How Does Hajj Relate to Spiritual Growth?
From the Realities of Mawlana (Q) as taught by Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi.
A’uzu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘aalameen, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Ashraful Mursaleen, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadul Mustafa ﷺ. Sahib Zaman Sayyidina Muhammad al-Mahdi (as), Ruhullah Sayyidina Isa (as), Sayfullah Sayyidina Ali (as), Thumma Sayyidina Abu Bakr as Siddiq (as), Sayyidina Umar (as), Sayyidina Uthman (as), Imam al-Hassan (as), Imam al-Hussain (as), Sayyidatina Fatima tul-zahra (as) wa ila sayiri wa sadatina wa Siddiqin. Al Fatiha.
Everything is in Obedience to Allah (AJ), But There’s a Deep Reality
“Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum,” and a reminder always for myself ana abdukal ‘ajeez, wa dayeef, wa miskin, wa zhalim, wa jahl and but for the grace of Allah (AJ) that we are still in existence.
4:59 – “…Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum…” (Surat An-Nisa)
“… Obey Allah, Obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you…” (The Women, 4:59)
We took a path in which to be nothing and from this holy month opening in the next few days, of Dhul Hajj, and the completion of one year’s hijrah (migration) in these ten days of immense blessings and ma’rifah (Gnosticism). That, from “Atiullaha wa atiur Rasula wa Ulil amre minkum,” is always a reminder that everything is in obedience to Allah (AJ). Some people want to simplify and say, ‘Only Allah (AJ) for everything.’ But there’s an understanding that when we say “Atiullah” is obedience to Allah (AJ), means Holy Qur’an.
Obedience to Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is Obedience to Allah (AJ)
Allah’s (AJ) then saying, “Atiur Rasul” which means it’s “Atiullah.” It’s the same obedience to Allah (AJ) but through the ihtiram (respect) of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. Allah (AJ) is pointing, ‘It’s the same.’ Allah’s (AJ) speaking. So He said, ‘First obedience is to Me.’ The supreme command always comes from Allah’s (AJ) Divinely Presence. Then clarifies it like a ladder coming to you, a rope coming to you that, ‘Obey the Rasul ﷺ – Atiur Rasul,’ and then that same command from Allah (AJ), “Wa Ulil amre minkum.”
Obedience to Ulul Amr (Saints) is Obedience to Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
So, means to obey Allah (AJ) is to obey Prophet ﷺ, and to obey Prophet ﷺ is to obey the “Ulil amre minkum” and all of that is obedience to Allah (AJ). The madhab of shaitan (satan) is to say, ‘No! Only Allah.’ So, then how would you obey Allah (AJ)? Are you at a station in which Wahy (Revelation) comes to you, directives and orders come to you? No! So, this path of humility, Allah (AJ) is teaching for us, ‘Hold tight to the rope and don’t tafarraq, don’t make into groups and sects. Hold tight onto this rope to reach towards this reality.’
(Surat Ali-Imran)
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not separate…” (Family of Imran, 3:103)
The Family of Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) Symbolizes the Essence of ‘Arafah
Then this symbol of Hajj and pilgrimage are the symbols and reality of our pilgrimage of faith. Every year we talk, at this time on this subject so we don’t want to go too deep. We can go through the articles, you can Google the articles (NurMuhammad.com). But what’s important in this reality, a reminder only for myself, that this “Atiullah” out of these three important souls and their example of the Hajj (pilgrimage) from Sayyidina Ibrahim (as), Sitna Hagar (as) and Sayyidina Ismail (as). These three personalities and souls – precious souls – on the reality of Hajj, and the reality and the essence of Hajj is ‘Arafah. And the reality of ‘Arafah is the qurban – the sacrifice. Like the bull’s eye of the bull’s eye of the bull’s eye. So all the Ahlus Sunnah ulama is that Hajj is ‘Arafah. You miss ‘Arafah you’ve blown your Hajj. It’s essence and secret, all those actions before were to take you to this reality of ‘Arafah, which was Islam, Iman (faith) wal Maqamul Ihsan (Station of Moral Excellence).
Three Stations of Obedience to Allah (AJ)
Represented by Three Precious Souls
That, Islam – the body, Sayyidina Ibrahim (as). Iman – Sitna Hagar (as). She represents in this example, this misal and they can flip it in any way that Allah (AJ) wants them for this understanding. The body of Islam represented in this example is Sayyidina Ibrahim (as). That, perfect to listen to Allah (AJ). Sitna Hagar (as) represents the beatific soul, that when the soul is in obedience, it’s following the order of the body. And when the body and the soul are in obedience this child will be born. It means that from:
-
- “Atiullah” is Sayyidina Ismail (as);
- “Atiur Rasul” is Sitna Hagar (as);
- “wa ulil amre minkum” in this example is represented by Sayyidina Ibrahim (as).
All of them are in obedience to Allah (AJ).
1. “Ulil Amre Minkum” – Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) Represents the Station of Islam
Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) represents that, all his life sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice so the body of his taslim (submission), the body of his Islam and his deen (religion), was to obey Allah (AJ). Obeyed in generosity, obeyed in ‘ibadah, obeyed in worshipness, obeyed in sabr (patience). For how many years he went through waiting for a son! That the body of the deen was based on being patient; submitting, submitting, submitting and as a result becoming this ulul amr (People of the Command).
2. “Atiur Rasul” – Sayyidina Hagar (as) Represents the Station of Iman
And with that beatific submission Sayyidina Hagar (as), his wife, represents the reality of his soul. His soul is not in conflict with his body and is not conflicted. This process of taslim, if you’re doing it right and listening to the guidance, they make your body to be into submission. And your soul has such a trust for your submission, it’s a taslim. It’s submitting and taslima – it’s been beautified. The beatific reality of the soul comes out by its confidence in the body.
You Haven’t Achieved ‘Arafah if Your Soul is in Conflict
When you’re in conflict in your meditation that, ‘How come I just can’t listen to these orders, I can’t listen to these commands, I can’t listen to these guidance, I can’t listen to what these talks are trying to teach me,’ you have conflict! And your conflict is your soul doesn’t trust your body, doesn’t trust the choices you’re making, and they are conflicted.
So, what Allah’s (AJ) saying, ‘All your Hajj, all your deen, all your practices, if it didn’t come to this pinnacle’ – because ‘Arafah is this little mountain it’s like a hill it’s not a mountain even – if all you did in life didn’t come to this point then when Allah (AJ) want to test you, you’re not in conflict. ‘I can’t do it, I’m not going to do it, I’m not going to do it, I’m not going to do it, I’m not going to do it,’ you’re wanting to walk away from it! But he kept going, ‘I’m going to sleep on it, I’m going to sleep on it,’ until finally Allah (AJ) third time said, ‘Get up! This is not your imagination. This order has come, do it.’
Spiritual Significance of the Three Jamarat
And the three shaitans standing there at the Jamarat (three stone pillars) is representing. Do you think shaitan is going to let your body to submit? So, whole time he’s telling you, ‘Allah (AJ) doesn’t want this from you. Leave it alone, go back to bed.’ Went back to bed, another warning came; third time is a charm, that’s it! You’re not going to get more than three warnings from Allah (AJ). ‘Get up, go!’ Then the beatific soul when it submits and accepts your body, accepts your deen, accepts your practices, it’s not gonna keep questioning you. When you question, ‘What, what, what, what?’ You’re showing you don’t trust the guidance. You’re panicking; what are you panicking about? There’s a deficiency in you, not the guidance!
Reality of the Soul Comes Out by It’s Confidence in the Body
That’s why then these stations are showing to us that when she completely trusted in his deen and his practices, she was in taslim (submission). So when the devil came, he said, ‘You don’t know what he’s planning on doing.’ And she’s, ‘A’uzu Billahi, he’s a Prophet (as) of Allah (AJ) and I am firm in my belief.’ It means, ‘I believe what the body has been commanded and you find me to believe with that.’ So the body and the soul are now following the command.
3. “Atiullah” – Sayyidina Ismail (as) Represents the Station of Maqamul Ihsan
Because this was the Ulul amr – he followed the command of Allah (AJ). “Wa Atiur Rasul” – because she followed the Rasul (as); she followed Allah (AJ) and what was the result? It was this beatific child of reality. And he was the only one who really followed Allah (AJ). That’s why he’s on this station. Sayyidina Ismail (as) achieved “Atiullah” because he told his father, ‘You find me to be patient with your killing of me.’ This is much different to sacrifice yourself than I come and say, ‘I’m going to sacrifice you. I may be a little bit sad but I’m sorry for you. You’re going.’ That’s not that bad, but the one comes says, ‘No! I’m sacrificing myself for Allah (AJ),’ is the one whom is obeying Allah (AJ).
37:102 – “Falamma balagha ma’ahus sa’ya qala ya bunayya inni ara fee almanami annee adhbahuka fanzhur ma dha tara, Qala ya abati if’al ma tu maru, satajidunee inshaAllahu minas Sabireen.” (Surat As-Saffat)
“And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, “O’ my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think. He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, one of the Patient/steadfast.’” (Those Who Set the Ranks, 37:102)
Reality of the Three Stations for Spiritual Growth
1. Islam – Show Good Character and Follow the Guidance
So, when your body is in taslim (submission) and you’ve listened to guidance, listened to the guidance, listened to the co-ordinance and it’s marching. It’s like army – left-right, left-right, left-right, left-right. You think redundant, you think whatever you want to think. There are people who e-mail, we give an answer, they e-mail again, ‘But…’ And we give and answer and they e-mail again, ‘But…,’ and they use capitals which is like shouting. You’re not getting it. It’s marching, just follow! Follow the guidance, follow the guidance, follow the guidance, not follow your head, your head’s going to take you off a cliff.
Salawatul Ibrahimiyah: Praise Upon Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) for His Station of Taslim
So, what Allah (AJ) said that, ‘All this Hajj, all your deen, all your religion is this understanding of ‘Arafah. Did you understand it yet?’ That, your Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) is your body and the beatific reality. Why we have Salawatul Ibrahimiyah? Why Prophet ﷺ wanted you to mention Sayyidina Ibrahim (as)? Because of the maqam (station) in which he occupies of cherubim and the maqam of this reality of taslim.
So that, when you praise upon Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) his nazar (gaze) comes to praise upon you – Ummat e Muhammad ﷺ (nation of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ). Allahumma ṣalli ʿala Sayyidina Muhammadin wa ʿala ali Sayyidina Muhammadin, Allahumma salli ala Sayyidina Ibrahim wa ala ali Sayyidina Ibrahima alaihis salam, immediately you got the nazar of Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) at this maqam of ‘Arafah. That, ‘I’ll dress you from what Allah (AJ) dressed upon me. Dress that, you’re taslim and that your body submit. Dress you from beatific stations.’
O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
He’s in charge of cherubim, means the beatific reality of these perfected souls. It’s a ni’mat (blessing) to the nation of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. That all the Prophets (as) of Allah (AJ) they want to give and bestow their gifts to this beloved nation.
2. Iman – Lessen the Inner Conflict and Your Soul Will Be at Peace
This most treasured nation of Allah (AJ), if they are submitting and they’re in taslim, the soul is following them. The soul is confident with your understanding and you find less and less inner conflict. It’s accepting that you are guided and that you’re listening and that you’re submitting. Your soul is at peace.
3. Maqamul Ihsan – When Your Soul Accepts Your Taslim a Beautiful Reality is Born
It means that shaitan is attacking your body, shaitan is attacking and whispering into your soul and then shaitan coming after the boy. But this reality that Allah (AJ) brings for us is that, ‘Your reality will be born.’ And that’s why awliyaullah (saints) say, ‘Oh this rijal (people of maturity) he’s, you know, not yet born. This one is still rijal, this one still rijal.’ Then they go said, ‘This wali (saint), he’s one year old, this wali is two years old, this one is five.’ It means they did not receive their amanat (trust). They can be rijal in training but they did not achieve this station of a birth and a re-birth in their reality. Their sainthood is in its infancy. Because why? Because this is the reality of Maqamul Ihsan.
It has to be born from your body and your soul submitting. Your body will be tested and your soul will be sort of inspecting your taslim. When it accepts your taslim, the soul becomes taslima and becomes beatific fragrance for you. Then that reality will be born. And that reality, we talked many years as a reminder, will begin to guide you. Because his body was scared, he was still scared to sacrifice. His Maqamul Ihsan came out and told him, ‘Baba! Don’t worry. You find me to be patient with what Allah (AJ) has ordered.’
Maqamul Ihsan: Gift from Allah (AJ), Guiding You Through Immense Testing
It means that your Maqamul Ihsan will guide you. That, as the test becomes harder and harder, and life becomes more and more stressful, more and more difficult, your Maqamul Ihsan is not just a gift that comes out, but it becomes your guide that comes out. And says that, ‘We are under Atiullah and we will bring you forward. Don’t worry here. You’re an Ulul amr and your soul was Atiur Rasul, but your Maqamul Ihsan is from obedience to Allah (AJ)’. It’s directly in Divinely Presence. When it comes out to guide you, it’s a guidance directly from Allah (AJ) pulling you that, ‘Don’t worry. You’re in Allah’s (AJ) command, move forward.’
Sayydina Ismail (as) Brought the Purified Muhammadan Light
So much high and so much power in that reality that Allah (AJ) made the whole nation to make tawwaf (circumambulation) around Sayyidina Ismail (as). The people who are against going to the qabr (grave), they don’t know who’s buried at the Ka’bah. Who’s buried at the Ka’bah? Sayyidina Ismail (as) in the niche. When you go to the Ka’bah and there’s like a little half circle. This is maqam (Holy Burial Site) of Sayyidina Ismail (as), to give him an ihtiram (respect), not a worshipness. But Allah (AJ) said, ‘What he accomplished and he brought the pure and purified Muhammadan light onto this Earth because this Muhammadan light’s so pure, it sacrifices itself! At the whisper of Allah (AJ) it will sacrifice itself.’ No hesitation, no shaking. It’s so pure in it’s taslim, it represents the reality that’s within the Ka’bah.
Atiullah, Atiur Rasul, Ulul Amr: Who Makes Tawwaf Around Whom?
He’s just a drop of the soul that’s really inside the Ka’bah that is so pure and purified that Allah (AJ) wants all of creation make tawwaf around that light. ‘And that one makes tawwaf around Me’ – because “Atiullah.” Then the tawwaf is “Atiur Rasul.” So, then Prophet ﷺ is making tawwaf around Allah (AJ). You’re not making tawwaf around Allah (AJ)! Prophet ﷺ is making tawwaf around Allah (AJ). Then Allah (AJ), ‘Follow the Ulul amr! Your tawwaf is on the outside.’ So, their tawwaf is moving, Allah (AJ) put the soul of Prophet ﷺ in the center. Why? To show that you are on that side; all of creation is making tawwaf around Prophet’s ﷺ light.
And Nurul Muhammadi ﷺ (light of Prophet ﷺ) is in the center making tawwaf around Allah (AJ) and that’s why the hadith Allah (AJ) describing, “Qalb al mu’min baitullah.”
Qala Rasulallahi ﷺ, Qala Allah (AJ): “Qalb al mu’min baytur rabb.” [Hadith al Qudsi]
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, that Allah (AJ) said:“The heart of the believer is the House of the Lord.” (Holy Hadith)
Because His mu’min’s (believer) soul is right there and Allah (AJ) is upon that reality and make everybody to make tawwaf around that reality.
Understanding the Reflective Reality
Allah (AJ) → Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ → Ulul Amr
Allah (AJ) is Seeing Over His Servants
It means this reality of this reflection is immense, is immense. That, when we even say that… what were we saying? That, to even look at me, “Wa ufawwidu amreee ilal laah; innallaaha baseerum bil’ibaad.” If we understood this point:
-
- From obedience to Allah (AJ) is obedience to Prophet ﷺ, means you’re obeying Allah (AJ).
- Obedience to the Ulul amr means you obeyed Prophet ﷺ, means you obeyed Allah (AJ).
“Wa ufawwidu amreee ilal laah; innallaaha baseerum bil’ibaad.” It means that when they look at you Allah’s (AJ) saying, ‘I have seen you; I see you through their eyes.’
40:44 – “…wa ufawwidu amreee ilal laah; innallaaha baseerum bil’ibaad” (Surat Al-Ghafir)
“….I entrust My affair I commit to Allah: for Allah is Seeing/watches over (His) Servants.” (The Forgiver, 40:44)
When these Ulul amr look at you, Allah’s (AJ) telling you in your heart, ‘I have seen you through their eyes. I see you through their eyes. I hear you through their ears. If I want, I’ll speak through his tongue to speak to you. If I want, I can embrace you through his hands.’ Allah’s (AJ) every faculty coming through. And this reflective reality, if it’s not understood they’re not understanding the nearness in which Allah (AJ) comes to His beloved creation.
2. Allah (AJ) Brings His Reality When We Follow Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ
And they hold Allah (AJ) as something very far away and almost imaginary for themselves, ‘Only Allah.’ How are you communicating with Allah (AJ)? How are you perfecting yourself with Allah (AJ)? How are you learning anything from Allah (AJ)? So, Allah (AJ) brings this reality to be close to us. So, that when you followed Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and when he looked at you, “Wa ufawwidu amreee ilal laah; innallaaha baseerum bil’ibaad (Holy Qur’an, 40:44).” His Sahabi (Holy companions of Prophet ﷺ) knew that, ‘When Prophet ﷺ looks at us, Allah’s (AJ) looking at us. Allah (AJ) has overtaken all his faculties and He looks through His servant. He hears through His servant. He interacts with His servant through that servant.’ All of that reality to reach to Sayyidina Ismail (as). It means he is Maqamul Ihsan!
Realities of Qurban (Sacrifice) in Our Spiritual Path
1. Submission – Come to Hajj by Submitting the Body
What is then the qurban? If we understood that Sayyidina Ismail (as) is Maqamul Ihsan on your life’s journey, is to reach to bring this child in your life out. ‘I have to submit my body and all my practices. I don’t know this Hajj, next Hajj, which Hajj Allah’s (AJ) going to open that this year I’m coming with my body submitting through extreme tests.’ You know screaming, yelling, kicking the whole way, and as a result of these extreme test, did my soul have more confidence in what I was doing? I don’t find too much inner conflict. All night long I’m not sort of like whispering to myself where both of us are talking. One saying, ‘You’re crazy,’ and the other one saying, ‘No you’re crazy.’ What they call schizophrenic, why? Because you have so many voices inside you because none of them trust each other. Right? Have you seen three people argue that don’t trust each other? He says, ‘What are you talking about?’ ‘No! What are you talking about?’
2. Trust – Have Complete Confidence in Your Elected Amir (Commander)
But when you elect an Amir (commander), you have to have a trust in the Amir! So, Prophet ﷺ, ‘The three of you, elect one.’ Same for my inner being. When they trust in me, my soul is accepting; accepting the submission of my body. Two of them are working for Maqamul Ihsan. Now this Maqamul Ihsan, Allah (AJ) says, ‘I’m going to give you the best gift that you can imagine which is a qurban.’ That qurban represents all the imperfections in your year of what you didn’t achieve to bring the reality of Sayyidina Ismail (as) out in you, Allah (AJ) will take it with the qurban.
3. Purification – Allah (AJ) Purifies Whole Year’s Imperfections Through Qurban
And that’s why Allah (AJ) describes the qurban as a tremendous ransom.
37:107 – “Wa fadainaahu bizibhin ‘azeem” (Surat As-Saffat)
“And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice” (Those Who Set the Ranks, 37:107)
qurban I will bring you closer to that reality.’ Instead of sacrificing you and saying, ‘No, you’re not capable of it,’ Allah (AJ) will dress you from the barakah (blessing) of that qurban, will take every sayyiati a’maluna (sins of our actions).
We said that all the sayyiat (sins), and all the bad actions, all the bad characteristics in this year of hijrah into Allah’s (AJ) presence; what your body didn’t achieve, what your soul didn’t believe and what you didn’t bring out of Maqamul Ihsan, Allah (AJ) brings it and purifies it with the qurban. So, means that qurban when they make the sacrifice of the qurban and when we initiate the qurban for Hajj, Allah (AJ) take all the bad actions and all the bad characteristic put it upon the creature to carry that burden and you become pure and purified for that year.
4. A Tremendous Ransom – the Nation of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is Elevated Through Qurban
So that, Allah (AJ) has stacked the game in our favor. Allah (AJ), because the nation of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is the nation that has to be the shiniest. When Allah (AJ) loves the nation because He loves Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ, says, ‘Your nation has to be the shiniest, the most beatific. When they sin, I count as one, when they do good, I count as ten. The game is stacked in your favor. Go wait all the way to the end of the year and anything you did wrong, I’ll cleanse it with the qurban.’ That’s why Allah’s (AJ) saying, ‘It’s a tremendous ransom.’ So, as soon as they go for ‘Arafah and they come down for Koh-e-Mina to go down to give their qurban. They used to come down from ‘Arafah right there, do the qurban and then put the marking that they had completed their qurban.
5. Khidmat (Service) – Qurban Reveals the Immense Blessing of Being of Service
And Allah (AJ) took all their sins and difficulty. That creature reached its maqam for what? The khidmat of Bani Adam (as) (children of Adam). It, on the day of promises accepted, ‘Ya Rabbi, for the sake of Your love for this creation of Bani Adam (as), I will give my life for them to achieve what they have to achieve.’ So, means Allah (AJ) has given so much ni’mat, so much bounty to the nation of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. But people in their minds begin to think, ‘This is not important, this not important, that’s not important.’ And before you know, shaitan has fooled them to leave all of these immense blessings and gifts. We pray that Allah (AJ) dress us, bless us, and to keep the way of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.
Subhana rabbika rabbal ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon, wa salaamun ‘alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi rabbil ‘aalameen. Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
