Submit Your Ears to Open the Levels of the Heart
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi.
A’udhu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ.
Always a reminder for myself ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we’re still in existence. Alhamdulillah, that they are the shaykhs and the guides and that we’re not claiming to be a shaykh and a guide.
Every Journey Has a Beginning and an End
Asking to be nothing, and enter into the oceans of Allah’s (AJ) rahmah and mercy; in per chance Allah (AJ) shower us from that blessing and grant us from the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, Rahmatal lil’alameen.
21:107 – “Wa maa arsalnaka illa Rahmatal lil’alameen.” (Surat Al-Anbiya)
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad (pbuh)], except as a mercy to the worlds/creation.” (The Prophets, 21:107)
InshaAllah from my own understanding always, that when we talk about the opening of the ears, opening of the eyes, opening of these realities, it’s an eternal process. While we have time on dunya (material world), we can only speak about dunya. What Allah (AJ) opened for akhirah (hereafter) is aakhirah. But for dunya means that every journey has a beginning and an end, and every end is a new beginning: the concept of the circle.
Take a Path of Purification to Know What Governs You
For the heart to open, the head has to open. The consciousness has to open, the ears have to open. That I have to be able to hear myself before I can hear the ulul amr (saints), before I can hear Prophet ﷺ, before I can hear Allah’s (AJ) Divinely Emanations. Means I have to be able to hear myself. And the self that they want is not the self of bad desires but the purified self.
So means the tazkiyah (purification) and the whole way of tazkiyatul nafs and the purification of the self is exactly that: where they say that there are lords governing us. Before we can reach to the heavenly lords, the arbab and the heavenly desires, each one is a lord. Even Sayyidina Ibn Arabi (Q) described every attribute of Allah (AJ) has a lordly reality that commands its reality. Means that to know our self, we say that I’m trying to reach the Lord, Most High, then I’m trying to reach what Prophet ﷺ, “Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum.” Try to reach all those realities, but first I’m under the oppression of my bad desires, all the negative lordly desires that govern and imprison the self.
(Surat An-Nisa)
“O You who have believed, Obey Allah, Obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
That’s how we know that these are commanders. Means that all the shayateen (devils) and all the bad desires, they are the ones who are commanding insan (human being). Otherwise we would be able to walk on water and we would be like angels. Everything would be delivered straight to us because Allah (AJ) would be happy with us. So we have to know that there are all these different difficulties constantly attacking us, constantly governing us, constantly inspiring us towards wrong.
Learn to Submit Your Ears, So You Can Hear Your Soul
Then first step is the zikr (Divine remembrance), the accompanying of these spiritual masters, the whole acceptance of submission which is Islam is submission. Then the whole purification process so that I can begin to hear myself. What is it that Allah (AJ) has given as a command to my soul and what is my soul constantly trying to send me of that command. Not of its realities yet, just of what the outer commands should be for my body.
As soon as we begin to move towards that reality, what Prophet ﷺ wanted for the entire nation was reach, “samina wa atana,” is that to hear and to obey.
24:51 – “Innama kana qawlal mumineena idha du’ao ilAllahi wa Rasulihi liyahkuma baynahum an yaqolo samina wa atana, wa olaika humul muflihoon.” (Surat An-Nur)
“The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, “We hear and we obey.” And those are the successful.” (The Light, 24:51)
Submit Your Ears To Hear the Message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Then they begin to focus that the ears have to come into submission. That’s why when we say ‘Allahu Akbar’ [shaykh makes takbir], you put your thumb by your ears, say ‘Allahu Akbar‘. Means Allah (AJ) huwal Akbar, Allah (AJ) Supreme. We should be listening and submitting entirely to Allah (AJ); but we know that’s not possible in dunya. Nobody is otherwise again they’d be walking on water. The only ‘abd (servant) for Allah (AJ) is Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. But we are weak; Allah (AJ) says, ‘Verily you are weak, you are jahoolan, you are an ignorant creation.’ So that they want for us: submit, that everything about you submit.
4:28 – “…Wa Khuliqa Al-‘Insanu Da’ifaan.” (Surat An-Nisa)
“…and mankind was created weak.” (The Women, 4:28)
33:72 – “Inna a’radnal amanata ‘alas Samawati wal ardi wal jibali, fa abayna an yahmilnaha wa ashfaqna minha wa hamalaha al Insanu, innahu kana zhaloman jahoola.” (Surat Al-Ahzab)
“Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was Oppressor/unjust and ignorant.” (The Combined Forces, 33:72)
Submit your ears first to hear the message because it’s a message being sent from Allah (AJ), it’s a message from Prophet ﷺ. So then our whole tazkiyah is about how much I can hear, how much I can hear. How much can I listen to what’s coming to me.
Circles of Zikr Have Tremendous Energy From the Purified Shaykh
Then with the shaykhs, they begin to teach us that do the zikr. Come to the circles of zikr because of the tremendous amount of powerful energy. And there are those within the zikr who have and who are constantly purifying themselves. So excessive amount of positive energy that you may not find in a masjid because the masjid may be filled with people who are just coming and going. Not people who are sitting and constantly trying to purify themselves.
You may have, even the imam (religious leader) has part-time job; he come with a suit, did his work. We have in many areas the imam is a doctor, or a financial person ’cause he had money to build the mosque. They go practise and then they come to do their `ibadah (worship). So doesn’t mean that that person sat and is constantly sitting, constantly purifying themself, constantly working on themself. Constantly taking muhasabah and accounting of themselves every night. Constantly trying to clean, clean, clean, until Allah (AJ) grant that one rida and satisfaction. Then they begin to produce a tremendous amount of light, a tremendous amount of energy.
Keep the Presence of Truthful Guides to Uplift Your Energy
By keeping their circles of zikr, by accompanying these guides whom Allah (AJ) has granted these lights and granted these realities, they begin to give us an energy. They begin to have an energy in their associations that are uplifting. Those uplifting energies begin to give us a himmah (zeal), a strength to do more. When we come into their presence, we’re being dressed from that light ’cause we’re thinking beyond the world of form. That their light is everywhere. Their light is moving, their light is not limited to their physicality. If that light is excessively positive, we’re dressed from that light, we take the residue of that light.
“Wa kono ma’as sadiqeen.” Allah (AJ) said, ‘Keep the company of the sadiqin (truthful) because they have an energy. They have My rida dressed upon them, they have the rida of Prophet ﷺ dressed upon them, they have the rida of ulul amr dressed upon them.’
9:119 – “Ya ayyuhal ladheena amanoo ittaqollaha wa kono ma’as sadiqeen.” (Surat At-Tawba)
“O you who have believed, have consciousness of Allah and be with those who are truthful/ Pious /sincere (in words and deed).” (The Repentance, 9:119)
Begin a Real Migration from Badness Towards Goodness
Means all of this is a summary of reaching towards that energy just so that we can begin to hear. So then they want the hearing. As soon as we begin to hear my consciousness, I begin to understand what’s right and wrong. Then in the night, when I’m taught on how to meditate, begin to contemplate. When this energy’s coming to you and you’ve agreed to leave the ocean of badness and migrate a real hijra (migration) towards goodness. Because everything is found in the salah (prayer), means every usool (principles), every pillar of Islam is in the salah. Every moment is a migration to Allah (AJ) but at what time are we really going to migrate from bad character to good character? At that time, when that energy is really in our heart that, ‘No I want to leave badness Ya Rabbi, I’m going to make my hijra to you.’
Tafakkur and Contemplation in Presence of the Righetous Ones
Then at night we begin the muhasabah (accounting) and the tafakkur (contemplation). That I’m going to sit and contemplate and see myself in the oceans of light. In the presence of Holy Ka’bah, in presence of Madinatul Munawwara (luminous city of Prophet ), in the presence of the saliheen (righteous). That who are these ibadullahis saliheen, that Ya Rabbi let me to keep their company. Let me to see and feel myself in their company.
“Attahiyatu Lillahi wa salawatu wat tayyibatu. Assalamu ‘alayka ayyuhan Nabiyu ﷺ, wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. Assalamu ‘alayna wa ‘alaa ‘Ibadulllahis saliheen…”
“All the best compliments and the prayers/praising and the pure/good things are for Allah. Peace and Blessings be upon you, O’ Prophet ﷺ! Peace be on us and on the righteous servants of Allah…”
Contemplate Nightly and Take an Account of Your Daily Actions
Then make my zikr, make my breathing, make my tafakkur and my contemplation and immediately begin to make my muhasabah. At that point everybody runs away. Then they say, no no, there’s no such thing as, as these practices- why? because nobody likes at night to take an accounting of themselves and find out what did they do wrong the whole day. Most will find everything was wrong, they drop and say, ‘There’s no need ya Rabbi, whatever it will be, will be.’ But those who truly want to purify, means every night they begin to meditate, contemplate, ‘What am I doing wrong ya Rabbi, give me strength. Give me a way out of this difficulty.’ They begin to cry, that ‘Ya Rabbi, take away these characteristics, take away these bad characteristics.’
Through that muhasabah, and real muhasabah is the reality of the tafakkur. That as you’re meditating and contemplating, you begin to take a hisab, take an account of ourselves. Then be going through that account that these are my characteristics, these are the bad characteristics that I have to attack. I have to go after my bad characteristics.
Stronger Connection Enable us to Hear Our Consciousness & Receive Information
As we’re able to do that, at the same time, Allah (AJ) begins to send a light. Now when Allah (AJ) sends a light, sent through the heart of Prophet . Prophet ﷺ gives a permission to those ulul amr that are known to us or unknown to us that increase the amount of light around them. As they increase the amount of light, the connection becomes stronger. They begin to teach that that energy that you are focusing on your ears, you begin to hear your consciousness. The one that you hid within yourself of all your actions, you begin to hear that consciousness, and the consciousness that’s always with Allah (AJ).
The majority of the soul, the reality of the soul is not given to us to destroy. It’s always with Allah (AJ). Like a satellite, it’s sending a guidance to the body. Means, it’s always in Allah’s (AJ) Presence and it’s sending a signal to the body. But as we become heedless we’re not picking up the signal like a satellite show and just going. But when we begin to meditate and contemplate and use these energies, use these gifts that Allah (AJ) has given to us, immediately as if like clouds begin to move away. And this connection begins to send its information, that you should be praying more, you should be doing that zikr more. You should be reading Dalail ul Khairat (book of praising on Prophet ﷺ) more, you should be making more of your tafakkur. Everything that Allah (AJ) wants for us of goodness is coming through that signal.
You’ll Be Taught the Difference Between Good & Bad Signals
Then they begin to teach how you know the bad signal and good signal. The good signal inspires you towards goodness and is heavy against the ego. The bad signal inspires towards badness and is not heavy on the ego. Means somebody says, ‘I got in my signal to say something to you.’ That’s a lie. That’s not in your signal, that’s from the ego. ‘It came in my signal to correct you on this. It came on my signal to, to take some cheese from the store.’ I said, I met some people that they thought that they were big struggle and their big struggle was to steal cheese wherever they saw it- this is a lie! [Shaykh laughs] Allah (AJ) doesn’t want you to steal cheese. Allah (AJ) doesn’t want you to do anything harmful ’cause you don’t yet know yourself. So you cannot be working for Allah (AJ).
Your Greatest Struggle is Going Against Yourself & Listening to Your Soul
What Allah (AJ) wants is, ‘Destroy that shaitan that’s around you. So that you really can worship Me, that you really can submit to Me and that you can really be and enter into the oceans of servanthood.’ So don’t listen to anything that directs you to something else. Only listen to what directs you against yourself. The greatest jihad (struggle) is the jihad against the self.
“An Jabiru qala, ‘qadema ‘ala Rasulullahi (saws) qawmun ghazatun, faqalan Nabiyu Sallallahu Alayhi was Salaam: ” Qademtum khaira maqdamin min jihadil Asghar ilal Jihadil Akbar.” Qeela “wa ma al Jihadil Akbar?” Qala “Mujahidatul ‘Abdi hawahu.”
Jabir (as) narrated: ‘Some warriors came to the Holy Prophet. He (Muhammad (s) said to them, “Welcome back, you came from minor Jihad/Struggle to the greater Struggle.”
It was asked, ‘what is the greater/big struggle Oh Prophet of Allah?” The Prophet (pbuh) replied: “it is the servant’s fight against his own Self/mundane wills/desires.” (Bayhaqi Kitab ul Zuhd-al-Kabir)
Then the shaykh trains you: don’t listen to anything that telling you to talk to this one, say this one, spread this one, but only listen to what is against yourself. Then your soul begins to tell you: pray two more rakah (cycle of prayer). You say, no, not right now. Pray ten more rakah; no not right now. Read a juz (part) of Qur’an; mmm I don’t have time for that right now. Read a section of Dalail ul Khairat; no I don’t really have time for that right now. Recite 200,000 Allah; mmm I can’t do it right now. Recite 24,000 salawat (praises) on Prophet ﷺ; no. Those that are heavy against the ego, that’s what they want us to listen. That is the inspiration of the soul. Everything that has to do with worshipness and to cleanse myself. As much as we can listen to that and begin to do those practices, as much as now the consciousness, the reality of the soul is giving its guidance, is giving its guidance, giving its guidance. At that time the shaykh is inspiring that reality to do this, to do that, based on the good practices.
If Your Ears Don’t Open, There’s No Way the Heart Will Open
As soon as that opens within the ears, they begin to focus with on the heart. Because they’re saying if your ears aren’t opening there’s no way the heart is opening. What is the heart going to open to? to shaitan who’s running everything? So they want to see, first level of “samina wa atana,” (we heard and we obey). That your ears are listening, listening to your reality. Before it even listens to ulul amr, before it listens to Prophet ﷺ, before it listens to Allah (AJ), that you have to listen towards your reality, leaving satanic desires and bad desires. If that doesn’t happen there is no way for somebody to claim their heart is open.
(Surat Al-Baqarah)
“…We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.” (The Cow, 2:285)
When the Ears Submit, the Guides Direct Their Nazar to Your Heart
Then they begin to train, with all that we said, is training on just the ears. Once the ears are submitting, they see that submission, they see that sincerity, then begins the process of the nazar (gaze) upon the heart. That Allah (AJ) begin to open the subtle energies of the heart: the Qalb (heart), the Sirr (secret), the Sirr e Sirr (secret of the secret), the Khafa (hidden), the Akhfa (most hidden). Means these lataif of the heart, these subtle energies of the heart, these are the satellites of the body. That as they begin to send this light upon that satellite, they know that you are in the struggle of a lifetime. That you are struggling against your ears, you’re trying to bring your ears into submission. As they see that, they focus with on the heart. As they focus their energy on the heart, again they’re focusing back to the head. So between the head and the heart is a constant process, constant process. That’s what they want from us that open your ears and truly submit your ears.
Faiz and Divinely Emanations Fill the Room Like Television & Radio Signals
Then they begin to send their light upon the heart. The different colours represent like a signal like a television signal that’s coming. That there must be a knowledge that begins to come like a faiz (downpouring emanation), like Allah (AJ) sending an emanation. SubhanAllah with technology, we know it as 100% true that nobody can deny it. There’s an energy right now in this room that picks up television signal. We can’t see it but you can’t say, ‘No there’s no energy, how Allah (AJ) going to send?’ You’re a liar! The room is filled with television signals; anyone puts a TV will pick it up. The room is filled with radio signals; if we put a radio we pick it up. Allah’s (AJ) Faiz not coming? It’s coming! Allah’s (AJ) Emanations are not sending, Prophet ﷺ is not sending by permission of Allah (AJ)? Sending!
1. Shaykh’s Light Hits the Station of Qalb and Begins to Send Knowledge
As soon as they give permission, these lights begin to come, they hit the lataif of the Qalb and they begin to send knowledges, that these are the realities of your soul, “‘Allamal Qur’an, Khalaqal Insaan.”
55:2-3 – “Allamal Qur’an (2). Khalaqal Insaan (3).” (Surat Ar Rahman)
”It is He Who has taught the Qur’an. (2) He has created Mankind. (3)” (The Beneficent, 55: 2-3)
As you are going back into that ocean of Allah’s (AJ) Teaching, this is what we want. When we’re submitting our ears, we’re saying, ‘I don’t want here, I want there. I want to go back into that reality.’ Allah (AJ) begins to teach. “Allamal Qur’an,” means go in these lataif of the heart. And the Qalb begins to come and they begin to emanate knowledges onto that lataif, so that we begin to understand a little bit more. If we read with that tafakkur, read holy Qur’an with that teaching of tafakkur and muhasabah. And you read an ayah (verse) and stop and ponder and think, ‘Ya Rabbi, with the Greatness of Your Great Oceans are, what is the rahmah (mercy) of Your Oceans?’ That knowledge that they’re dressing like a flower will bloom.
2. Station of Sir and Red Represents the Struggle & Our Need for Support
Then they begin to send the light from the qalb to the Sir which is a red, symbolizes struggle. When Allah (AJ) sees that we are struggling, He begins to give the isharat (sign) through the whole chain. Because you have to say Allah (AJ) or people will say, ‘Oh this, these people are talking about other people,’. Every command comes from the Lord Most High. That Allah (AJ) begins to authorize more light, symbolized by the colour of red for us to understand that this is a light of struggle. ‘Give My servant light to struggle against their desires.’ Means give them a madad, give them a support.
Support is Sent When You Struggle and Uphold the Sunnah of Prophet ﷺ
Allah’s (AJ) Support comes when He sees you’re really going to struggle. If you’re going to go out in your underwear and say, ‘I’m struggling for Allah (AJ),’ it’s impossible. Means that when we carry the sunnah, carry the beard, carry the hat, carry everything that we are showing ourselves constantly ready to struggle against the self. That’s why it’s so important to always be in a symbol of preparedness. Otherwise they say, ‘Okay we send these emanations but you don’t look like you’re ready. You don’t look like you’re prepared, nor does it look like you’re really going to be struggling against yourself. So now you’re wasting our time and their time.’ Means that again nothing ever opens.
For Allah (AJ) it’s 24 hours; it’s not a Sufi time and then disco time. Every time is Allah’s (AJ) Time. Every time is the way of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Every sunnah of Prophet ﷺ to the best of our ability we try to carry it and we try to keep it, it’s like an honourable flag. You don’t drop that flag just because we’re not at the zikr. That is a sign of somebody who’s sincere in their struggle. They keep their flag everywhere they go. That is a flag of their life that they are who they are here and they are who they are out on the street, they are who they are wherever you see them. They are who they are, and they are struggling against themselves. Then Allah (AJ) sends that light of struggle increase for them that light. So that that servant has now more energy, more himmah (zeal) to begin to struggle.
3. The White Colour at Sirr e Sirr Represents the Purity of Your Soul
If that light begins to open, then again Allah (AJ) begins- it’s all simultaneous. That the light of the ears give them more strength to go into their ears. Give them more strength now as he’s increasing his struggle, he wants to go now towards the sirr as sirr, which is a white, which symbolizes his reality in paradise. When he wears white like hajj (pilgrimage), means he’s going back to the purity of his soul, with no blemish. So symbolized again by white as Allah (AJ) says he wants to see the reality of his soul; begin to send him light upon his sirr as sirr.
Close Your Eyes and Meditate to See Your Paradise Reality
As that light is opening, they begin to go back to the head, and train you that you keep your eyes closed more. Because if you want to see your paradise reality, what you’re going to do with those physical eyes all the time busy with the material world? You choose: either you want to see physical or you want to see your spiritual. Then they begin to balance it: you look too much physical, too much you’re occupied with physical, no need to show that servant then the spiritual. They won’t know what to do with it, they’re already preoccupied with the material world.
So everything is a relationship between the head and the heart. When the servant is constantly sitting and closing their eyes and meditating and tafakkur. After every salah they sit for a few minutes, praying and listening to salawat, listening to Holy Qur’an. Allah (AJ) says, ‘Now begin to show khashf (spiritual state/vision), begin to show that paradise reality.’ Then they begin to teach you nazar bar qadam (gaze upon the path/feet). That watch your eyes; pay attention to your eyes, keep your eyes down. Keep your eyes off of these things, so that these visions can become stronger within the heart. That these realities we want to show can become stronger within the heart. And with this dunya that is a very difficult test because there are so much distractions in this world that are distracting the eyes. So then they begin to send more light onto the Sirr e Sir, more light onto the Sirr e Sir.
4. Khafa Reality Uplifts You with Knowledge, Vision and Truth of Certainty
Then again now for the Khafa realities of going towards annihilation, that the Khafa reality is to uplift the self with the knowledges, with the vision, Ilm ul Yaqeen (Knowledge of Certainty), Ayn ul Yaqeen (Vision of Certainty). Now they begin to teach the Haqq ul yaqeen, that what you are learning of realities, you are learning it with a reality, with a certainty.
“No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty.(5) Then you will surely see it with the eye/vision of certainty.(7)” (The Rivalry in World Increase, 102:5-7)
56:95 – “Inna hadha la huwa haq qul yaqeen.” (Surat Al-Waqi’ah)
“Indeed, this is the true certainty.” (The Inevitable, 56:95)
What you are seeing of realities is from what you are learning. So this becomes the vision of certainty. Then brick by brick, brick by brick, it is a haq of yaqeen, it is the truth of reality that you know it to be true because you heard it with reality, you’ve seen it with reality, and is a truthful reality for you. Not something your shaykh said and you wrote it down. But you have to be witnessing it, you have to be in that ocean, you have to be trained in that reality. Then it becomes a haq, Haqq ul yaqeen and a certainty of reality.
After Submitting Your Ears & Eyes, Submit Your Breath
Again through the relationship of the body that they want the ears then to submit, they want the eyes to submit. As the eyes are submitting, then they want the breath to submit. They begin to teach the importance of your energy is based on your breath. You have the ability to keep your breath for zikr e ‘Hu’. Then as you’re meditating and contemplating and tafakkur, you’re breathing bi zikr ‘Hu’ in, zikr ‘Hu’ out, zikr ‘Hu’ in, zikr ‘Hu’ out. And that begins to open the reality of that breath. That the power and the qudra that coming to you is from your conscious breathing.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
