Imam Hussain (as) is Our Hero with an Exemplary Character
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi.
A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Sayyid ush Shuhada – The Master of Those who has Spiritual Vision
Imam Hussain (as) is a reminder in our lives. For people who are coming and maybe heard or not heard that these are big awliyaullah (saints). They are the descendants of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That when you put everything into its place, we begin to understand the greatness of the sacrifice that all the companions made, all the Ahlul Bayt made. But specific to Imam Hussain (as), he is a big wali (saint), big awliyaullah, Sayyid ush Shuhada (the master of those who witness). Means nobody can reach to be shuhood (witnessing with spiritual vision) with an open heart without Imam Hussain (as) signing their certificate. You can become shaheed (martyr) in dunya by sacrifice or be shaheed by all the bad characteristics that leave and Allah (AJ) makes you to be from Ahlul Baseerah; you see what people don’t see, you hear what people don’t hear, you feel and taste what people don’t feel and taste. These are all the gifts of Allah (AJ).
Imam Hussain (as) Knew What Was Coming and Accepted Allah’s Will
So, when a big, big awliyaulalh like that, receives an amr e jabbar, Allah’s (AJ) amr (command) from siffat al Jabbar (attribute of the Compeller), means it is impossible to carry. He is Ayatus Sabr (the sign of Patience) alayhis salatu was salaam. That is for us to understand that “when Allah (AJ) gave me an amr from His Jabaroot, there was no way for me to say “No” to what Allah (AJ) wants.” No companion, no wife, no child could understand. siffat al Jabbar, when Allah (AJ) says, “It is going to be like this,” that maqaam (station) of Sayyidina Hussain (as), “Samina wa ata’naa” (I hear and I obey). I am going to listen to what Allah (AJ) has ordered for me and I am going to be the sign of Siffat as Sabr.” He is a sign for us in our life of having sabr with what Allah (AJ) has destined for you. He gives even all the conditions of warfare beyond imagination.
(Surat Al-Baqarah)
“…We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.” (The Cow, 2:285)
Whoever thinks they are copying him (as), whoever thinks they are following Him (as), do they have these attributes? He saw for sure his death, he saw for sure his annihilation, and he agreed to step into that fire (as). And he took his women and children with him, which was unseen, unheard of. The companions said, “Leave the family behind.” “No, I am going to go in with my family, it is written by Allah (AJ) that I must do that.”
Imam Hussain (as) Inherited the Magnificat Character of the Prophet ﷺ
They do a lot of screaming, crying and a lot of emotional events but awliyaullah want, my shaykh wants a reminder from myself to go into the specifics of the character. That to see an amazing oppression is going to be put onto you. So anytime anyone wants to fight, anyone wants to exhibit a bad characteristic, then remember their lives. He said, “I didn’t see what Allah sent me, and I planned to attack them from behind. Allah (AJ) showed me the field in which the people who I came to. They called me and they denied me and they shut their door to me and they didn’t support me. I saw all that and I didn’t curse them.” So means there was no cursing, no la’nat. “I saw the enemies that were going to mount their attack against me and I didn’t plan and ask from the Sahabi Kiram (Honourable Companions of Prophet ﷺ) that: mount an army and let’s destroy them, before they destroy me.” Means he exhibits khuluq ul azheem. Imam Hussain (as) exhibits the characteristics of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
68:4 – “Wa innaka la’ala khuluqin ‘azheem.” (Surat Al-Qalam)
“Truly, You (O Muhammad!) are of a magnificent character.” (The Pen, 68:4)
How to know Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is great? It is that Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ saw all of that and he ﷺ never cursed his companions. He never cursed anyone that, “O your grandchildren is going to destroy my family. Your grandchildren are going to kill my grandchildren,”. Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ never said anything, knowing destruction, knowing someone is going to hurt you, nobody has that characteristic. If you think somebody stole five dollars from you, you are going to make a curse upon them. This is the character of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and his beloved grandchildren.
[Imam Hussain (as) says] I saw my death and I walked into it, whatever Allah (AJ) wants I am submitting. I am going to be the sign of sabr and patience in life and I am going to be the sign of the best of characteristics. That I didn’t mount an attack, I didn’t sneak up on somebody and I didn’t kill them in secret. That whatever Allah (AJ) wants. If Allah (AJ) wants me to be slaughtered, I am going to be slaughtered. If Allah (AJ) wants my children in that boat, my wife in that boat, and my aunts and my relatives in that boat, tasleem and submission. He’s showing the good characteristics.
Our Inner Yazid Come against Sunnah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
Awliyaullah come into our lives and say then remember that characteristic. Every time that you get angry, and you show your anger, you are a Yazid. Worse than a Yazid, you are a Shaytan. That Imam Hussain (as) reminding for pious people, “It’s okay that you cry for me, but I got my Paradise. I am from the owners of Paradise, owners of Holy Qur’an, I am Sayyidish Shuhada. But I am crying for you. “I am crying for you that you are under the oppression of your ‘Yazid’. You are under the oppression of your own Shaytan within you. You should be fighting that Shaytan.” That you saw my battle and you saw how much I was willing to sacrifice for Allah (AJ), for the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, for Sunnah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. I sacrificed and put everything on the table. Then why do you let your bad characteristic be within you?”
That Shaytan within you is coming against Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. The Shaytan within me is coming against the Sunnah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. The Shaytan within me comes against everything and every ihtiram (respect) of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Every time somebody says, “Why do you have to stand up when you say darood shareef at the end (of zikr)?” It is simple standing, and Shaytan is blocking. Then look at the life of Imam Hussain (as), how they sacrificed? How they fought? There was no way anyone was going to come between them and the love of Prophet ﷺ.
For us, (we say) maybe I won’t have my beard because it’s not popular. Maybe I won’t wear my hat, it’s not popular, people may bug me on the train. Maybe I won’t keep my ring and maybe I won’t keep my staff. Maybe I won’t wear my turban, maybe I will drop the Sunnah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. And little by little Shaytan blocks and attacks, blocks and attacks. On these holy nights they remind us: there is no need that you hit yourself like that for me (Imam Hussain). But if you are going to hit yourself, hit for the Shaytan within you that blocks the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ in your lives. That blocks the reality of Prophet ﷺ in our lives.
We Can’t Even Sacrifice Our Bad Characteristic
A reminder for us to struggle and to fight against bad characteristic. So if they make you a little angry and you show your anger, eh your Shaytan is all over you. We can’t even sacrifice bad characteristic, much less sacrifice our body, your self. You are lying to yourself. They are showing us they fought. They fought themselves and their bad characteristics until they sacrificed even their entire body. We, if we squeeze you a little bit too much, you become angry and leave. Means the Shaytan inside the person is much stronger than the love of Rahmaan and the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Prophet ﷺ described that the faith is not complete until you love me more than you love yourself. Means for the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ they do everything.
‘An Abi Hurairah (ra), anna Rasulallahiﷺ qala: “Fawal lazi nafsi bi yadihi, la yuminu ahadukum hatta akoona ahabba ilayhi min walidihi wa waladihi.” [Sahih Al Bukhari, Kitab 2, Hadith 14]
Narrated by Abi Hurairah (ra), that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “By Him in Whose Hands is my soul, none of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father and his children.” [Authentic by Al Bukhari, Book 2, Hadith 14]
Ahul Bayt and Sahabi Gave Their Lives for the Love of Prophet ﷺ
These gatherings, these associations all of this is to show Prophet ﷺ our love and our muhabbat. We bring our children to remember the greatness of the character of Prophet ﷺ. Ashaab an Nabi (companions of Prophet ﷺ, all died. In Dhul Hajj with Sayyidina Uthman (as) and at the beginning of Muharram Sayyidina Umar (as). Means all died for the love of Prophet ﷺ for upholding their religion, not hurting anyone. Look into their lives not hurting anyone. But they accepted, they tasleem and they submitted. They exhibited by their good characteristics that until today you describe their lives.
That he (Imam Hussain (as)) didn’t slaughter anyone. He merely asked. “Let me to pass, let me to go home, I don’t want any fitna.” They said, “No, we want to slaughter you here in the middle of the desert,” astagfirullah. He exhibits and remind us the best of character. There is no need to curse anyone. There is no need to do magic on anyone. There is no need to do anything against anyone, other than fighting yourself. Fight your bad desires, (say) I am fighting my bad desires, I am coming against my bad characteristics. Don’t let the Shaytan within me to become strong and block me from the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Allah forgave Many Nations in ‘Ashura
We pray on these holy nights that Allah (AJ), this ‘Ashura and every Ash e Noora is an opening of light and tawba (repentance). Every nation was granted a tawba in Muharram. That Sayyidina Adam (as) was forgiven on Ashura, when he came to dunya. Sayyidina Nuh’s ship landed on Ashura and was forgiven. Sayyidi Ibrahim ‘Qulna ya naaru koonee bardan wa salaamun…` was saved from the oppression and fire of Nimrod on Ashura.
(Surat Al-Anbiya)
“We said, O fire, be cool and Peaceful upon Abraham.” (The Prophets, 21:69)
Sayyidina Musa (as), the oceans parted for him. Means he ran from fir’aun (Pharaoh) and Allah (AJ) granted a najjat (salvation) to Ummat (nation) Musa (as) on Ashura. And for Nabi ul Kareem, Habib ul ‘Azheem Muhammad ﷺ, Muharram is our hijrah. It’s the opening of the calendar. It’s the opening of the City of Lights in which Prophet ﷺ was granted Madinah tul Munawwarah, the City of Lights. Means he has been granted the Lights of Paradise. The owner of the Lights of Paradise is Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Only Those with Good Character Are With Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
All the companions Ashaab an-Nabi come into our lives and remind us, “Now we have been granted the City of Lights our life is to sacrifice ourselves and our bad characteristics. So that we can sit at that table with them because this is the table of good akhlaaq not just `amal.” It is good character, good akhlaq and Prophet ﷺ gives you a seat that sit at the table with me. You are not going to compete in ‘amal with them. You are not going to have any reward like their reward but only by good characteristic we will be invited to that table of Prophet ﷺ, to sit with such a holy companionship of noble and holy souls.
We pray that in this Muharram Allah (AJ) grant us the oceans of forgiveness, the oceans of light and grant us from the reality of Ashura. That Allah (aj) grant all our children and young ones to be dressed and be blessed. And to constantly fight the desire of Shaytan and choose Rahmaan. May Allah grant us from the lights of Ashura that we are nothing, we are daif, we are weak servants, but we are only coming through the door of love, love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, love of Ahlul Baytun Nabi (as), love of Ashabun Nabi (as), love of Awliyaullah.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ wa bi siri Surat al Fatiha.
