How To Stay Focused and Not Look Left or Right – Journeying with the Moon
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi.

I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat An-Nisa)
“… Obey Allah, Obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
And always a reminder for myself ana abdukal ‘ajeezu, dayeefu, miskinu, zhalim wa jahl, and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we are still in existence.
All Creation is Bound to Follow the Natural Divine Law
Alhamdulillah that Allah (AJ) guided us to this path of ishq and muhabbat (love) towards the immense realities of Divinely Presence which direct itself to the ishq and love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and the way of good characters and good manner. To take a path in which Allah (AJ) shows upon the horizon and within ourself.
41:53 – “Sanureehim ayatina fil afaqi wa fee anfusihim hatta yatabayyana lahum annahu alhaqqu…” (Surat Al-Fussilat)
“We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth…” (Explained in Detail, 41:53)
It is the natural order. It is the shari’ah (Divine law) when people talk about Islamic law and implementing shari’ah. Shari’ah is a natural order. It is the rule in which Allah (AJ) has put upon creation and all of creation is subject to that rule. Only the men of free will can temporarily believe that they can choose not to follow Divine decree and Divine law. But in essence, everyone follows.
The System of Guidance Taught by Sun and Moon
So this way of guidance, it’s not constructed or reconstructed from imaginations because many non-natural, you listen to them and it doesn’t sound natural. Allah (AJ), because it’s from the Divine, shows that, ‘I show you upon the horizon and I show you within yourself,’ [41:53]. When Allah (AJ) is continuously directing our attention to the moon and the sun, the sun and the moon, the sun and the moon.
a) The Sun:
The sun being the light and an eternal light and an eternal symbol of eternity. Anyone wants to know what is eternity? Well, a symbol of eternity in our creation is the sun. It has always been there through all the lives of all the prophets (as) and giants and dinosaurs and jinns (unseen beings) and whatever people are going to conjure up. Its that same sun has been watching them. The moon for as long as we understand has been following.
b) The Earth:
The Earth is symbolic of insan (mankind). So the inhabitants of Earth they are insan.
c) The Moon:
The moon is a guidance and the sun is a source of light. The natural order that Allah (AJ) asks us to watch and men have always been gazing upon the stars to understand the natural order. They see that the direction of the moon is continuously following the sun and it gives to us the symbol of guidance, the symbol of ‘Follow the Light. Don’t be distracted going left and right.’ As a result, the moon has its reality. So the people of tafakkur (contemplation), they understand Maqamul Fardani when awliyaullah (saints) talk about the Maqam Fardan, I think it means of the furthest boundary of immense importance. This Maqamul Fardani is then of the highest of these awliya. That, that station of that wali (saint) is like a moon and is symbolic by the moon and the path in which to take difficulties, take humiliation, take hardships, but keep following the light and don’t go off course from that light. Based on that reality that we talked last night then Allah (AJ) says, ‘When you see on the horizon, our system of guidance is you follow the light.’
10:5 – “Huwal ladhee ja’alash shamsa Diya an wal qamara Nooran wa qaddarahu manazila lita’lamo ‘adadas sineena wal hisaba…” (Surat Yunus)
“It is He who made the Sun a shining glory/Splendor and the Moon a derived light and determined for it phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time]….” (Jonah, 10:5)
The light is eternal. That there is a symbol of that is – be like the moon in which it follows the light, it follows the light and it doesn’t change its course. So then that gives the symbol of guidance. So that means every form of guidance has to be based on that formula.
Rasuls (Messengers of Allah (AJ)) are Symbolic of the Sun
So then the guidance is to follow the prophetic reality, and the moons should be the symbol of prophetic reality because then this is always a constant mirroring. So we look on the horizon and we see that the moon follows the light. And that awliya, Sahabi (Holy Companions of Prophet ﷺ), the Ahlul Bayt (Holy Family of Prophet ﷺ) means from all of those whom followed Allah’s (AJ) command, they followed the same system. They followed their Rasul – the one whom is the messenger of Allah (AJ) and is symbolic of the sun because he is a illuminating source of light. Within his reality is a Divinely Presence, a Divinely light, and as a result of that light, they come to Earth and train their companions that, ‘Be like moons.’ That, consistently follow the light, follow the light through all the obstacles and all the testings in life. As a result of the relationship they build, all of Earth is benefiting.
The Guided One will Benefit Himself as well as Everything Around Him
So means the one whom follows guidance not only will his own being benefit. Because he tames his character, he firms his path, he is not looking here and there and bouncing in every direction and as a result of the firmness of that character, anything around them is benefiting. So we benefit from the sunlight and its direct placement exactly where Allah (AJ) put that light for us to breathe, for us to see, for us to have a warmth. Any closer we would burn, any further we would freeze. And the placement of the moon that the immense importance of a reflective light.
Realities for the Seeker When He’s Contemplating the Outside Signs
i) – You’re Not a Light, You’re Merely a Reflection
It means that, that moon light is what grows all of our agriculture and vegetation. The sunlight comes for the limited time and sweetens everything that’s growing. So has many, many realities when the seeker is looking from the outside. As a result, when they reflect into the natural order of guidance, Allah (AJ) then inspires within your heart then, ‘Be like My creation. Don’t make things up,’ don’t, you know, all these different types of philosophies. ‘Follow the example of My creation in which take a path in which to be like the moon.’ Admit to yourself, you are not a light.
ii) – Allah (AJ) Gave Everyone a Light like Candle, Use It to Reach Your Reality
People, before they start anything, feel that they have a light; they’ve read some books, they feel they have a light. What they have is merely a reflection until they can reach their reality. We described before, they are like a candle. It mean Allah (AJ) gave everybody a temporary light within their existence. If they truly become like moons and they direct themself to a source of light, because many will come and go off of orbit and follow the dunya (material world), follow shaitan (satan), follow all these different distractions, their light will be lost. So, Allah (AJ) gave to us a light like a candle, and a candle in the wind that it keeps burning down and time is limited. Some candles are eighty years, some candles are eight years, some candles are eight minutes – depending upon the existence that Allah (AJ) gave to the person and to that creation coming into existence. With this candle that Allah (AJ) gave, our purpose is to reach our reality.
iii) – Take Your Bombardments with Patience Like Moon
So that when the moon is following its course, learning its lesson, it’s receiving so much light and reflection from that sun. As a result it becomes illuminated. In the way of tariqahs (spiritual paths) it’s the path of illumination to continuously be dressed, continuously be dressed by its reality. That, continuous testing and bombardment is what takes away everything other than Allah (AJ) on the surface of the moon. It means it’s not like the Earth filled with earthly. That in its core reality, it’s devoid and not showing of that. As a result it’s been tested and it follows the course and as a result, it reflects the sunlight.
Entering the Orbit of Sun and Achieving Death Before Death
If we take that path towards that secret, towards that spiritual reality, we begin to reflect those lights and as we reflect those lights, we enter into the orbit of the sun. So it means this journey is a continuous reality. So that the holy companions in their state of being moons, Prophet ﷺ described then even higher for them. That, ‘Follow any of them, they’re like stars on a dark night,’ and then opened an immense reality of ma’rifah (Gnosticism).
“Ashabi kan Nujoom, bi ayyihim aqta daytum ahta daytum.”
“My companions are like stars. Whoever among them you follow, you will be rightly guided.” Prophet Muhammad (saws)
That they approached to such a proximity to the prophetic reality that Allah (AJ) made them to be stars, means that their mass was burned. You know like when a planet is entering a state of death, and this is what Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (as) was teaching – the state of death before death.
That instead of this temporary existence on this Earth and following that light, being illuminated by that light, Allah (AJ) will allow the servant to enter into a state of death; mawt qablil mawt (death of desires before physical death) in which they die before they actually went to the grave. And what happens at that reality and how does that reality come? Its when the mass of their being dies. It means that the desire of the ‘m’ with an E=mc², if the mass [m] drops, the equation is energy [E] equals two lights² [mc²]. Because once you take the mass off, it’s an equation just for energy.
So means then to reach our energy state, it’s about reducing the importance of the mass – what the mass wants, what the mass eats, what the mass thinks, what the mass desires. It means the state of death before death is that through the physicality and the importance of what the physicality wants is of no importance. So that’s a continuous state of dropping the energy of the physicality in which we call the ‘zero state of energy point.’ In which through tawbah (repentance), through forgiveness, through asking istighfar (seeking forgiveness), through all these desires being tested and bombarded and bombarded Allah (AJ) put within the servant a state of death before death. They don’t really care anymore what people are doing. That the state within their being is in a state of surrender in which Allah (AJ) take them, they’re gone. If Allah (AJ) keep them, they work. As a result of the mass being disseminated and brought down, they operate through their energy. So means that few can traverse.
Prophet ﷺ is Like a Black Hole which Annihilates All Mass
That moon, become like a moon, enter into these oceans of secrets and now present and be present into the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That, Prophet’s ﷺ other reality is that he is like the black hole. That the reality of Prophet ﷺ mahidh dhunub (erase of sins), muhyil qulub (reviver of hearts). ‘Muhamma’ is a spinning ocean of power in which Prophet’s ﷺ reality of light annihilates everything for Allah (AJ). That doesn’t allow anything to come into Allah’s (AJ) Presence with like a presence, for us just to understand, like if anyone’s coming with, ‘Here I am,’ the reality and the light of Prophet ﷺ is like a black hole. It will suck that in and begin to disseminate, disintegrate that reality.
If you’ve ever watched these scientific clips of what they believe a black hole is – that a structure enters as it’s moving towards that, it’s actually fragmenting and becoming nothing. Piece by piece it’s being pulled as nothing and sucked into that mass in which it pulls everything out. Nothing left. What space would understand of soil. Now, anyone who has any backyard, if you take a fresh fruit and drop it on your grass, within about five, six days, the grass and the soil actually will begin to eat that fruit. You lift it up and it’s all rotted on the back means it’s already disintegrating anything that comes on top of it and near it. So soil on this Earth is like the similar property of a black hole. That anything approaches that light, annihilates. The one that annihilates everything for Allah (AJ) to bring them into Divinely Presence is the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Say, that’s why the companions are the stars but then the one who makes them stars is a star maker. What is the star maker? Its that, they’ll find out its a reality of a black hole and a massive black hole. That, Prophet ﷺ can give that trait to his stars in which they progress.
Ocean of Fana (Annihilation) and Baqa (Eternal Existence) – Star Formation
The reality of awliya and the souls of awliya, they move through the realities of stars. It means that if they understood their moon reality, if they understood how to reflect and be a symbolic moon, they’re brought into the reality and the ishq (love) of Prophet ﷺ which annihilates them. And these are Dalail ul Khairat (book of praising on Prophet ﷺ) and these are the oceans of power in which their being enters into this ocean, that ocean begins to disintegrate. Once they disintegrate, that becomes the haqqaiq (realities) of fana and that Prophet ﷺ will bring them back in the oceans of baqa.
Formation of Star: Story of Sayyidina Jalaluddin Rumi (Q)
So means now they are in a new existence. As a result, they’re now in one of the categories of suns. That’s why if you read the lataifs (subtle energy points) of the heart, that there is now a movement in their reality that they become like a sun [Shaykh points to heart]. So the shaykhs of this understanding and these realities, they entered into that – their mass has been burned now they’ve entered into the schools of shams (sun). When was this? This was in the masal (example) and the teachings of Sayyidina Jalaluddin Rumi (Q) who was a moon and not understanding the light that he had and the external knowledges that he had. Allah (AJ) sent one of his servants was named Shams at Tabriz (Q) because he represented the shams. Tabriz – ‘tab’ and ‘riz’ means ‘Of the Highest Temperature.’ It means one of these suns on Earth that had an immense temperature, immense tajalli (manifestation) that Allah (AJ) put within them.
Formation of Star: Story of Sayyidina Musa (as)
So means that the one whom traverses into this reality is now entering, losing their mass, entering the state of death before death. But what happens is that their light is being cleaned by Allah (AJ). That from the light they had will be brought to nothing and Allah (AJ) will bring them back into existence. So this is what happened with Sayyidina Musa (as). ‘Ya Rabbi let me see You,’ means he wanted to traverse the station of light that he had, enter into the secret and the reality. What he saw is, Allah (AJ) describe, ‘You can’t see Me because whom you’ve been talking to…’ That’s why in the na’at (prophetic praising) we ask, ‘Ask Musa (as) what he saw?’
“Kis ko dekha, yeh Musa se pooche koyi, Aankho waalo ki himmat pe, Laakho salaam.”
“Someone should ask Prophet Moses (as), Whom did he see? Millions of salutations upon the Courageous Eyes that could witness that Glory.”
He saw the light of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Because he went from his noon, went through the seen and entered into the presence of that fire, that Divinely sun of the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. As a result became khashiya (dust) – dead – burnt in the presence of the black hole. It means everything annihilated in the reality of Sayyidina Musa (as) and then when he was revived, “Ana awwalul muslimeen.”
7:143 – “Wa lamma jaa Musa limeeqatina wa kallamahu Rabbuhu, qala rabbi arinee anzhur ilayka, Qala lan taranee wa lakini onzhur ilal jabali fa inistaqarra makanahu, fasawfa taranee, falamma tajalla Rabbuhu lil jabali ja`alahu, dakkan wa kharra Musa sa`iqan, falamma afaqa qala subhanaka tubtu ilayka wa ana awwalul Mumineen.” (Surat Al-A’raf)
“And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, “My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You.” [Allah] said, “you will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in its place, then you will see Me.” But when his Lord manifested His glory on the mountain, He made it as dust, and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke/recovered his senses, he said, “Glory be to You! to You I turn in repentance, and I am the first of the believers.” (The Heights. 7:143)
This means now, he’s of a Muhammadan haqqaiq.
The Word Insan (انسان) Describes Our Spiritual Path
So means throughout Qur’an these are examples of that reality. Just the kalimah (word) insan has the whole spiritual path and the inner reality of the prophets (as) of Allah (AJ) and what they wanted to seek of these realities and how to reach that light. Because between the alif and the noon, nobody can reach to the alif without coming into the presence of that naar (fire); shamsun. So, Shamsul ‘Arifeen (Sun of Knowers), Shamsul Ma’rifah, all of these ways is based on as an analogy for us is – you have to enter the sun. And that sun begin to burn everything away. As a result, it will make everything to vanish and enter into that black hole like a soil that makes everything to be taken away and then brought back and re-brought back into existence with the perfect annihilation and the perfect understanding of belief. At that time become muslimoon. It means that they now have the Muhammadan light and dressing upon themselves.
Importance of Good Character and Love in Spiritual Path
So means this is our immense realities of guidance. These are the immense realities of light and the movement towards the realities of light and the ishq and muhabbat of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. This can only be achieved with good manners and good character. It can only be achieved with love. There’s not a prayer that you can do. There’s not a zakat (charity) that you can do. All of those are to be done to nourish the love and good character within the heart of insan. With their good character and love their prayers have power. When there’s good character and there’s love, their zakat has power. With their character and love their Hajj (pilgrimage) has power. So means all of that, its base and foundation should be ishq and muhabbat with good manners, good character, ishq and muhabbat of Allah (AJ) and Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Allah’s (AJ) Love Reflects to the Love of Prophet ﷺ
The one whom is true in their love for Allah (AJ) and they stand by that love of Allah (AJ), means it becomes the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Because they love what The One whom they love loves. When you love Allah (AJ) with all sincerity and Allah (AJ) teaches the servant, ‘I love Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.’ “Qul in kuntum tuhibbon Allaha fattabi’uni” – ‘Tell them if they want My love, follow, follow you – Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.’
3:31 – “Qul in kuntum tuhibbon Allaha fattabi’uni, yuhbibkumullahu…” (Surat Ali-Imran)
“Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you …” (Family of Imran, 3:31)
So then that becomes a sincere love that “Sam’ina wa ata’na” – ‘We heard Ya Rabbi and we are loving whom You love.’
(Surat Al-Baqarah)
“…We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.” (The Cow, 2:285)
And then Prophet ﷺ described, ‘If you love me more than you love yourself, you are now entering into faith and the oceans of faith.’
‘An Anas ibn Malik (ra) qala, qala Rasulullahi ﷺ “La yuminu ahadukum hatta akona ahabba ilayhi min walidihi wa waladihi wan nasi ajma’yeen.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 44, wa Al Bukhari, Kitabul Iman, Hadith 15]
Narrated by Anas son of Malik (ra) that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children, and all mankind.” [Authentic by Muslim, Hadith 44 & by Al Bukhari, Book of Faith, Hadith 15]
Truthfulness to Love
So means the one whom stands by that love, is true to that love, Allah (AJ) is also dressing them with the title of ‘sadiq’ (truthful) and ‘Siddiq’ that these are truthful servants. Not because they talk and they don’t lie, but in their love and in their heart, their truthfulness. So that when they’re true in their heart and true in their faith, everything will become true for them. Because the one whom has one piece of flesh, if it’s good, all of them will be good. And the one whom has that one piece of flesh bad, all will be bad.
‘An An Nu’man bin Bashir (ra) qala: sami’tu Rasulullahi ﷺ yaqulo: “Ala wa inna fil jasadi mudghatan izaa salahat salahal jasado kulluhu, wa izaa fasadat fasadal jasadu kulluhu, ala wa heyal Qalb.” [Sahih Al Bukhari, Kitab 2, Hadith 45]
An Nu’man bin Bashir (ra) said that I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) saying: “There is a piece of flesh in the body, if it corrected/perfected the whole body becomes good. But if it gets spoiled, the whole body gets spoiled, and that is the heart.” [Ṣahih al Bukhari 52, Book 2, Hadith 45]
Imagine the one who tells you truth on his tongue, truth by his hand, but his heart is black and dark. It means no truthfulness in the heart, then the rest is lies and it’s dangerous. That’s a munafiq (hypocrite), that’s the danger of this nation, whom their tongue and their mouth says something but the heart is not that – the heart is not that reality.
But the one whom the heart is clear and sincere and loves truly Allah (AJ), loves Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, then that love within their heart, Allah (AJ) makes their tongue to speak truth, their hands to move with truth and their feet to follow the truth. That’s called faith, real faith. That if Allah’s (AJ) in the heart and their character’s based on muhabbat and love, Allah (AJ) is guiding. Right? Because Allah (AJ), “Ittaqollah wa kono ma’as sadiqeen.” “Wat taqollaha, wa allimukumullah.”
9:119 – “Ya ayyuhal ladheena amanoo ittaqollaha wa kono ma’as sadiqeen.” (Surat At-Tawba)
“O you who have believed, have consciousness of Allah and be with those who are truthful/Pious/sincere (in words and deed).” (The Repentance, 9:119)
2:282 – “…Wat taqollaha, wa yu’allimukumullahu, wallahu bi kulli shayin ‘Aleem.” (Surat Al-Baqarah)
“…And Be conscious of/Fear Allah, And Allah teaches you. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.” (The Cow, 2:282)
If You Keep Taqwa (Consciousness), Allah (AJ) will Guide You to the Truth
The one whom has a taqwa, Allah (AJ) will teach him, Allah (AJ) will guide that one. That’s the state in which to reach. Not the one whom self-professes their sincerity, but this way of moving in these oceans of love is that Allah (AJ) says, ‘The one whom has that consciousness, that taqwa and love for Me, I will teach that servant. I will guide that servant. I’ll put them with the sadiqs and siddiqs and they’ll sit with them and train them and teach them.’ And if the world you can’t find a sadiq and siddiq (truthful), Allah (AJ) will make them to appear in your ruhani (spiritual) and in your presence and teach you. So it means the immensity of these lights and the immensity of this way is based on good character. Not the conspiring and groups that sit together and conspire on how to come against people.
We pray that Allah (AJ) dress us and protect us, dress us in the holy month of Rajab that’s opening up with the lights and the month of lights, the month of Allah’s (AJ) immense mercy, coming in Sunday and Monday inshaAllah. To grant us from His Divinely favors in the holy month of Rajab, inshaAllah.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
