Reality of Binary Code in Shawwal and Sickness of Gheebah (Backbiting)
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi
A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashraful Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
“A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Atiullah atiur Rasul wa Ulil amre minkum.”
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat An-Nisa)
“… Obey Allah, Obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
Awliya are Aware of Their Heavenly Audience
And a reminder always for myself, ana abdukal ‘ajeezu, dayeefu, miskinu, wa zhalim, wa jahl, and by the grace of Allah (AJ), rahmah and mercy be upon us. That nobody can be anything and anyone have the slightest love for Allah (AJ), love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, they understood that. Not the audience that’s sitting in front of them, but whom they’re sitting in front of is what make them to be shy. They don’t need to be reminded by people to be humble.
They are not blind. When your heart is not blind, it’s not the audience of ten, twenty people you sit in front that you be nothing to, but it’s the audience that Allah (AJ) is presenting you to. That in their presence – impossible to think you’re anything. So, sometimes cuckoo people say, ‘Oh, be nothing. Be nothing. Remember to be nothing.’ If your heart is open, you already know you’re nothing because whom you sitting in front of is everything. But if your heart is blind and you think you’re going to be something for twenty people, you’re not going to progress in anything.
Sifat Al-Muntaqim Destroys Our Bad Characteristics in Ramadan
A reminder for myself in this month of Shawwal that we passed because we have to continuously remind ourselves. We don’t know at what time, third time, fourth time, fifth year, tenth year, it will trigger something into the heart to understand. This month of Shawwal, we finish the holy month of Ramadan, and Ramadan is nine and is the sultan (king) of power. That in that sultan of power, Allah (AJ) want to efface the nation, ‘Be nothing. With the barakah (blessing) of Ramadan, all that you have manifested in eight months, I’m going to crush you to be nothing just from the barakah of siyam (fasting).’
As soon as they fast, Allah (AJ), Al-Muntaqim (The Avenger). The sifat (attribute) of Allah (AJ) in that month, every month is numbered and every reality in those numbers begin to open. This sifat al-Muntaqim (attribute of The Avenger), it destroys all bad characteristic.
Even the Donkey of a Saint is Holy in Heaven
Allah (AJ) wipe away every manifestation that Allah (AJ) not pleased with. And those whom journeying with awliyaullah (saints) – not that they’re anything – the donkey of a wali (saint) is holy in heaven. How much Allah (AJ) love His awliya. They don’t have to claim to be anything, just the donkey of the wali is holy in heaven.
Here they look for the donkey of Sayyidina Isa (as) and they said, ‘If we could find the foot of that donkey, we would have put it upon our head,’ of their tashrif (honour) and their love these people have for Sayyidina Isa (as). The love for Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, and awliyaullah who represent the light of Prophet ﷺ upon this Earth, even their donkeys are holy. And you can get a tabarak (blessing) from even their donkey.
Shawwal is the Secret of Binary Code – 1 and 0
And they remind us that, in that tenth month of Shawwal, is the reality of the binary code. When Allah (AJ) want you to be nothing, it’s a path and a journey towards this hijrah (migration). Because the 12th month is the Hajj (pilgrimage), and everybody is making the Hajj, not only the physical Hajj that you buy. The spiritual Hajj in which Allah (AJ) is that, ‘I’ve attached you to these awliya. I attached you to the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Your journey is even more precise and I efface you in Ramadan. And I make you to be nothing in Ramadan, and make your soul to be pure and purified.’
And then Prophet ﷺ teaching, externally, internally, Shawwal is the secret of ten. Ten because you just came out of the nine which makes you to be a nothing. In Arabic, the nothing is a nuqt. The ten is a one with a nuqt, with a dot. They want to take us on this journey to the Lord of Power, to the Divinely Presence. That, ‘You’re a dot and we’re going to move you into the Divinely Presence of the One.’
There Will Be War in Six Days of Shawwal
And Prophet ﷺ taught that in the qiyamah (resurrection), and the arrival of qiyamah, there would be a war in six days of Shawwal. That there would be a battle and the drumming of war would begin in Ramadan and the battle would break out in Shawwal.
‘An Ibn Mas’ud (ra), ‘anin Nabi ﷺ qala: “Iza kanat sayhaton fi Ramadana fa innahu yakuno ma’ma’aton fi Shawwalin.” [Na’yeem Ibn Hammad, Makhtutah Al Fetan, 626.]
Narrated Ibn Massud (ra), the Prophet (pbuh) said,” A loud sound and the drumming of war will be heard in Ramadan, then the war will break in Shawwal…” [Source: Naeem Ibn Hamad, Makhtotat AlFetan, 626.]
Now from malakut (heavenly realm), there’s no time. So Ramadan, there’s always a battle. The drums are beating, ‘Itqun Minan Naar (Freedom from Fire) – the last ten days, of course the drums are beating.
‘An Salman al Farsi (ra), an Rasulullahi ﷺ qala, “Shahru Ramadana awwalahu rahmatun, wa awsatuhu maghfiratun, wa akhiruhu ‘itqun minan naar.” [Al Imam al Albani, Meshkat al Masabih, Kitab 7, Hadith 9]
Narrated by Salman al Farsi (ra), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The first (ten days) of the month of Ramadan is mercy, the middle (ten days) is forgiveness, and the last (ten days) is salvation/freedom from the fire.” [Source: Al Imam al Albani, Meshkat al Masabih – 1965, Book 7, Hadith 9]
Difficulties Come in Shawwal for Us to Reach Towards Our Reality
That Allah (AJ) say, ‘I want to faraj (relief), I want to save you from jahannam (hellfire). How I’m going to save you is I’m going to make you to be nothing, and you’re going to reach towards your armageddon. You’re going to reach towards your reality. You’re going to reach to the reality of witnessing your grave, witnessing all that you worshipped is going to be brought down in front of you. All that you’ve made of yourself is going to be destroyed and I make things to begin to make war against you.’
It means difficulty comes, hardship comes because you just achieved a great accomplishment for Ramadan. Allah (AJ) want to continue that accomplishment and as soon as Shawwal begins, the difficulty and attacks begin.
We Are Always in a Spiritual Armageddon
And it shows for us how Allah (AJ) – wa Daayim – is eternal. ‘I have no time.’ We’re not waiting for an armageddon on a field in which everybody dies. There’s an armageddon at every moment in your spiritual reality, in our spiritual reality. That Allah (AJ) said, ‘Everything has to be brought down. Everything within you that is beginning to manifest itself, its desires, its wants. Your shekl, your form.’
This world makes you like a Buddha, and love you, respect you, think of you something. Allah (AJ) say, ‘I’m going to crush all of that’ and each person begins to have their own armageddon. Everything begin to collapse. Every type of difficulty comes. Every type of attack comes.
Allah (AJ) is the Director of This Play – Don’t Be Angry
And those characters, when they teach that, a part of that teaching is so that – don’t be angry. Don’t be angry at what’s coming to you in this play. It’s like a movie, like a play. The scene just opened. Allah (AJ) want to bring the servant to be humble, to be nothing. Say, ‘Don’t be disturbed by the actors in this play because the director is Allah (AJ).’
‘I can bring other actors in the play, doesn’t matter. You don’t like these two, I bring you three worse ones.’ Say, ‘No, no, ya Rabbi, these two they’re good enough for me, because next one may come with a big dhush [slap sound effect].” Alhamdulillah wa shukrulillah.
Based on that, based on the ilm and the knowledge, it’s how to achieve this muridin (devoted disciples) that we talked last night. We talked last night, and as a reminder that the ones who want to come into tariqah (spiritual path), they think everything’s about aggression and being aggressive, and fighting on behalf of the shaykh, and no, no. The shaykh is showing you, ‘No, no. You’re of the worst character, the lowest of character, the backbiter, the gheebah, the one who slanders.’
Backbiting is Equivalent to Eating Your Brother’s Flesh
And Prophet ﷺ teaching so eloquent, that if you convey something bad about someone and it’s true, you have backbitten them. You’ve eaten their flesh.
‘An ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (ra) qala: Kunna jolusan ‘inda anNabiyi ﷺ, faqama rajolon, fawqa’a fihi rajolon min ba’dihi. Faqala anNabiyo ﷺ: “takhallal”.
Qala ﷺ: “innaka akalta lahma akhika.” [Al Tabarani, al Mu’jam al Kabir, 9951]
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (ra) reported: We were sitting with the Prophet (pbuh) when a man stood to leave, then another man spoke badly about him after he left. The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Pick your teeth.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, why should I pick my teeth when I have not eaten meat?” The Prophet (pbuh) said, “You have eaten the flesh of your brother.” [Source: AlTabarani, al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 9951]
Said, ‘If it’s true, ya Sayyidi ya Rasulul Kareem (the Most Generous Prophet), I went around and told people, the horribleness of that person.’ Said, ‘If it’s true, you’ve backbitten them. You’ve eaten their flesh. And you’re in big trouble with Allah (AJ). And if it’s not true, you’ve slandered them. You’ve destroyed their character.’ Here they have a lawsuit. What do they call? ‘Slandering lawsuit.’ That, you destroyed my character, my sustenance, everything. That sin is not forgivable.
‘An Abi Hurraira (ra), anna Rasulallah ﷺ qala : “ Atadroona mal ghibah ? Qalu : “ Allaho wa Rasulohu a’lamo. Qala ﷺ: “ Zikroka akhaka bema yakrahu.” Qila: Afra ayta in kana fi akhi ma aqolu. Qala ﷺ: “In kana fihi ma taqulo faqad aghtabtahu, wa in lam yakon fihi, faqad bahatta.” [Sahih Muslim 2589]
Abu Huraira (ra) reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do you know what backbiting is?” They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet (pbuh) said, “To mention your brother in a way he dislikes.” It was said, “What do you think if what I said about him is true?” The Prophet (pbuh) said, “If what you say about him is true, it is backbiting. If it is not true, it is slander.” [Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2589]
Backbiting is Not Forgiven Until Forgiven by its Victim
There’s no shaykh who can tell you, ‘I will forgive you. Go and backbite somebody.’ Because he’s not above Prophet ﷺ. There’s no one who can imagine themselves above Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. When Prophet ﷺ brings a shari’ah, a law, you say, ‘It’s fine now.’ You don’t go above that. So Prophet ﷺ said, ‘No there’s nobody who can forgive you, until the one that you slandered and you backbitten has to forgive you.’ Nobody can intercede for you at that time.
‘An Abi Zarrin (ra), ‘anin Nabi (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa aalihi) fi wasiyatin lahu, qala: “Ya Aba Zarr, iyaka wal ghibata, finnal ghibata ashaddu minaz zina.” Qulto: Wa lema zaka ya Rasulallahi ﷺ? Qala ﷺ: “Le annar rajola yazni fayatubo ilAllahi fayatubollahu ‘alayhi. Wal ghibato la toghfaru hatta yaghfira haa sahiboha.” [Alhur al ‘Amili, Wasayili ash Shi’ah, Juz’ 8, Hadith raqam 18312]
The Prophet ﷺ once gave counsel to Abu Dharr (r), saying: “O Abu Dharr! Beware of backbiting, for backbiting is graver than adultery (zina’).” Abu Dharr (ra) said: “Why is that so, O Messenger of Allah?” He (pbuh) replied: “That is because when a man commits adultery and then repents to God, God accepts his repentance. However, backbiting is not forgiven until forgiven by its victim.” [Al-Hurr al-‘Amili, Wasai’l al-Shi’ah, Vol. 8, Hadith No. 18312]
Every other sin you can say, “Ya Rabbi, I made a big boo-boo, forgive me. I stole something. I did something wrong.’ Allah (AJ) says ‘Al-Ghaforur Raheem. InshaAllah, I’ll forgive you.’ Backbiting? How Allah (AJ) going to forgive you when Allah (AJ) wasn’t damaged. It’s the best, it’s the most supreme court on this universe. Say, ‘I wasn’t hurt. Your shaykh wasn’t hurt. That person was hurt. I cannot and I will not forgive you until you seek that person’s forgiveness. If they forgive you, if they don’t forgive, and they want to their hisaab (account), God forgive you and protect you from what’s coming.’
Backbiting Extinguishes Your Light and Good Deeds
Backbiting is the only thing that can take all your hasanat (goodness). Because we said before, darkness and sin is like a black, blacked-out room. Dark. One good action is like a candle and it illuminates the darkness. And when Allah (AJ) grant you a hasanat and goodness, nothing can take it away.
That light can never be extinguished, except Prophet ﷺ brought again, that’s why you say – there’s no shaykh who can go above the rule of Prophet ﷺ and tell his students, ‘No. Go backbite. Go spy. Go slander. Go do like this.’ No, that person has become corrupted if they give those types of orders. The respect for Prophet’s ﷺ laws. And what Prophet ﷺ warned? As soon as you backbite, you’re pulling all your good deeds and extinguishing your light.
‘An Abi Hurraira (ra), an AnNabi ﷺ qala: “Man kanat ‘indahu mazlematon le akhihi, min ‘irdihi aw min shayin, fal yatahallalhu minhu alyawma qabla an la yakuno dinaron wa la derhamon. In kana lahu ‘amalon salihon akheza minhu be qadri mazlematihi, wa in lam yakon lahu hasanatun akheza min sayyiati sahebihi fahomila ‘alayh.” [AlBukhari, Riyadhus Salihin 210]
Narrated Abu Hurairah (ra), that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “Whoever has wronged his brother, in the way of property or honor, let him go to him and repair it, before it is taken [from him on a day] when he has no dirhams or dinars, such that if he has any good deeds, some of the good deeds will be taken and given to [the wronged one], otherwise [if he has no good deeds], some of the other’s evil deeds will be taken and cast upon him.” [AlBukhari, Riyad as-Salihin 210]
Shaitan Bankrupts People of Their Good Deeds Through Backbiting
And why shaitan (satan) encourages a person to backbite and slander someone? To bankrupt them. He’s a bankruptcy expert. When he sees the person is doing good deeds, good actions, he’s becoming wealthy in the presence of Allah (AJ) of hasanat and good deeds, ‘How can I pull their deeds?’ [says shaitan]. You can’t, except ghibah (backbiting).
Soon as they begin to talk bad, their account is being emptied and transferred to the person that they’re talking bad against. So as if that pious person is pulling all the hasanat of your actions, leaving it to be bankrupt. And if that one is carrying the burdens that Allah (AJ) wants them to carry, it means now the sayyiat (sins) and the burdens will be shifted onto that person who backbit. Very dangerous. Unimaginably dangerous.
Prophet ﷺ Warned Us About the Sickness of Ghibah
And if pious people go around them, eat from them, they’ll vomit because this the hadith when the Sahabi (Holy Companions of Prophet ﷺ)… as soon as Prophet ﷺ spoke of that reality, the Sahabi who were talking, they were in a corner and vomiting flesh, and vomiting flesh. Say, ‘What happened?’ Say ‘This is the flesh of your brother that you’re eating.’
He actually gave them to see that meat was coming raw out of their mouth and they were vomiting. You go somewhere and you vomit from the food, it was filled with ghibah, and Prophet ﷺ for his pious servants want them to know, ‘When I talk, it’s true. I’m not talking a philosophy class. I’m talking, it’s 100%.’ Like you know your hand, your being. It’s 100% true. You will become sick, and that was a warning. If that make you sick, just keeping in their company, all your light will be taken away. Anything that you worked on in life, you will be pulled… and that’s all that shaitan wants. By that, they understood these things will bankrupt us.
There Are Many Muhibbin, But Very Few Muridin
These bad characteristics will destroy us, and that’s why the shaykh wanted to show. That, ‘Go. Don’t think your bad character, that you achieved anything. I want you to meet three of my real students’ because we said muridin, they’re a few. Muhibbin (lovers of the way) could be millions if the shaykh is powerful. He’s everywhere. There could be millions of lovers. But real, and real followers, maybe two or three.
And that’s whom he wanted to show. ‘Go look. Go look at one of my real people. How much you abuse them and they won’t attack you back. How much you come against them, they won’t attack you back and to know that Prophet ﷺ what he’s giving. That one whom you attack, he’s pulling all your good deeds. And any type of garbage that they have they’re permitted now to throw that garbage upon that person.’
Our Shaykhs Carry Unimaginable Burdens
One time we asked Mawlana Shaykh (Q), ‘Sayyidi, just get an idea. You’re, mashallah…’ he always was in difficulty. Always in a… difficult energy would come onto Mawlana Shaykh (Q). Said, ‘Sayyidi, can I just one time carry something?’ It was the beginning of my tariqah (spiritual path). I don’t know what it was – a few days later I was like dead on the couch where we were living in Beverly Hills in the condo and I was dead on the couch. And I felt like somebody shot me in the head and she, my wife, called immediately, ‘Mawlana, he look like he’s dead, and something’s wrong. Like his head has been…he says he can’t move his head. He was feeling very sick.’
Mawlana (Q) got on the phone, said, ‘What’s wrong?’ Said, ‘I don’t know, Sayyidi, I just asked if I could carry just a little bit and try to carry a burden for you.’ He said, ‘Are you crazy? Make a du’a (supplication) like that?’ Because we have no imagination, we have no understanding what they’re carrying of difficulty, of what Allah (AJ) put upon them of burdens and how they have to carry those burdens.
Shawwal Brings Hardship to Move You Towards Divinely Presence
We pray that Allah (AJ) gives us an understanding that these are the months in which Allah (AJ) want to make us to be nothing. ‘Come back to the Shawwal. That I’m going to crush you. There’s going to be war declared against you. It means every type of hardship will visit you. Be patient. Keep your zikr (Divine remembrance). You’re being moved into Divinely Presence,’ until the 11th month can open. And what Allah (AJ) dress of binary code means, ‘I begin to send an energy upon you, and you begin to be a reflection of The One.’ “Allahu Ahad,” and the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, al-Wahid (The Unique One).
The loving reflection of Allah’s (AJ) essence of Ahad (The One and Only). That there’s no sharik (partner). There’s no likeness onto the reality of that Ahad, but it reflects its love to the wahid, to the oneness of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. When they take us into the presence of that 11, it means that once you became nothing, we dressed you with nothing. We’re going to bring you back to life, into the presence of That One.
Don’t Complain, Be Patient Through the Testing
We pray that Allah (AJ) give us a life to see those days, to be dressed by that One, to be patient through testing, and everyone has testing in their life. Everyone has arguments in their homes. Everyone has a complaint against their wife or their husband or their children. This all the same category. All the same. Any type of complaint you have against your husband, Allah’s (AJ) crushing you. You have a complaint against your wife, Allah (AJ) crushing you. Your children have a complaint against you, your parents, too bad for them [Shaykh laughs]. But that doesn’t count because my kids here today.
But if you have a complaint against your children, then be patient. All of our life, Allah (AJ) is trying to dress us and take us to a goal, take us to a destiny. We pray that we can see the 11th month, and be dressed by that mirror, dressed by that reflection and then the holy month of Dhul Hajj in which Allah (AJ) grant us in those ten days to say, “Labbaik, Allahumma labbaik.“
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik”
“I am here at Your service, O Allah, I am here at Your service.”
That we came, ya Rabbi, with all our raggedy and riggidy, and all our good and bad, but we’re here, ya Rabbi. Dress us from Your lights and your blessings, inshaAllah.’
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
