? Those whom think they’re approaching directly then that’s a big difficulty and impossibility. That they approach thinking they’re going to get to know Allah (AJ) directly by Allah (AJ). That, that reality can never be achieved to the perfection in which Allah (AJ) wants.
Khuluqal ‘Azheem: Allah (AJ) Praising Himself Through His Beloved ﷺ
When Allah (AJ) is stating that, ‘I want to be known’ then the whole purpose of the Muhammadan creation is to make Allah (AJ) to be known by these signs and realities. That is the greatness of the Muhammadan reflection and Muhammadan reality. That Allah (AJ) is dressing the names and attributes and all these realities and perfections upon the Muhammadan ﷺ light. That beatific light is what draws our souls to that reality. So as Prophet ﷺ is the reflection of Allah (AJ) that when you approach the reality and the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ – who is reflecting to you? It is Allah (AJ). That’s why Allah (AJ) praises Allah (AJ) by Allah’s (AJ) words when Allah (AJ) is describing: “Khuluqal ‘azheem.”
68:4 – “Wa innaka la’ala khuluqin ‘azheem.” (Surat Al-Qalam)
“Truly, You (O Muhammad!) are of a magnificent character.” (The Pen, 68:4)
Prophet ﷺ as the Perfect Mirror of Allah (AJ) – ‘AbdAllah’
That Allah (AJ) is looking to the mirror and saying, ‘You are of a magnificent character.’ When we understand the immensity of the reality of the servant – ‘AbdAllah. When Allah (AJ) granted the name, He said: ‘The greatest joy for me when Allah (AJ) called me ‘AbdAllah.’ That has an immense reality towards the greatest Name of Allah (AJ). When Allah (AJ) allows something to be attached to His Name that’s a state of that mirror – ‘AbdAllah. That, that state of the ‘Abd that is attaching to the name of Allah (AJ) for Allah (AJ) to show its immensity. That, that ‘Abd is created as a perfect mirror – as a perfectly cleansed reality. So perfectly clean that nothing comes close to its purity and that’s why it is a Haq (truth). That aynah (mirror) is Hayyul Qayyum (The Ever-Living and Self-Sustaining).
That aynah, one other way of saying is, the soul but it is so pure it is from Allah’s (AJ) immense oceans of purity. As a result Allah (AJ) whenever He looks into that mirror, He is pleased with His Own reflection that is reflecting back. That’s why then those ayatul kareem (Generous verses of Holy Qur’an) when Allah (AJ), “Khuluqal ‘azheem” – ‘You are of a magnificent – ‘azheem from ‘Azimah (Magnificence) of your character is immense, immense is your character.’ It means that this is Allah’s (AJ) praising upon Allah’s (AJ) reality. Because the mirror is something non-existent – it’s not as an identity. The ‘Abd is the servant of that reality so then the mirror is merely just reflecting Allah (AJ) back. So that in its purest state the mirror loses its identity.
From Identity to Annihilation: The Way of Perfect Reflection
That’s why the turuqs (spiritual paths) are teaching us: ‘Lose your identity.’ Because as long as you have an identity so you stand in the presence of the shaykh, you’re not reflecting the shaykh. You’re reflecting yourself. This path is about losing the identity. So that it is just a mirror in which it is polished and polished and polished and all that people can see is the reflection that is coming through you, not you. That’s the danger of dunya (material world). It is when the mirror, is you look to a mirror and you don’t see a mirror but you see the identity of that person. That’s where it becomes something that is of a lesser degree and lesser understanding.
So what is the threshold of what Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ has sent for us was the perfect servanthood. That the ‘I-ness’ the ‘he-ness’ – the identity of Prophet’s ﷺ individuality is like a transparent invisible mirror. All that we love about the reality of Prophet ﷺ is the reflection of Allah (AJ). That’s why they describe: ‘He is walking Qur’an.’
“.قَالَتْ السَّيِّدَةُ عَائِشَةَ عَلّيِهِ السّلاَمْ:” كَانَ قُرْأنًا يَمْشِي عَلَى الأَرْضِ
Qalat as Sayyidatu ‘Ayishata (as): ‘Kana Quranan yamshi ‘ala al ard.”
The beloved lady ‘Ayisha (wife of prophet Muhammad ﷺ) said: “He (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) was a walking Qur’an on earth.”
Belief of Holy Companions: Through Prophet ﷺ We Knew Allah (AJ)
For us to understand the Holy Sahabi (Holy Companions of Prophet ﷺ) were describing: ‘What we know from Allah (AJ)? We don’t know anything from Allah (AJ). But what was reflected through the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, we know Allah (AJ). Because when we looked at Prophet ﷺ at that time in the middle of the desert…’ What was their understanding of rahmah and mercy. You know the bedouin desert is a very difficult life and very harsh characteristics. So the concept of rahmah and mercy, and these Names and Attributes of Allah (AJ) was not well known to the people but they understood that when Prophet ﷺ… ‘If we want to know rahmah (mercy), we looked at Prophet ﷺ. His character, how he judged people, how he brought the decrees and the laws of Allah (AJ) with such an immense love and passion and compassion. By knowing Prophet ﷺ we understood and we knew Allah (AJ). If this is rahmah that we see through Prophet ﷺ then we understood the rahmah of Allah (AJ).’
The Divine Dressing the Senses of the Servant
Because that was the reality of the aynah – the purpose of the mirror was to reflect his Lord. So the Prophets (as) were the mirrors of Allah (AJ) until the perfected prophesy. That’s why we describe that the holy hadith is a description of the mirror that, ‘When they did their fard (obligatory) and then they came towards their voluntary worshipness I became the eyes in which they see and their seeing. I became the hearing in which they hear, I became the breath in which they breathe.’ That is a description of the mirror.
‘An Abi Hurairah (ra) qala, Qala Rasulullahi ﷺ : InnAllaha ta’ala qala: “ …, wa la yazaalu ‘Abdi yataqarrabu ilayya bin nawafile hatta ahebahu, fa idha ahbabtuhu kunta Sam’ahul ladhi yasma’u behi, wa Basarahul ladhi yubsiru behi, wa Yadahul lati yabTeshu beha, wa Rejlahul lati yamshi beha, wa la in sa alani la a’Teyannahu, …”
[Hadith Qudsi, Sahih al Bukhari, Raqam: 6502)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) that: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that: Allah the Almighty said: “…My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him…” [Holy Hadith, Authentic by al-Bukhari, # 6502]
Reflections of Haq – Hayyul Qayyum (Ever-Living & Self-Sustained)
When Allah (AJ) is giving a Hadith al Qudsi (Holy Hadith) is describing: ‘This mirror, they are so polished that they reflect My reality. When I look to them, I reflect out.’ So when you come to the presence of the Prophet (as) is as if you have been in the presence of Allah (AJ). Prophet ﷺ described to his companions: ‘If you see me, you have seen Allah (AJ) because Allah (AJ) is seeing through my eyes, is hearing through my ears, is speaking through my breath.’ That holy hadith is the description of the reality of the mirror and the understanding of the mirroring. So when we want to reach to Allah (AJ) that’s the adab (manners) – is then face the mirror. That is the highest level of respect and understanding for how can you find Allah (AJ)? You’re giving Allah (AJ) a location, a place, a space?
So the highest level of tawheed (oneness) and understanding was that we are all searching for the reality of Allah (AJ). He inspires within our heart – ‘Then look to My mirror. Look to that one whom I created to be known and through that perfect reflection all creation is reflecting out.’ We said the truth which is Hayyul Qayyum – it is ever living and it is self-sustained by Allah (AJ). So when Arabic when we say Haq it stands for ‘Hay (The Ever-Living)’ – for the eternal oceans of reality and ‘Qayyum (The Self-Sustained)’ that the truth is only sustained by the Divinely Presence. There is no human, no jinn (unseen being), no creation that can sustain and power the truth.
The Mirror of Haq: Reflecting the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
The truth is something from the Divinely Presence. So that haq is then that mirror in which Allah (AJ) reflects, all of creation is reflecting through that mirror of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. When we understand that reality and really contemplate about that reality then we understand the depth of what Allah (AJ) has given to us – is the tariqah (spiritual path). So imagine the one who has no tariqah, no understanding – they face just an emptiness. No matter what they practice, what they do, what they’re trying to achieve it is nothing in comparison to the one whom their wujud (existence) is pointing towards the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. It is something that can’t be understood.
Those Without a Tariqah vs. Those Oriented Towards the Prophet ﷺ
So you imagine two people – one whom doesn’t believe and understand and Allah (AJ) didn’t grant them this understanding. It is like they are facing just a closet with their practices. With whatever benefit their practices have and whatever goodness they were able to achieve with their own hands and feet and ‘ibadah (worship) – this is what they’ll be dressed with. Versus the one whom Allah (AJ) inspired on the path in which Allah (AJ) wants to be known and inspired you to come onto this path to get to know Me. Then they teach you that your entire wujud – your entire presence is always facing Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Make your zikr (Divine remembrance), make your salawats (praises upon Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ). Perfect your character, take away all these badnesses, take away anger. Take away all these things and then scrub. Every time the scrubbing comes – this reflection of Prophet ﷺ is dressing the soul. Imagine with what dresses it is dressing. When Prophet ﷺ is teaching you that, ‘Make one praising upon me, Allah (AJ) will send my soul to make ten praisings upon you.’
Qala Rasulullah ﷺ: “Man Salla `alaiya Salatan wahidatan, Sallallahu `alayhi `ashra Salawatin, wa Huttat `anhu `ashru khaTeatin, wa ruf`at lahu `ashru darajatin.”
Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “Whoever sends blessings [Praises] upon me, God will shower His blessings upon him ten times, and will erase ten of his sins, and elevate [raise] his [spiritual] station ten times.” [Hadith recorded by Nasa’i]
Becoming the Ambassador of Prophetic Light
That mirror now it is praising ten times in its oceans of eternity that there is no beginning and there is no end. What praisings, what lights, what blessings are dressing upon the soul! That’s why all these na’ats (Prophetic praising) and especially the Urdu ones they describe – ‘I don’t know how I achieved this.’ Outside people can see because outside people come across me and they say, ‘Oh you have so much light, you have so many blessings. There is something about you we don’t understand.’ But the servant themself they know they didn’t do anything. What they did was to face that reality that the shaykhs taught them, they did the zikrs the shaykhs taught them. As a result, that Sultan (King) and that beatific light of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is reflecting upon their soul and all of creation is mesmerized by the lights that are just reflecting upon your soul. That you become an ambassador of that light and that reality.
Awliya (Saints) Spend Their Life to Gain the Nazar (Gaze) of Prophet ﷺ
So then imagine when awliya understood that they rushed to purify themselves, to sanctify themselves, to busy themselves to get the attention of that mirror. Our life is for that mirror to gaze at us. The only time that Prophet ﷺ gazes at us is by good character, good deeds and good actions. That’s why they do what they do. They figure out: we have to have a majlis (association) – we have a majlis. We have to do the food – we have to give food. We have to have good character – we do good character. We have to have our zikr, our salawat. We have to put out the knowledges, we have to do all of these things that they’re inspired to do and to ask people to join their caravan. This is a caravan that is busy propagating and doing. It is not a caravan that they say, ‘Come join us because our van is parked in the parking lot. We neither do anything, we propagate nothing, we say nothing, we don’t even spread a paper on the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.’ That’s like somebody saying, ‘Come join me I’m parking my car in the parking lot and you can sit with me in the parking lot.’ That is not the caravan of realities.
The caravan of realities is the shaykh you can see the mission that they have is to propagate this love to get the nazar of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. They tell people, ‘Come on board with us, come on with us and participate. Everything that we do you’ll be participating in that and all of that is based on so that Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ will be looking at them, gazing at them. Praying for them, granting his rida (satisfaction). He says, ‘I see the ‘amal (deeds) of my nation. If it is good I thank Allah (AJ).’ Every hadith has these realities, ‘…And if I look at them and it is bad, I ask Allah’s (AJ) forgiveness.’
Qala Rasulullahi ﷺ “… Tu’radu `alayya `amalukum, fa in ra`itu khayran hamidtu Allah, wa in ra`aytu ghayra dhalik astaghfartullaha lakum.”
The Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “… I observe the deeds of my ummah/Nation. If I find good [in it] I thank/praise Allah, and if I see bad, I ask forgiveness for them/on their behalf.”
Faiz (Downpouring Emanation) and Intercession: The Miracle of the Turuq
So it means that they’re in a state in which they’re continuously asking Prophet ﷺ to be happy with all their ‘amals that they’re doing and that Prophet ﷺ is interceding by thanking Allah (AJ). Imagine that when Prophet ﷺ is saying, ‘Alhamdulillah Ya Rabbi that their ‘amal was good.’ That look what at they did, look what they’re doing, look how their actions are. Then Prophet ﷺ is saying: ‘Alhamdulillah’ to Allah (AJ).
This is the whole miracle of the turuqs and why the shaykhs the barakah (blessing) that flows through them is so immense because of these realities that they’ve been taught. They understood how to achieve these realities, these blessings, these nazar and all of the faiz that coming from this Divinely Presence and Divinely oceans, inshaAllah. We pray that Allah (AJ) give us more and more himmah (zeal), and more and more ability to do good, to do and spread the word. To spread the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That to always be under the nazar and the gaze and the rida and satisfaction of the Divinely Presence and the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and awliyaullah fis samayi wa fil ard (in heavens and on earth), inshaAllah.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
