Du’a for Understanding Huroof u’l Muqatta’at

اَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم   

A’udhu Billahi Min’ash Shaitanir Rajeem
Bismillahi’r Rahmani’r Raheem

وَلَا حَوْلَه وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَا بِاللهِ الْعَلِيِ الْعَظِيْمِ
لَا اِلَهَ اِلَا اللهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ الْمُبِين
مُحَمَّدُ رَّسُولُ اللهِ صَّادِقِ الْوَعْدِ الْأَمِين

Wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa Billahil ‘Aliyyil ‘Azeem
Laa Ilaaha IllAllahul Malikul Haqqul Mubeen
Muhammadur Rasulullahis Saadaqil Wa’dil Ameen

رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا بِمَا أَنزَلَتْ وَاتَّبَعْنَا الرَّسُولَ فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ(3:53)
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِ وَسَلِّمْ وَأبِرَّ وَأَكْرِمْ وَأَعِزَّ وَعَظِمْ وَالرْحَمْ
عَلَي الْعِزِّ الشَّامِخِ وَالْمَجْدِ الْبَاذِخِ
وَالنُّورِ الطَّامِحِ وَالْحَقِ الْوَاضِحِ  

Rabbana aamanna bima anzalta wattabanar Rasula, Fa’ktubnaa ma’ash shaahideen
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim Wa birra wa akrim wa a’izza wa a’zim warham
‘Alal ‘izzish shaamikhi wal majdil baadhikhi
Wan noorit taamihi wal haqqil waadihi

مِيْمِ الْمَمْلَكَةِ، وَحَآءِالرَّحْمَةِ
وَ مِيْمِ الْعِلْمِ وَدَالِ دَالَالَةِ

Meemil mamlakati wa Haa ir Rahmati
Wa Meemil ilmi, wa Daalid Dalalati

وَأَلِفِ الْجَبَرُوْتِ وَحَاءِ الرَّحَمُوْتِ
وَمِيْمِ الْمَلَكُوْتِ، وَدَالِ الْهِدَايَةِ

Wa Alifil jabaruti, wa Haair Rahmuti
Wa Meemil malakuti wa Daalil hidayati

وَلَامِ الْأَ لْطَافِ الْخَفِيَّةِ
وَرَاءِ الرَّعْفَةِ الْخَفِيَّةِ
وَنُوْنِ الْمِنَنِ الْوَفِيَّةِ
وَعَيْنِ الْعِنَايَةِ، وَكَافِ الْكِفَايَةِ
وَيَاءِ السِّيَادَةِ، وَسِيْنِ السَّعَادَةِ، وَقَافِ الْقُرْبِة
وَطَاءِ سَّلْطَنَةِ، وَهَاءِ الْعُرْوَةِ، وَصَادِ الْعِصْمَةِ

Wa Laam il altaafil khafiyyati
Wa Raa ir Ra’fatil khafiyyati
Wa Noon il minanil wafiyati
Wa ‘Ain il ‘inayati, wa Kaaf il kifaayati
Wa Yaa is siyaadati, wa Seen is sa’adati, wa Qaafil qurbi
Wa Taa is saltanati, wa Haail ‘urwati, wa Saadil ‘ismati

وَعَلَي آَلِهِ جَوَاهِرِ عِلْمِهِ الْعَزِيْزِ
وَأَصْحَابِهِ مَنْ اَصْبَحَ الدِّيْنُ بِهِمْ فِيْ حِرْزٍ حَرِيزْ

Wa ‘alaa aalihi jawahiri ‘ilmihil ‘azizi
Wa ashaabihi man asbahaddeenu bihim fee hirzin hareez.

I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

And there is no power, and nor strength except with Allah, The Most High, The Magnificent.

None is worthy of worship except Allah, The Sovereign Lord, The Clear Truth.

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, truthful to his promise, trustworthy.

Our Lord! We believe in what You have Revealed and we follow the Messenger, so write us down among those who bear witness (3:53).

O Allah! Bestow blessings, peace and honour; and give nobility, power and greatness; and have mercy on the one who is lofty in power and towering in grandeur, and is the high-aspiring light and the clear truth;

(in the name Muhammad)
the letter “Meem” is for the kingdom,

“Haa” is for mercy,
“Meem” is for knowledge,
and “Daal” is for evidence (proof);

(in the name Ahmad)
the letter “Alif” is for might and power,

“Haa” is for the realm of mercy,

“Meem” is for sovereignty, and
“Daal” is for guidance;

(in the Huroof u’l Muqatta’at)

the letter “Laam” is for hidden kindness,

“Raa” is for hidden compassion,

“Noon” is for perfect benevolence,

“‘Ain” is for care and concern,

“Kaaf” is for sufficiency,

“Yaa” is for headship and becoming master,

“Seen” is for happiness,

“Qaaf” is for nearness,

“Taa” is for the sultanate,

“Haa” is for the tie or bond (of friendship)

and “Saad” is for preservation,

and (blessings and peace) on his family, who are the high ones of his esteemed knowledge, and on his companions through whom religion was well protected.

This is just the opening portion of this momentous salaat which is only about a quarter of it. The remaining three quarters consists mostly of dua (invocation).

This calls for a Fateha. Al-Fateha!
