The Virgin Mary is revered as one of the most important female figures in Islam. Like Christians, Muslims believe that due to her extreme spiritual purity, Mary (“Maryam” in Arabic)—upon her be eternal peace—was chosen by God to give birth the Messiah, Jesus Christ (ع). Muslims also share the belief in the “virgin” conception: that the soul of Jesus entered her womb directly from the “Holy Spirit,” which was deposited into her womb by Angel Gabriel (ع), without the touch of any mortal man. Like the Christians and the Jews, Muslims await the return of the Messiah to earth, which will herald a new age of peace and immense spiritual harmony for the whole of humanity, insha’Allah (God willing).

Lyrics (translated):

Her Lord bestowed on her a heart most pure,
And a remembrance (on her soul) at the heights of piety.
And Mary was honoured “above all women” (Qur’an 3:42)
When God bestowed her with the birth of a pure soul. (Qur’an 19:19)

The doves of Jerusalem are longing for her voice,
Which once floated tenderly from the Furthest Mosque / House of Worship
Pleading to God in depths of the nights
With prayers sweet as dew from her chamber.

The palm tree was eager to serve her during her labour, (Qur’an 19:23)
lavishing her with ripe dates (Qur’an 19:25)
It’s trunk yearned in love for her holy presence
As did the water, which sprung beneath her feet. (Qur’an 19:24)

Her Lord bestowed on her a heart most pure,
And a remembrance (on her soul) at the heights of piety.
And Mary was honoured “above all women” (Qur’an 3:42)
When God bestowed her with the birth of a pure soul. (Qur’an 19:19)

Peace be upon you, O Prophet of God Jesus,
from the depths of my being, I greet you sincerely!
You are the Spirit sent from the Lord of all Creation, (Qur’an 4:171)
And you are the rains of mercy, manifest as a Prophet.

You were made blessed throughout time,
And you spoke truth as an infant in your cradle. (Qur’an 19:29)
They did not kill nor crucify you, but
you were raised to the heavens, eternally alive. (Qur’an 3:55)
