True Growth Comes From Service to the Shaykh’s Mission

I seek refuge in Allah (AJ) from the accursed Satan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.

“…Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
The First Ten Days of Ramadan are a Mercy From Allah (AJ)
InshaAllah, Allah (AJ) dress us and bless us with the immensity of the holy month of Sha’ban as it’s drawing to an end, and the immense realities of the sultan (king) of months, and the blessed month of holy Ramadan in which Holy Qur’an and its lights, and Allah’s (AJ) gifts upon the soul.
We pray that Allah (AJ) dress us and bless us from that reality and gives us the strength to enter into the holy month of Ramadan, in which the first ten days are a mercy from Allah (AJ), and that, inshaAllah, Fa A’uzu Billahi Minash shaitanir Rajeem Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem.
‘An Salman al Farsi (ra), an Rasulullahi ﷺ qala: “Shahru Ramadana awwalahu rahmatun, wa awsatuhu maghfiratun, wa akhiruhu ‘itqun minan naar.” [Al Imam al Albani, Meshkat al Masabih, Kitab 7, Hadith 9]
Narrated by Salman al Farsi (ra), that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “The first (ten days) of the month of Ramadan is mercy, the middle (ten days) is forgiveness, and the last (ten days) is salvation/freedom from the fire.” [Al Imam al Albani, Meshkat al Masabih, Book 7, Hadith 9]
Without Serving in Tariqah, You’re Just a Spectator
That a reminder for myself is that with all these blessings and all these dressings, our life is to live a life of service. The tariqah (spiritual path) comes to give us the tools in which to accomplish that life. If we are not…where’s that echo coming from? If we’re not living a life of service, it’s like being a spectator to the tariqah. What’s the metal there? It’s echoing… Without the khidmat (service), it’s like a spectator. The reality of tariqah opens only through the khidmat and the service.
That has every sort of deep reality as a reminder for ourselves that when people are praying for an opening, praying for the realities of tariqah to open, the nearness to Allah (AJ), the nearness to Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, and to keep the company of awliyaullah (saints). A reminder from our own lives is that everything open from khidmat, from service. It wasn’t where the shaykh said, ‘Okay, now sit and ponder the realities of YaSeen and now every sort of reality will open for your heart.’
Service is Tariqah, Not a Hobby
But our life was a life of service. In our service to this way and service to the shaykhs and service on the tariqah, every type of dressing and reality is dressed upon the servant. The khidmat is the tariqah. That when we serve, we’re serving Allah (AJ). When Allah (AJ) wants to give the servant a reward, it’s based on their service; how well they do their service, how loyal they are to their service and how their kholoq and their character determine the quality of their service.
Because of the world we live in now, people think that they enrolled in tariqah, service is maybe like a hobby. ‘I’ll do some service as a part of the tariqah.’ But it is the tariqah. It is the path. It is the way. What was the service of the Holy Companions? It was to serve Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, in which they served with their holy lives. They put their lives on the line. This was the way that the risalat (prophecy) and the messenger and the message of the Divine would be delivered to humanity. They led by that example in our life.
Think About How You Can Serve With Your Abilities
That Allah (AJ) gives everyone to their ability and to the opening that’s available for them is to serve. So, when we enter into a tariqah, we have to come within our hearts on how to serve. Not so much just to ask the shaykh, ‘How can I serve?’ But we have to think from what Allah (AJ) has given to us of our abilities, of our understanding, of what has been made available to us. “Qul inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi Rabbil ‘Aalamin”.
Say, “Indeed, my prayer, my services of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He; and this I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.” (The Cattle, 6:162-163)
You Will Be Judged on the Quality of Your Service
That Allah (AJ) gives us a reminder in Holy Qur’an that you know you’re going to be tested like those who came before you, with your life, your death, your family, your possessions. Everything is on the table for Allah (AJ) that you’re going to be tested with. The testing is the tariqah. So, when given a task, this is a great gift. Instead of people thinking, ‘Oh, why I have to do it?,’ this is Allah’s (AJ) gift that this is your way to achieve. Allah (AJ) may put you at task to do something and then change you to do this and then change you to do that, all along judging the quality of the service.
That with what sincerity do you serve? With what sort of diligence? Some people serve in a sense where they don’t care for it. They almost want it to be known that they don’t care. That’s not the way that Allah (AJ) wants to judge the servant. It means that when we come, we’re asking from Allah (AJ), that, ‘Ya Rabbi, I want to serve You to the best of my ability. Whether I wash the floors, whether I deliver food – whatever it is that You’re asking me to do – whether I write articles, whether I sing a song, or whatever it is that You want me to do, I’m doing it with my love and service to You and to service to Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ’.
Stay Quiet in Your Testing
Our life was about accomplishing that reality. That was our tariqah. That they put us in an office, in our own lives, we can only speak for. They would put us in a office and it was upside down. Every day, there was a battle in that environment. With Mawlana (Q), it was…it was a very fierce testing. There was always people who were all over the place in their mind. They would yell and insult. I just remember that everything that came to our heart was stay quiet.
They would yell, insult and make it so that you just want to go back home and not ever go back to that office again. Our life was a test: stay quiet, stay quiet, do what they asked us to do. Then at one point, he would give us, okay, ‘Now you arrange the shop.’ Then we would sit and arrange the shop, perfectly arrange the shop. Then he said that, ‘You get out of the shop. Put that guy in it’. There was this one individual who became like really crazy. He would sleep in the shop because he started to become affected with his mind.
We Complain When We Serve Instead of Considering It as Allah’s (AJ) Gift
So, Mawlana (Q) said, ‘Just go home. You have nothing to do with the shop anymore’. So continuously, our lives were evolving in khidmat and it was a rahmah (mercy). It was the way to be tested. That was the tariqah for us. That how well you would do the job that’s been given to you, regardless how remedial you may think it to be. If you wash the washroom, then it’s the best washroom on Earth. You can eat from that washroom, it will be so clean.
Not that, ‘Why I have this task? How come I’m not doing the big things that other people are doing?’ There is no big thing that anyone’s doing. Whatever somebody’s doing, it’s exactly what Allah (AJ) wanted them to do. May make a big person do a small thing and make a small person do a big thing. Maybe that’s the medicine and the environment that they need. Our life was testing. When we don’t live a life of testing, when we don’t do the khidmat, when we don’t try to put ourselves forward, then the tariqah becomes nafsani (egocentric) – the cleaning through nafsani, through sickness and very difficult testing.
Be Active in Your Service, Not a Bystander
So, this is always a watchful eye for ourselves. That either you want to do it the easy way or Allah (AJ) has a way of making it the hard way. The hard way is when say, ‘No, I don’t actually. I enrolled in tariqah and that’s really it. I don’t want to be of service to Prophet ﷺ. I don’t believe any of these things were necessary.’ The people become sick and they begin to serve their sickness in which, every day, they have to do something to take care of themself, to heal themselves. That also is then is khidmat. It’s a khidmat to your body, but it’s a much more difficult way.
Always the reminder to ourselves is even sickness may come with your khidmat, but our life was to volunteer for services; not to sit back and be a bystander while others serve us. That was the tariqah. We enter into a place, we’re going to clean it. We’re going to make sure it’s right. We’re going to make sure it’s great. Where, if we’re sitting at home, I’m going to find a way to deliver some food to…Now we’ve even said that you can post articles, take the sohbats (discourses), make images – so many different ways for us to achieve our rank with Allah (AJ).
You Give Your Allegiance When You Enter Tariqah
I don’t know how to convey its importance because some people think it’s very remedial. That, ‘That’s not the tariqah. The tariqah I accepted the shaykh and now things will start coming my way’. But in actuality, the tariqah was the service. As soon as you came to the service, to the tariqah, you gave your life. You said, ‘I’m giving my bay’at, my allegiance. I’m not taking anything from them. I’m going to give everything to them. My life, my will, my everything will be in the service of Allah (AJ) and the way of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.’
Now, through the virtual, people are from all over the world. They can’t come to the zawiyah (spiritual school of Sufism) to clean. They can’t come to volunteer at the zawiyahs, but everybody can volunteer wherever they are. They get the shirt for the sake of the tariqah, not that you could give the food yourself. You could do that without the shaykh, but you’re trying to promote the services that the shaykh and the mission of the shaykh is on.
When You Don’t Serve, You Don’t Receive a Grading
So, we said they get the Fatima Zahra shirt all the way in Nigeria. If anyone says they can’t get it in any other country, Abdul Basit went and got it all the way in Nigeria. He puts this shirt on, three other gentlemen are out there now putting shirts on and they give food out. This is a great accomplishment. For all those whom are serving, this is an example that you put your faith in action. This is exactly the way Allah (AJ) wants to now judge the servant.
Their service is honest. Their service is clean. Their service now is how are they interacting with people. You can see now, as a result of service, you begin to know all the grading processes. Where if you’re just sitting at home, you’re not being graded. That’s maybe why your nafs (ego) is telling you, ‘Don’t, don’t serve’ because then you’re going to be graded. Oh, look how you interact with people. Did you cheat those people? You were supposed to give them food and you didn’t give them the food? Did you…were you rude to them? Were you harmful to people? Were you abusive and thought now that you have an authority, maybe you can abuse and you know, [be] inappropriate with certain people?
You Cannot Throw Allah’s (AJ) Wallet Around, But Safeguard Your Own
All of the khdmat, the service, opens all of this testing. That’s why Allah (AJ) wants the servant. That’s why Prophet ﷺ wants is go out and serve the nation so that we can begin to judge you, judge your character, judge your ability, judge your sincerity and that you’re doing your service with sincerity. That you safeguard what’s yours more than what’s yours. Sometimes when they deal with the tariqah, they spend as if it should be finished all tomorrow. But with their own money, not a dime is moved without them understanding.
Well, you can’t do that. You can’t take Allah’s (AJ) wallet and throw it everywhere, but your own wallet, you safeguard. So, we can see that how every aspect of the tariqah gives to us a way for Allah (AJ) to begin judgment. That check, correct, correct, correct, correct. By virtue of that service, sainthood is granted; not by sitting and I’m going to now meditate on Surah YaSeen all day and night, day and night, something will open.
Your Khidmat, Not Your Knowledge, Opens Your Proximity to Allah (AJ)
Sainthood doesn’t open by those realities. Knowledge was a gift because of the service the servant provided in Allah’s (AJ) way. Knowledge is not what opens your wilayat (sainthood) and your station and proximity to Allah (AJ). It was your khidmat. This the only thing. Some people think that they’re going to study something, study knowledges, and then all of a sudden gain the rank of some special sort of servant from Allah (AJ).
But from our own example, it was carrying the bags of the shaykh through airports. It was sitting in meetings and associations. It was about doing this, doing that, sitting at the store, sitting at the office, sitting here, sitting there, traveling thousands of miles, lift this, lift that, get out of the picture, get back in the picture. A whole life of khidmat and all along, they’re judging. Okay, character was good. When they were humiliated, they were soft and quiet.
There is No Retirement in Tariqah
All of that lend its ability for Allah (AJ) to judge the servant. With that judgment is how the servant will be raised and that is the door to the tariqah. So, when we say the way – actually, the way is service. You live a life for service and every day you feel like you don’t want to do it, you do it again and you do it again. The shaykh appears with the same, tired but still has to appear, tired, still has to serve. There’s no retirement in our life and in this way. Our life was vouchsafed to serve.
As a result, then the trust and the realities were given. The trust was only given because you were willing to serve. Otherwise, everyone would receive their trust and run away to some foreign island where nobody would bother them again. But the only purpose of the trust being given was that you would serve the nation and then to become a people whom are servicing the nation of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ to whatever little degree that the people have as an ability.
Complaining Destroys Your Khidmat
It’s not something that is huge and conquering everything. But every ant has to take his drop of water and throw it onto the fires of ignorance and anger. This was our life and this is a reminder of our life when we’re entering into Ramadan because so many times people negate their service with bad character. So, we said this is the way to sainthood. What’s the way to destroy your khidmat? It’s complaining because we’re describing that this is…this is the way for Allah (AJ).
Out of and always remind ourselves that, you know, my shaykh always said that the moment you are inappropriate and wrong, there 10,000 shaykhs waiting to take your place. It’s not hard for Allah (AJ) to seal your mouth where you can’t talk anymore and open three other tongues because for Allah (AJ) is just three tongues miraculously overnight start speaking what nobody could speak.
Move Over If You Don’t Want to Serve – You’re Highly Replaceable
So, Allah (AJ) say, ‘I have them lined up, 10,000 of them if at any time you think that you’re special’. So, nobody serving is special. Nothing, no one is special. Everyone is highly replaceable. 10,000 people sit waiting at your station. If you think you are unique, then you’re Iblis because that’s how shaitan felt. That, ‘I’m not going to make sajdah (prostration), therefore, the whole of creation will collapse.’
2:34 – “Wa iz qulna lil malayikati osjudo li Adama fasajado illa ibleesa…” (Surat Al-Baqarah)
“And [mention] when We said to the angels, ‘Bow Down to Adam’; so they prostrated, except for Iblis…” (The Cow, 2:34)
No, the train went on and he became the only one who didn’t obey. It means that even in our khidmat, to humble ourselves. There’s nothing to be proud of. If you don’t want to do it, step out of the way, go home. 10,000 people will show up. The only reason they’re not there now and you can’t see them is because there’s no space. So, one seat moves, three will become and sit in it and that’s wherever people are in this world. There’s nothing; Allah (AJ) has no shortage of humans.
Don’t Be Proud, But Keep Your Humility
There’s only a shortage of the seats in these schools of tarbiyah (discipline). The way of wilayat and sainthood and proximity and nearness to the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. So one: we were taught early never to be proud. You’re very replaceable. Okay, as a result, whatever test came, we stayed quiet. Whatever type of aggression, we stayed quiet because we’re replaceable. As a result, we lived a life of trying to be as humble as possible and represent the reality and the role that was given to us to represent.
This, again, for every other servant. When they get in a position to serve, all they want to do is complain. ‘Nobody comes. I’m doing too much’. Doing too much? You’re lucky you’re doing it at all. ‘Nobody comes. Nobody…’ because Allah (AJ) wrote for you to do it. If everybody was going to come, then that wouldn’t be the khidmat.
So, the khidmat is very specific. Allah (AJ) like giving you a medallion, ‘You, I’m giving you the honour to go out and to do this, to serve this, to represent this.’ You don’t look left and right – why 10 people are not doing it with you? Because Allah (AJ) gave you the honour to do it. The honour is not understood by the fact that 10 people are not doing it with me. Instead, ‘Allah (AJ) has accepted my du’a (supplication) that I wanted to serve. I wanted to serve Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and the Naqshbandi Masters and this golden chain.’
We Complain When Allah (AJ) Calls Us Into Service
So, okay. You’re told to do this and you do it to the best of your ability; not a single complaint. Not anyone should even hear you complaining because this was an honour Allah (AJ) gave. As soon as you complain about the service, you have negated the barakah and the blessing of that service as if you started in day one with nothing because who are you complaining to? To Allah (AJ), that He decided to raise you up now and test you and to Prophet ﷺ, who gave us an opportunity to try to achieve?
You know, if you ever played sports in school and if you were the fat little guy that nobody called on for the team or fat big guy because we’re big and they’re picking team people, but they don’t pick you and you pray, pray in your heart, ‘No, why don’t they pick me on the first time? I’m also a good athlete’. Our lives are like that. All of us are wondering how come Allah (AJ) is not calling us into service and when he does call us into service, 90% of the people begin to complain. ‘It’s just too much. It’s too busy. Nobody else is helping. Well, why we have to go out and do this? Why, why, why, why, why?’
Testing is Endless and Difficult
Then we understand how difficult it is to achieve in this life spiritually. That becomes a reminder, always to ourself, that testing is difficult. That the opportunity is rare in which Allah (AJ) opens for servants. That can be wherever they are. That if Allah (AJ) open for you the ability that to comes into your heart to get the shirt, go out and begin to feed people. Then remember Allah (AJ) gave you that ability. He opened for you that responsibility.
Now, you can’t say, ‘I’m tired. It’s too much and I don’t feel like doing it’ because now you’re failing at your service. Or if you’re sharing and you’re putting out the articles and you’re putting out all of these things and shaitan coming to you to distract you, to annoy you and to slow you down and you begin to realize, ‘Now, I’m slowing down in how my service is going. I’m not putting out as much and the quality is not that good.’
Beware When Your Khidmat Slows Down
All of that is the muhasabah (accounting). When we talk about muhasabah and accounting of ourselves, this is the muhasabah. Not only I’m sitting and breathing and taking an account of myself is that, ‘Allah (AJ), open for me to serve. Why am I not serving? Why is my service slowing down? Shaitan is putting the brakes now on something. I just did something only two times’. Or for 25 years, showing up every day, doing your thing; 30 years, every day doing your things and always grateful that Prophet ﷺ nazar (gaze) be upon you.
‘Don’t take your nazar off and then pass me by and make me to be something irrelevant’. Many have come and gone trying to throw us out, but we’re still standing by the will of Allah (AJ) and nazar and will of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. We believe because of the extreme amount of pushing people, to serve and love Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
When You Propagate the Love of Prophet ﷺ, You’re Under His Nazar
That this is a noble cause in which to encourage others as we’ve been encouraged. Our life and the bounty of our life was in khidmat. That was it! Not I sat down and I ate the food at the zikr (Divine remembrance) and I ate all the food at the zikr. That was not anyone’s service. Our service is that we came to this opportunity and we rose to the challenge. Put out articles. Put out Mawlids (celebration of the birthday of Prophet ﷺ). Put out events. Propagate the reality of the sunnah (traditions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).
Now, look, mashAllah, all the hundreds of pictures a week are going out. All of the sunnah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and posting article after article after article after article. Until now, you see other tariqahs are joining in and now posting their pictures and their images. This is a propagation of the love of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Now, all those people doing that, they’re under the nazar of Prophet ﷺ.
Your Khidmat Opens the Rahmah and Bounty of Your Lives
As a reminder, as we’re entering into Ramadan, is that our life is our khidmat. If you put that as number one, that opens the rahmah and the bounty of all our lives. The service is our ticket to paradise, not our own lives, but the service that we provide brings the fruit for our lives. The service we provide brings the bounty of our lives. That’s the immensity.
That when we’re asking for Ramadan to open, ya Rabbi, not only the reality of my fasting to open, but open the reality of my ears, my eyes, my breath, my senses; all of my five senses to enter into siyam and to fast, to be purified so that the whole of me is of service to the nation of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, with a heart that becomes pure and no evilness and wickedness. That Allah (AJ) be the eyes in which we see, the ears in which we hear, the hands in which we touch, the breath in which we breathe and the tongue in which we speak, and the feet in which we move in the qadam (footstep) of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, the qadam of the great siddiqs (truthful), and the qadam of awliyaullah.
‘An Abi Hurairah (ra) qala, Qala Rasulullahi ﷺ : InnAllaha ta’ala qala: “ …, wa la yazaalu ‘Abdi yataqarrabu ilayya bin nawafile hatta ahebahu, fa idha ahbabtuhu kunta Sam’ahul ladhi yasma’u behi, wa Basarahul ladhi yubsiru behi, …” [Hadith Qudsi, Sahih al Bukhari, Raqam: 6502)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) that: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that: Allah the Almighty said: “…My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees…” [Holy Hadith, Authentic by al-Bukhari, # 6502]
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
Shafa’at ya Rasulul Kareem (The Most Generous Messenger). Alhamdulillah and there’s nobody who can say they can’t serve, even just your finger to share an article. It’s such an easy service. Everybody serve, and everybody has a grave. So, just because we know somebody who serves, that’s not our service. Everyone’s obligated to perform their own services, inshaAllah. Everyone has their own grave, inshaAllah.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
